IGCSE  Gr.9  ART  Unit-­‐2:  Graphic  Design-­‐Project  2:  Magazine  Cover  Bobby  Yoshinami-­‐Hitachi  9M    Aim:  Design  a  magazine  cover  for  the  TIME  magazine.  Make  a  cover  for   a   special   edition   issue   concerning   the   following   topic:  climate  change  (Global  warming)  or  the  economic  crash.    The   topic  of  climate  change  should  relate   to   the  current   issue  of  global  warming  that  this  world  is  facing.    Make  an  attractive  cover   that   can   easily   be   noticed   that   it   is   about   the   rising  temperature.  Make  sure  that  the  design  is  addressed  to  a  wide  range  of  adults  and  that  it  is  in  an  appropriate  form.    The  topic  of  the  economic  crash  should  refer  to  the  most  recent  economic   slump,   which   includes   the   Lehman   Shock   of  September  2008  and  other  activity.  Again  this  design  should  be  directed  to  adults  from  young  to  old,  high-­‐class  businessmen  to  housewives.    This  design  will  be  assigned  to  be  due  for  the  15th  of  February,  2011,  two  weeks  from  to  day.        Good  luck                              

       Developing  Ideas:  1. For   this   project   I   particularly   struggled   with   choosing   my  final  design.  I  had  a  lot  of  ideas,  however  many  of  them  were  either   too  complex  or   just  unrealistic.  For  example,  when   I  first   started   this   project   I   had   an   Idea   for   the   topic   of   the  economic   crash.   My   idea   was   to   put   people   from   the   bill  such   as   George   Washington,   Abraham   Lincoln   and   other  people  on   a  big   luxury  boat,  which  was   going   to   represent  America,  all  rich  big  and  wealthy.  Then  I  was  going  to  put  a  hole  in  the  boat  and  make  it  sink.    However  this  is  how  far  I  got  to  till  I  realized  that  it  was  to  complex  to  finish.    I  got  the  idea  of  this  from  a  few  magazine  covers.  

           

             2. Because  my  design  ideas  were  too  complex  I  tried  making  a  simpler,  this  became  my  final  design.  I  got  inspired  by  This  picture  is  composed  of  many  letters.  Although  this  looks  complex  I  made  my    design  simple.

1. To  make  the  background  magazine  layout   I   first   got   a   plane   red  background.   Then   I   used   the   grid  to   measure   the   size   of   the   red  border.  After  I  highlighted  the  area  I   used   the   brush   tool   to   color   the  center   white.   Then   my   time  magazine  border  was  done.  

     

 2.   For   this   design   I   used   text   edit.  For   the   “TIME”   I   first   made   a   big  text   box   and   then   typed,   “TIME”  using   a   large   font.   Then   I   made  another   text   box   and   using   small  $   signs   I   traced   it.   I  used   the  same  technique   for   the   “is”   and   the  “$”.  

               

3.  However  before  I  got  to  this  final  piece  I  tested  a  few  other  designs.   ,   Which   were:
