In my first year as president of our association I have put three tasks at

the top of my priority list which include strengthening the committee structure and collaborative efforts of our board of directors, increasing the strength of our association through increased membership and lastly, development of the first annual IHSWCA classed team state duals event to be held next season.

I couldn’t be more proud of our officers and regional representatives from across the state. In addition to overseeing their own high school teams, they have unselfishly given their time and expertise in handling association business thus far this season. Each regional representative and officer sits on at least one of our many standing committees which meet outside of our regularly scheduled monthly meetings. I want to thank all of those coaches for their commitment to our cause and their service to our membership.

Strengthening our association membership seems to always be a challenging task from year to year. It is our goal to grow our member base to 400 coaches this year. The regional representatives have been working hard to contact every school in Indiana that has a high school wrestling program. We feel like it would not be too much to ask for each of these wrestling schools

to have at least one IHSWCA registered member on staff. We will continue our efforts toward this objective as the influence of our association hinges on the diversity and growth of our membership.

Lastly, the steering committee continues to put the finishing touches on our plan for the first IHSWCA classed team state duals tournament. Coaches will soon be able to see a list of

all the wrestling high schools in Indiana organized by their enrollment. Before invitations are extended for next season’s inaugural event, any coach/team wanting to bump up to a larger class will have to declare so by February 4. After this

date, the selection committee, using an established, mathematical formula will invite seven teams in each of the three classes to participate in next season’s event. There will be one “wildcard” invitation made in each of the three classes approximately one month prior to the actual event. There have been many, many hours of work put in by the officers, representatives and selection committee in planning for this event. We think this tournament will offer an exciting experience for both the teams involved and the fans in attendance.

A message from Purdue University’s Tom Erikson:

As many of you may already Purdue University is going to be hosting the Big Ten Wrestling Championships in Mackey arena on March 3rd and 4th 2012. We are excited to be hosting this event for several reason, the main being able to host such a prestigious event in our own gym is an honor we do not take lightly. !e other is that we will be welcoming Nebraska into the world of Big Ten Wrestling something I am not sure they understand.

For those wrestling enthusiasts around the state who will not get a chance to get to St. Louis for the NCAA Championships might think about making it to the Big Ten Championships as you will be able to see some of the best college wrestling you will see outside of the NCAA Tournament. We look forward to welcoming you to our home and look forward to seeing you March 3rd and 4th.

COVER STORY

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Changes to Academic All-StateIHSWCA member may nominate any wrestler, based on the listed criteria on the

IHSWCA Academic All-State form. For Junior of Senior Academic All-State Criteria for Nomination: 1. Must be a junior/senior. 2. Must have a 3.25 average for 7 semesters. This is on a 4.0 scale. Please convert to

a 4.0 scale when nominating. *3. Must wrestle in sectionals at some point during your high school career. 4. Must be nominated by a member of the IHSWCA. EXPLANATION OF CHANGE – In an effort to allow our kids that live in

academia more chances achieve their academic goals through wrestling we opened academic all-state up to all those that participate in sectionals. In the past a wrestler had to be a regional qualifier. The IHSWCA looked at football, soccer, and swimming, and in all cases you had to be on the sectional roster but not participate in the actual game. In one case we had a coach state, “The salutatorian was on our team, but took 5th at sectionals, he was the salutatorian of over 500 kids in his senior class, has a full academic scholarship and didn’t get to be honored through wrestling for his academic achievements.” While not passed by a 100% vote, it was voted on and was passed by a large majority vote. Those that voted for this change thought it was a positive step in trying to attract more kids from the academic world to step foot on the wrestling mat. For those kids borderline on grades to step it up a notch and obtain that 3.25 or better, and for local communities to have a few more academic all-states to be proud of. Our academic all-state requirements are becoming more closely aligned with other sports in Indiana.

State champion and Academic All-State member Drake Stein.

Why do you have to wear the mask, explain in detail?

I’ve worn the mask ever since breaking my nose Sophomore year. I’ve continued to wear it to protect my face. I think it helps me because I don’t have to worry about getting hit in the face or poked in the eye while wrestling

How does being a team state champ compare to being an individual state champ?

It felt great winning both, but being able to help Coach Tonte and Coach Schoettle achieve their goal as becoming team state champions felt awesome. I was able to share the win with them as

well as my team mates.

Does your coach push you to do extra workouts and what kind of training, nutrition schedule do you follow ?

The coaches push me beyond my limits at times. With out them I can honestly say I wouldn’t be the wrestler i am today As for training and nutrition I have a passion and desire to lift weights. Nothing feels better than working your body to exhaustion and the progression you get from it. Nutrition is also a big factor in how I train. Im always taking vitamins and eating healthy which allows me to train to my full potential.

