Today’s match against our neighbours from Hall 16 was predicted to be very different from our usual walk-in-the-park games and the first quarter of the match proved that forecast right.

Hall 16 put up a good fight, making sure our girls worked for every ball they put through the basket, concluding the first quarter with a score of 9-6 to Hall 3. However our team was only just getting warmed up as they picked up momentum and widened the lead in the consecutive quarters. The match was well played on both sides however our hall was awarded many free throws due to frequent fouls on Hall 16’s part. Faced against a very aggressive opposing team, our girls were evidently exhausted by the last quarter but continued scoring baskets with grace.

Both teams were so closely matched that we even racked up an even 1-1 score on the injury front. Thankfully our player was up on her feet in no time. We hope the same is true for Hall 16’s player.

Close a match as it was, our girls never once gave up the lead, securing yet another win for our hall. Good job on taking down today’s tougher opponents and we hope to have more good news in the coming games!

Semi Finals: 2-3

It was crucial that the Scrabble team won rounds 6 and 7 with a perfect 10 out of 10 boards in order to have a good chance at the finals this year. With one of our doubles players from Day 1, Tanya, unable to play due to work commitments, the team was left in quite a predicament. With the Tanya and Sze Wing match up severed, team captain Russell had to once again change the player line up. Charmaine was to pair up with Sze Wing, a risky move as the two had never played together before. Thankfully the pair managed to win both boards that they played together by huge margins.

Unfortunately, the team only managed a 3-2 win against Hall 2 and a 4-1 win against Hall 8. While the team failed to top the group based on the total number of boards won, they did an excellent job with the boards they did win, topping the group in terms of spread. Although the team made it through to the semi-finals, they were to play the top of the other group, Hall 6, making qualifying for the finals no easy feat.

With fingers crossed, our players entered the arena hoping for good luck in tile drawing and counted on another unexpected win like the one they achieved the day before. Our players put up a good fight against the defending champions and only lost to Hall 6 3-2 as opposed to the dreaded 5-0. All in all it was a good effort made by the team, winning a total of 6 out of 8 rounds played. With a year in between now until next year’s IHG, the team still has time to learn a couple thousand more words in order to level the playing field against Hall 6 in next year’s games.
