The North needed rice, available only in the South, and the South needed Northern manufactures. This separated the two economies which had been linked together in the past. Caused problems in daily lives of koreans: allowed north to cut off south’s electricity at will)

Soviets utilitzed already present communists headed by kim to launch a huge campaign to impose communist values, ideology and system.

US made decisions that angered koreans: focused on dealing with Japan's surrender and the repatriation of Japanese to Japan. Many Japanese officials remained in office until 1946.

The American military authorities focused on dealing with Japan's surrender and the repatriation of Japanese to Japan. Little changed at first in the administration of the south; officials then serving under the Japanese authorities remained in their positions..The United States dismissed the Japanese governor general in the middle of September, but many Japanese officials stayed in office until 1946. Those decisions angered many Koreans, as during Colonial rule, Koreans were treated as second class citizens, as Jie Hui has mentioned earlier. Thus, they were against having the same Japanese officials who had suppresed their culture as advisors to the US military

They also Suppressed and Censored popular government, People’s Republic of Korea, which had been put in place before US came. It was eventually outlawed, much to the anger of many koreans. Instead, the US created an advisory council Korea Democratic Party (KDP) which mainly consisted of large landowners, wealthy businesspeople, and former colonial officials. Naturally, these people would be unable to empathize with troubles of the lower to middle class koreans, and KOreans did not favour this party.

NEXT SLIDEAutumn uprising, also known as Daegu riot was Led by peasants protesting against US military government policies, campaigning for better working conditions, higher wages, the right to organize, and the release of political prisoners. They stoned the police and yelled out “Kill the police!” In response to the raid, police shot and killed factory workers. all in all, death of 38 policemen, 163 civil workers, and 73 civilians

Result: 7,500 other people who suffered at the incident. Some victims were arrested and tortured, and homes were damaged or confiscated .The families of the victims had to endure the shame of being viewed as criminals. Koreans were angered by the way the police had dealt with the situation- with violence