What does PM wrestling do different to be successful from other programs and where does the success start at ?

PM coaches and wrestlers are dedicated plain and simple. To be the best you have to be committed. We show up to everything not only in season but the off season as well.

Jared won pre season nationals in Iowa and was also outstanding wrestler there.

He also has won County and Conference so far this season. His record so far this season is 25-0. He plans on going to college and wrestling but is still undecided where he wants to attend.

Last year he was State Champ with a record of 54-1

YOUTH WRESTLING – ISWA SEASON PREVIEW

The 2012 ISWA’s Folkstyle season has started with a lot of momentum.

Clubs have been hosting elementary duals all through December leading up to what has become a very exciting event. Teams came from all over the state to compete in the 2nd Annual ISWA Elementary State Duals. This tournament saw a 60% growth in teams from last year and we expect even more clubs will be participating next year.

The competition was very tight, where many duals were decided with the last

match. Columbus East took home the State Championship in what was a very exciting day for athletes, coaches and fans. Special thanks to ISWA’s Matt Brewer, Chris Lynch and Pat Van Horn and all the volunteers who work tirelessly to make this event a success.

The ISWA continues to move forward offering many Folkstyle tournaments every weekend throughout the state leading up to the ISWA Folkstyle State Championships. March 9 – 11, 2012 at Ben Davis High School for Pee Wee,

Bantam, Intermediate and Novice age divisions and March 16 – 18, 2012 at Warren Central High School for Schoolboy/Girl, Cadet and Junior divisions. Women’s State Folkstyle Championships will be held Sunday March 11, 2012 at Ben Davis High School.

The ISWA is closely working with the IHSWCA in putting on their Middle School State Championship.

YOUTH WRESTLING CONTINUED – HYWA SEASON PREVIEW

Hoosier Youth Wrestling Association for

Youth is growing and gaining popularity across Indiana and the country. Indiana’s association (HYWAY) joins efforts with several other states under the name NUWAY (National United Wrestling Association For Youth) to provide affordable folkstyle opportunities in both individual and dual meet competitions. HYWAY provides local open tournaments, friendship duals, dual meet tournaments, wrestling camps, HYWAY State Championships, and NUWAY Nationals. This spring we are planning a dual team state finals. This has proven plenty of quality competition for the current participants in the HYWAY organization. HYWAY member can compete in any of the member states and National events with their HYWAY/NUWAY membership

card. HYWAY membership is managed on a cutting edge database where new members can purchase and print membership card and register for events from the database.

Reinvestment in wrestling is the founding principles of the HYWAY/NUWAY organization. Supporting wrestlers, clubs, and college programs financially is the goal of the organization. Investments in technology for wrestling are a top priority with HYWAY in order to make tournament management simple and timely.

Just recently the pairing technology has been made available in real time and via wifi and the internet.

HYWAY comes together with several other states to offer some very impressive national events in for Elementary through High School wrestlers pretty much year round.

your wrestlers to get their application in as soon as they can. They do not want to miss this tournament. ISWA will be providing transportation, rooms, team equipment and some of the best

coaches in the state. Contact Team Leaders Chris Lynch ([email protected] ) or Alonzo Shepherd ([email protected]).

The ISWA invites all those coaches that are interested in joining our national coaching staff which includes

many of our best coaches and college coaches, to submit their applications. Contact Danny Struck – State Coaches Director for more information and opportunities. Application can be found

When I came to South Adams, I was very lucky in that several of the pieces that make a great program were already in place. We had a solid club program, and 2 very good middle school coaches (Jeff Sprunger and Corey Sparks). We just needed to get every level of the program on the same page regarding, technique, practice format, and practice intensity.

As far as coaching, our middle school coaches help with our high school practices up until middle school wrestling begins (2 months). Once the high school season finishes up, the high school coaches help with the middle school practices. All of these coaches at the same time are helping with the club program. I think this is a tremendous benefit to the program as a whole. It

is tough to find guys that are that dedicated, and we are lucky enough to have them. Having the same coaches helping at all levels has really helped to solidify the program from top to bottom.

Staying on top is a tough task. We have been working hard with all levels of our program. One thing that I think is vital for us is that, I am more than happy to take any first time wrestlers at the middle school level. We have several varsity contributors that did not wrestle a match until middle school. Also, we try to not let kids fall through the cracks. It is impossible to retain every kid in your program, every year, but I have found that encouraging kids to continue wrestling even though they were 0-15 or 2-12 in middle school can also pay dividends. We have a varsity kid in our lineup now that won a total of 10 matches in 3 years of middle school. He currently has 20 wins this year, and is a sophomore. Kids Grow Up!

