With an extensive global procurement and logistics network, MAP International is unrivaled in its ability to get hundreds of millions of dollars worth of vital medicines

and critical supplies into the hands of health professionals serving people in the worlds poorest communities each year. Byincreasing access to these resources, MAP

prevents illness, treats disease, and improves the health of children and their famil ies.

    STRENGTHENING THE HEALTH

SYSTEM OF LIBERIACOUNTRY OVERVIEWIt is fitting that MAPs commemorative shipment for reaching $4 billion has gone to Liberia - for over 40 years, MAP

International has maintained a long-standing commitment to meeting the health needs of the Liberian people. Many years of

brutal and bloody civil war has taken its toll in Liberia. More than 250,000 people died during the conflicts and many thousands

more fled from their home villages. Although fighting stopped in 2005, very little has been done to restore roads or electricity,

and the health system was severely weakened. Throughout the country, most people continue to live in abject poverty with

    their homes and livelihoods destroyed.

PROJECT SUMMARYMalaria, meningitis, acute malnutrition, diarrhea and acute

respiratory infections, among many other diseases, comprise an

enormous challenge to sustainable health care. To strengthen

the health system in Liberia, MAP has distributed $85 million in

critical drugs and medical supplies since 2000. Our local

partners support over 50 health facilities and programs at every

level in the health care system mission clinics and hospitals,

Ministry of Health clinics & hospitals, community health centers,

    mobile clinics, and specialized clinics.

    PROJECT FACTS:

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT INCREASING ACCESS TO HEALTH CAREPrimary care clinics and mobile health outreach are effective strategies in promoting health and preventing disease in health

care systems around the world especially for rural communities with limited or no access to health facilities. One in-country

partner in Liberia utilizes both strategies to deliver health care to those in need. Drugs and medical supplies from MAP are a

key contributor to the effectiveness of the Wonjah Smith Clinic in the capital city of Monrovia - which reaches thousands in this

urban center and also serves as a base to launch health outreach into the interior, rural villages. With this partnership, MAP

medical resources are increasing access to health care for some of the poorest communities in Liberia.
