August 2012 IHMs Gather for Annual Assembly and Jubilee Celebration Two hundred forty-four sisters gathered July 27 and 28 for the annual IHM Assembly. Following the opening prayer, Sister Therese O’Rourke, president, addressed the assembly. A discussion about the present doctrinal assess- ment followed. The afternoon agenda included a compre- hensive midterm report from the IHM Leadership Team. Several items carried over from the Mission Board were discussed and voted on prior to the conclusion of the meet- ing. A picnic supper was held in thanksgiving for Sister Ruth Harkins and her ten years as director of vocations for the congregation. Later in the evening many sisters at- tended the St. Joseph’s Center Festival on the grounds of Marywood University. Saturday’s presentation and process were facilitated by Sister Chris Partisano, CSJ. A three-part video interview of Sister Sandra Schneiders, IHM, (Monroe) conducted by Sister Annmarie Sanders, was presented. In part one Sister Sandra addressed, “Letting the Past Guide our Movement into the Future.” Following the video segment, the as- sembly participants engaged in reflection and conversation about what they found both comforting and challenging in what Sandra said. The second part of Sandra’s presentation, “Exploring the Present,” led participants to share ideas about the ministe- rial needs IHMs are being called to meet and how those needs might be met. Participants were asked what they might be willing to risk for the sake of the mission. The third segment of the presentation focused on “Mov- ing into the Future,” and posed these questions for discus- sion: 1. What is God drawing me towards? 2. What is God drawing us towards? How do I fit into that movement? 3. How am I persevering? What does persevering mean for me today? Open mic time followed table discussions. The assembly concluded with prayer for the deceased IHM sisters. The IHM celebration of jubilarians was held with Mass in the IHM Center Chapel that was followed by dinner in the Theresa Maxis Conference Center.

Moving with the Spirit in Chicago One hundred fifty Sisters of IHM, Sisters of St. Casimir and Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius gathered in Chicago at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Casimir for the fourth tri-community meeting, Moving with the Spirit, August 2-5. The SSC hostesses attended to every minute detail of hospitality. Guest presenter, Margaret Silf, addressed participants Friday and Saturday mornings on the theme of contemplation. Margaret’s presentations were filled with imagery and story. Listeners will remember the pertinent analogies made through the stories of Humpty Dumpty, the cacoon, stained glass, and the lamp in the center of the room. Some of Margaret’s key points included:

Sometimes it takes a bolt of lightening to release our creativity and kick-start the emergence of a new way of thinking, or doing or being. First we have to be willing to let things die when the time is right. Second, we have to be willing to tolerate, and even welcome, interruptions to the smooth running of our lives. They may be “annunciations.” Third, we need to learn to listen to the subtle movements in our hearts that help us to get in touch with whatever “strange attraction” is working within us. We need to listen to the movements of the Holy Spirit.

Each afternoon was planned by the SSC Sisters and included a boat ride on the Chicago River and Lake Michi-gan and a double-decker bus tour of the city. Saturday, a free day, provided an opportunity for sisters to visit city attractions such as Navy Pier, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, the Field Museum and the Art Institute. Liturgies, prayer, meals and socials were planned with a sensitivity to the three congregations’ shared heritage and deepening commitment to collaborative efforts. Many who attended the gathering spoke of the experience as enjoyable, enlightening and entertaining. Many sisters expressed their deep gratitude for the warm and gracious hospitality extended to them by the Sisters of St. Casimir and assured their continuing prayer for them and the needs of their congregation.

The sisters were waiting for the bus to arrive from Pennsylvania. Their warm welcome was a great start to a great weekend.

Serving Seniors at Marydale The hottest days of the summer could not melt the spirits of the IHM Sisters, associ-ates and volunteers who participated in the IHM Service Trip, July 15-21, 2012. Sister Mary Rita Smith, pastoral care and service coordinator at Marydale, designed the project and con-tacted residents. Each day sixteen volunteers reported to Sister Mary Rita for work assignments. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the big yellow bus arrived from Saint Mark’s High School, Wilmington, Delaware, bringing seventeen more strong and eager student and faculty volunteers. Together, they scrubbed kitchens and bath-rooms, cleaned windows, polished furniture, shampooed carpets, weeded gardens, trimmed shrubbery, painted benches, set up the dining area, helped prepare and serve meals and did anything else residents requested. Relationships among volunteers and senior residents deepened as they talked, ate, sang, prayed and enter-tained each other. Sister Sandy Grieco’s volunteers from Saint Mark’s hosted the group from Scranton on Wednesday eve-ning which began with prayer lead by Sister Redempta Sweeney. Saint Mark’s provided a meal, a postcard sta-tion and lots of table games and fun in the gym. T-shirts were exchanged and friendships formed among service oriented teens. With their work completed, the Scranton group spent some time in reflection on the grounds of Marydale. At their closing prayer ritual, each volunteer expressed sincere gratitude for the wonderful days of prayer, commu-nity, service and fun they experienced while living, working and praying with the IHM Sisters.

This biography of Father Gillet is dedicated to the more than six thousand valiant women who have lived vowed lives as Sisters, Servants of the

Immaculate Heart of Mary since their founding in 1845. Afire with the spirit and zeal of

Louis Gillet and Theresa Maxis Duchemin, they have served in religious, educational, scientific

and administrative fields on six continents, representing the three IHM Motherhouses of

Monroe, Immaculata, and Scranton. Moreover, this work is also lovingly dedicated to the more than six hundred Oblate Sisters of Providence, Baltimore, Maryland, – for it was these women

religious who first welcomed the ministry of Father Gillet into their convent in 1843, and from their number came two of the first IHM members who established a community in a log cabin on the

banks of the River Raisin in Monroe, Michigan.

“I hope this work will be a prelude to a deeper appreciation of

Louis Florent/Marie-Célestin Gillet...”- Gilbert Ahr Enderle, C.Ss.R.

Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West

By: Dorothy WickendenReviewed by: Sister Mary Joan Kelleher

This is the story to surpass all stories! But it is not a story! Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamund Underwood, gradu-ates of Smith College, daughters of wealth from Auburn,

New York, decide to leave Auburn in 1916 and head to Elkhead, Colorado, to teach school. This story is based on letters that Dorothy Wickenden had received from her mother that were written by her grandmother, Dorothy Woodruff. The letters showed two very independent women who rejected the conventional life destined for them. They decided, after graduation and a trip to Europe, to accept a teaching job in Colorado. The trip by railroad over the Continental Divide took five days. They stopped at Chicago to meet J. Platt Underwood, an uncle of Rosamund. They stayed at his home overnight and continued on their way the next day. Terry Carpenter, a friend of a friend, who had encouraged their coming west to Elkhead, Colorado, was anxiously looking forward to their arrival. They were to teach in a consolidated school which he and his neighbors built. No one in the women’s community had ever been hired by anyone, so this was, to say the least, shocking to their families and friends. Both women were determined, however, to go “west.” After traveling by railroad, they went by wagon to Elkhead. Life was about to be very different for Dorothy and Rosamund. They were to live with a family of homesteaders, ride several miles to school every day on horseback in all kinds of weather. The students were poor; they walked or skied to school. However, their lives were to be forever changed by these wonderful women. The lives of Dorothy and Rosamund were also changed. Amid the hardships, they grew to love their students and to appreciate how willing they were to learn. What Dorothy and Rosamund did not realize was that Terry Carpenter had hoped that they would become brides for the local men. He was more successful than he had hoped. Rosamund married Bob Perry, in Auburn; Dorothy married Lemuel Hillman, four days later in Auburn. Let me quote from Maile Meloy, author of “Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It”: “Dorothy Wickender has beautifully captured a world in transition, a pivotal chapter not just in the life of her bold and spirited grandmother but also in the life of the American West.” You will love these women!