Next season the IHSWCA is starting a classed team state event. If South Adams were invited what effect would this have on your program? How do you think the community of South Adams would react if you were able to take home a title?

I have had kids talking about it all season long. In a way I feel bad for our outgoing seniors, as they would have done anything for an opportunity like this. When I explained the possibility of the IHSWCA classed team state, to our team, they immediately started filling weight classes in their minds, looking at incoming freshmen and retuning wrestlers, and asking me how good I thought our chances would be of getting invited. I think there is a possibility of our numbers increasing, with kids knowing that they may have a chance to contribute to a team, with a chance of going to state.

As far as the impact on the community; The IHSWCA took an awesome step in introducing the classed team rankings. The South Adams/Berne community knew that we had a good team and program, because we were winning conference titles, but they really didn’t have insight into how we stacked up to schools in the rest of our state. They were astonished to see us ranked #1 and #2 last year in the small school division. It started to legitimatize our program and also gave them something to compare it to in terms of Football, Basketball, and Baseball. I believe that if we are invited to the event next year, our community would really be abuzz about the event.

Coaching at a small school brings a unique set of challenges. What are some of the difficulties you have had in trying to put together a team that competes every year at such a high level at a small school?

The main challenge is always going to be numbers. If you are coaching at a

small school, you really need to decide at one point, once you get your program rolling, what it is that you want. You can have very good numbers at a small school, but as they experience the grind of very difficult practices, and a brutal season, there are going to be individuals that quit. We decided that we would rather push our kids a little bit harder, and sacrifice the numbers that we may be able to have, if we didn’t push as hard i.e. quality over quantity.

With this unique set of challenges, I have to assume that coaching at a small school has some advantages as well….explain some.

We get to know the kids better on a personal level. We see the same sets of kids yearly, therefore we get to know them. It’s also fun to play the David vs Goliath card to get them fired up for big matches against big schools.

Do you run a youth program? What are the ways that you are working to grow your program at the elementary and middle school levels?

We have the Gold Wrestling Club at South Adams. Ron Dull organizes our club and does an awesome job. Some of the Adams County, Wells County and Jay County Clubs have formed a wrestling league, where the clubs wrestle duals against each other throughout the season. This has helped to increase the level of interest in wrestling at the youth level, and also increase the numbers. Also, at South Adams our high school wrestlers run a week long camp for the elementary wrestlers. The kids are divided into teams, with 2 high school wrestlers being their head coaches, and they wrestle duals against each other. It’s very enjoyable for both the elementary and the high school kids.

If you were going to give any advice

to coaches who are just starting out what would it be?

My number 1 piece of advice would be to surround yourself with great people. I have been lucky enough to have those people in our program. I have watched several coaches, try to do it all, and they end up spreading themselves too thin. I like to be a part of all aspects of our program, but at the same time, one person cannot do it all, you need help. I also like to bring back kids with solid character, which have wrestled for me, to help coach with me. They understand what I am trying to accomplish, because they have been through it, and they can also provide a youthful outlook towards wrestling.

Why are you a member of the IHSWCA?

I am a member because, I want to be able to nominate wrestlers for academic honors, as well as having a voice in our coach’s association as we progress forward and try to improve our sport.

Getting “strong” at JeffersonvilleSTRENGTH & CONDITIONING

Coach Struck is a Gold Level USA Wrestling Coach, a certified Bigger,

Faster, Stronger coach. He holds a Sports Performance Certification with USA Weight lifting, coaches football and wrestling, and teaches a Sports Performance Class at Jeffersonville High School. Jeffersonville was featured last month in Bigger, Faster, Stronger focusing on what they do to help all sports at their school. We are going to take a look at the program they use.

INTRODUCTION TO OUR WEIGHT PROGRAM

I am not an expert by any means, but I feel we do a good job of physically preparing our kids for their wrestling meets, and other sports that they participate in. It is very important to the success of Jeff Wrestling that we have multi-sport athletes. It helps us recruit more athletes from other sports and it keeps other coaches happy do to the fact that our athletes aren’t stream lined to one sport. One of the reasons we are able to keep so many kids out for wrestling is because they know they will get plenty of weight lifting for their other sports in addition to the typical tumbling drills, speed work (footwork) drills and medicine balls exercises. We do those before we lift year round, and we stretch after practice year round. I am going to describe to you what we do in the weight room. I will discuss the tumbling, speed-work, and medicine balls in a future article.

