Dear friends of ISP,

We come to you again with gratitude for another incredibly successful year. As we reflect back on fiscal year 2015, we are humbled by how many donors, volunteers, and organizations came together to provide an experience of hope to over 2,000 men and women across the United States and Canada. We also welcomed three new program cities to our national network: San Diego, CA; Orange County, CA; and Louisville, KY.

Without you, our hands and feet across the ISP network, we could not have done this work. One women retreatant told us this summer that “even given my health, I can live each day to the fullest and grow...spiritually.” She went on to express thanks for the team members, saying “I deeply appreciate all you women and all you’ve taught me and all you’ve done for me and my journey with God.” We echo her gratitude, knowing that without our dedicated volunteers or generous benefactors, we could not provide these experiences of fullness and growth.

Fiscal year 2015 was the fourth of our five-year Strategic Vision, and we are already looking ahead, beginning to imagine what our network will look like in the future.

However, we know that no matter the shape or size, we will only be able to continue this sacred work of hope and transformation because of advocates and allies like you. Over 1,000 individuals, families, institutions, parishes, and religious communities support our work each year. You are a seamless part of the fabric of ISP, and we look forward to the gifts and graces this next year will hold.

Blessings,

Thomas D. DrexlerExecutive Director

Camille DevaneyChair of the Board of Directors

We offer men and women who are homeless and in recovery from addiction the opportunity to change their lives. We believe that Ignatian spirituality and Ignatian retreats are an effective and important resource in laying a foundation of hope which can lead to long-lasting transformation.

I attended my first ISP retreat in the fall of 2007. It was the very first Baltimore ISP retreat. I was in a long-term treatment and recovery program and my counselor told me that he thought that I would be a good candidate. I had no prior knowledge of retreats.

I was a little skeptical as it sounded like a religious retreat. I thought it would be proselytizing. Nonetheless, because of where I was and the people I was around, I was willing to try new things. I had been sober for about 8 months and I felt like I was in a good place to try it.

I knew I would be away for one night but that was ALL I knew. I didn’t know who I was going with, where I was going or what we would be doing. At that time, I didn’t worry about it. I trusted the director of my program—they had never pointed me in the wrong direction and I knew it would not be to my detriment. I was confused but I had an open spirit.

Confusion was the first thing I felt. The other part was that I thought it was some more of the same BS. That changed when I met Wayne Richard and Bill Creed, SJ, who were helping to lead the retreat. Fr. Creed impressed me. When he opened his mouth he was not proselytizing, he was talking about where I wanted to go.

The exercises brought that out. The “Fear and Trust” exercise allowed me to be open. During that exercise Wayne and I connected and I realized that maybe I could be open with this group. I was impressed by this big guy. He was alright. I am still friends with Wayne. His positive energy made me pay attention because I wanted to have that as well. We did more in a relaxing day on retreat than I would have done at the recovery house.

At the end of the day I felt good and turned on to the program. With the way that the energy was flowing, I felt invigorated and excited and looking forward to what would happen next. I had a thousand questions. What would happen after Bill and Wayne left and went back to Chicago?

I had arrived at the recovery house because I had given up most things in my life to

Story of hope: Jimi

continue using drugs. It was bit by bit, but eventually it became a full-time job. Since I was a veteran, my wife and I had gone to the VA to enroll me in a program. After leaving, it didn’t take me a week to start using again. They gave me options but they weren’t the ones I wanted. I went to this program twice and by the time I got to the retreat, I had been to four different recovery programs.

What was different on the ISP retreat was that I had begun to look at myself. I realized that I was responsible for everything in my life. I was the common denominator. Life didn’t happen to me, I happened to it. Until I looked at myself and realized I was trying to live my life without any principles at all, I could not recover. Some of the things that I held were truly false. Some of the things that I had to let go of hurt. What I saw wasn’t pretty but it was me and I had to work on what was real. I had to be accountable for what I did. I had to take personal responsibility for my life and I was trying to do this when I went on retreat.

I thought I was going to leave all of the bonding and beauty that I had found on retreat at the retreat house, but what I found was that that peace was actually inside of me. What I found on the retreat was inside of my soul and it was helping me to sustain myself. As a result of learning how to sit still with myself on the retreat, I was able to find myself and find that peace. Sue Cesare, who had organized the retreat, helped me to reconnect and remember that. She and Wayne fed my spirit. It helped me to keep what I had found on retreat as a part of my life after the retreat was over.

Sue asked me to be a witness on the next retreat. I continued my journey with Woody Carey, the director of South Baltimore Station, and then I got to know the rest of the ISP team. They taught me how to share with other men how the retreat had affected me. It was what I needed at the right time. I have been involved with the team now for several years. The ISP retreat gives every retreatant hope. All of them. The ones who are witnesses, the ones who only attend once, the ones who aren’t ready. It gives each of them hope.

Jimi has been sober for eight years and is working as an artist in Baltimore. His artwork is available through his website, www.pencilmania.net. He is still an active member of the men’s ISP team.