I have never agreed with the idea that athletes cannot build strength in season. I am not sure who originally said that, but this is false. Our kids build all kinds of strength. The experienced

weight lifter might not build as much strength in wrestling season but they will still see gains. More importantly, the kids that aren’t as experienced in weight lifting make huge gains during the season. Furthermore, if you have a kid that plays football, wrestles and runs track, and each coach takes the philosophy that we can’t build strength

during season, then your kids NEVER lift to get stronger, they just lift to maintain and maintain what? Every time we lift, we lift to get stronger. Stronger people have fewer injuries. We start them lifting in 6th grade. We split them into advanced and beginner lifters, but

we start them all on an 8 week program. Is that too early? NO! Lifting doesn’t stunt growth or create injuries. Lifting WRONG does. But so does wrestling wrong, tackling with your head down, or doing any other athletic activity wrong. That is why you MUST have a

routine, not random exercises. I like cross fit and the other programs that keep kids constantly doing something new, but as a coach of a team where 70+ kids might be lifting at once, I like to make sure I show them the exercises, and they go through my tutorial, that way I know they will always do them right. Otherwise I’m showing them new things all the time and they are more likely to forget proper form. You can do these lessons in small groups and individual situations.

Now let’s get onto the actual program.

PROGRAM BASICSIn my 14 years of coaching I have

tried many different programs, and I have found I like the BFS set/rep schemes for the core lifts. BFS consists of 4 core lifts, but I prefer to add a 5th – snatches. Snatches create a ton of balance, and they are a true measure of how hard you can explode your hips to get the weight to the ceiling. I went and spent a day with one of the greatest strength coaches I have ever known, Marty Mills of Center Grove. I liked

Page 13: IHSWCA Unite #2

13

his style so I “borrowed” much of it. He is the person whom most of my ideas have stemmed from. I run a class and use many of his philosophies. I am getting GREAT responses from tennis, basketball, and football players on their improvements.

HOW OFTEN?We lift as much as possible, I have 4

years to get a high school kid strong, and 7 years to get a 6th grader strong. So we lift 2-4 times a week, year round. We don’t back off, until that individual needs to ABSOLUTELY peak. We don’t attempt to peak for every Saturday tourney. If we feel the kid can get to semi-state we try to time his peak to push him to semi-state, if we feel he can go to state, we peak him at state. We try and keep a constant lifting routine year round, no matter what sport they are in, or what competition is coming up. Our kids are involved in too much to con-stantly say we need to peak at all times. If a student has 10 football games, 10 wrestling meets, off-season wrestling meets, and pitchs for the baseball team, we still expect him to lift hard, year round, no matter what. But we cannot expect him to peak at all times.

Is what you are reading perfect? NO!!! But it is working for us, and from the strength and speed gains my kids are making we will not be changing drastically anytime soon. This is what works for us, but other teams have different facilities, so they must adjust.

NO MATTER where I coach, I would use the same philosophy of ONLY doing multi joint exercises. There are too many things you can do to waste time and not get athletically stronger. Only doing things in a Push, Squat, Pull, Clean and Press fashion keep us on task and ready for the next part of practice, or out of the weight room and on with your day.

Ultimately, we are making ATHLETES not bodybuilders. Lift like an athlete.

OUR TYPICAL LOOKING ROUTINE If we are in the summer we put a

third Explosive lift, and take out one circuit. If we are close to state finals we take out one explosive lift and add one circuit.

We try not to make weight lifting all about conditioning. We do neck and abs and all the other things that you don’t need weights for at practice. We want it to simulate matches and do things that you CAN’T do in conditioning.

HOW LONG DO YOU LIFT AT PRACTICE?

Weights never last more than 30

minutes in that regard (the rest of weights are either foot speed drills (ropes, foot ladders, dots, box jumps), medicine ball drills, or tumbling drills). People that lift for 2 hours are not working out for the whole two hours.

Foot speed and tumbling drills are more important to me than lifting. They will be discussed in another article.

HOW MANY DAYS A WEEK?We lift 2-4 days a week, but never less

than 2, and rarely 4 days. We allow our JV wrestlers to lift a 4th time a week after sectionals as they don’t get to wrestle, and love lifting. After we do 2

SELECTING YOUR LIFTS:We do our first lift for 6 minutes

each. If we do 2 explosive lifts they take 12 minutes, 3 lifts – 18 minutes

If we do 1 explosive lift – we do 3 circuits (late season-january-regionals)

2 explosive lifts 2 circuits (mid season and off-season)

3 explosive lifts 1 circuit (early season, and right before semi-state and state- I want kids to stay explosive).

We do the explosive lifts in order, we do 2 explosive lifts each day.

Monday we do Bench and Squat, Wednesday Cleans and Deadlifts, and on Friday we do Snatch, and start over with Deadlift.

Having 5 explosive lifts and always doing 2 or 3 of them in a day keeps you rotating which ones you are doing together.

Circuits are 5 minutes in length – goal is 10 reps on each in a super set – get 5 rounds done

But – YOU HAVE TO HAVE A PUSH SQUAT, PULL, CLEAN, PRESS AND SWING in your workout – so a 2 week routine looks like this.

days a week for 51 weeks (moratorium), we will have 102 lifting sessions in. I guarantee that is more than most schools do. Think of the number of times a football coach had a kid lift 4-5 days a week in the summer, then 1 day a week during football season, then gave them off until January. If you stick with 2 days a week I guarantee you will see more lifting sessions than any other sport, and you won’t burn yourself or your team out.

CLOSINGLots of people chose “body building

routines” for their teams, and that is fine. I would much rather have our kids lifting than not lifting. Heck, I have even told other sports that as long as they are lifting, they can do what they want to do. But for me, and our team, when we have that precious 30 minutes of lifting together, we make sure we are working to become to better ATHLETES. We don’t do curls, and don’t do pec deck machines. We do things that will enhance our athletic performance, things that are explosive, things that involve your hips, things that require a “triple extension” of your ankles, knees and hips, and things that are multi-joint exercises. Our kids get stronger. They get stronger year round for four years. Kids that chose to get bigger do get bigger. They eat to get bigger or smaller, and we lift to get stronger.

This is working for us, feel free to adapt it to your weight room and your program needs.

This is instructional time and our A group is supposed to help teach the B group. You can also use this rotation for drilling with less time and no instruction. We like it because it narrows the room down. As a coach, you have your group in front of you and not spread out across the room.

In the wrestling room with Ben Davis

It’s a normal wrestling practice at Madison Consolidated High School

with wrestlers pushing their bodies to limits. Head Coach Tyson Skinner and his staff are barking out orders demanding the kids push themselves to their limits. Then as the wrestlers break for water you can see a young man wander over to a bench and pull something from his bag and press the object to his body, then grabs another object and repeats, then you can see him sit and wait on something as if he is waiting to be called to the mat. Wait what is this?! The Young man pulls out a box and begins snacking on candy? This is Blasphemy in the matroom!? Or

is it.The above scenario is what freshman

138lber Hunter Sego must be vigilant about and closely monitor in such an intense workout environment as wrestling. Hunter has been battling against type 1 diabetes since he was diagnosed back in 2004 at the age of eight. He wears an insulin pump daily to help regulate his sugar level but on a regular occurrence with wrestling practice and no pump on his levels can get low and must quickly take action to prevent serious injury and constantly check his sugar levels.

Hunter’s story is not just that of a boy wanting to be normal and just like

everyone else but it is a story of a family that accepted the challenge and wanted to pave the way for future student athletes who might fall into the same daily grind.

It all started when Hunter was forced with a decision to possibly move to another school due to lack of a full time nurse to help manage his needs. His parents, Kathy and Byron Sego, turned to the American Diabetes Association for help and before long they help put a plan in motion that would help to put a bill into motion with the Indiana Genreral Assembly, House Bill 1116, the Diabetes School Care Act.

This Bill would allow children with

diabetes to be Safe at School. Hunter told the legislature, “With the passage of this bill, anyone who is trained can help me. I don’t want other kids to go through what I went through. We are just like everyone else.” Hunter was effective in his lobbying efforts and the Act was signed into Law in May of 2007.

“Hunters Law” as it has become known has helped students all across the state to enjoy a school environment free from discrimination due to their infliction. Now this law has served

as the model for ever state across the nation, as students are now allowed to test anywhere on school grounds and for all teachers and coaches to be trained in diabetes care.

On top of being a 3 sport athlete (football, wrestling, and track) Hunter also is a straight “A” student who also serves on the American Diabetes Association Leadership Board and the Youth Advocate.

With the downside to diabetes Hunter has also found some positives as he has

been a part of numerous ADA events as a speaker and meet a various who’s who of entertainment and political figures, ranging from Joe Lieberman, Evan Bayh and Nancy Pelosi to Melissa Ethridge, John Saunders, and Adam Morrison.

But after all is said and done Hunter Sego just wants to be a normal kid that can experience the same day to day activities as anyone else. Win or lose whether it is on the field, mat or track, Hunter has already become a champion to so many future student athletes.
