There is no better time of year to be a part of Brisbane than at Christmas time. Not only is it an occasion when family and friends come together, but when Brisbane residents reach out to one another in the spirit of the

season.

With so many wonderful events happening across the city during this

festive season, one such event remains a firm favourite with families every year. The

Carols in the City is a highly-anticipated night of celebration, music, singing and old-fashioned family

fun. Those that have been before will all agree that the joyous atmosphere makes it impossible to avoid being taken-over by Christmas cheer.

Audiences are in for a real treat with a star-studded line-up of talent this year. Some of our headline artists include Paulini, Jack Vidgen, Debra Byrne, Colin Buchanan, Mirusia, Silvie Paladino and La Forza - just to name a few! We also have a world-class backing band, dance troupe and choir to add to the night’s entertainment.

Of course no Carols would be complete without an appearance by the ‘man in red’ himself – Santa! So get ready to sing-a-long to all your Christmas favourites, as well as some modern day music and songs for the kids.

As Lord Mayor, it is my honour to welcome you to the 2013 IGA Carols in the City, I hope you enjoy tonight’s performances.

I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year.

Graham Quirk Lord Mayor

If you had to come up with a word to describe our world at this present time you would probably not

use the word ‘peaceful’.

This lack of peace or rest is not just seen in international affairs or bullying in the workplace and schools. Many homes are not in a state of

peace. And within individuals there is a great restlessness. Our world is not at peace because

we aren’t.

One of the nice things about Christmas is that people tend to put aside their differences and be friendlier. Even our politicians seem to be friendlier towards each other at this time of the year! Christmas is somehow seen to be bigger than our differences. Somehow, Christmas encourages peace.

The declaration of “Peace on Earth”, made by Angels at the birth of Jesus, was and still is a very relevant peace.

The peace they heralded was far greater than a peace between nations or in a workplace, home or even within us. They were announcing that a peace between God and us was now available! It’s a rare peace because it’s initiated and paid for by the offended party, God. God sent the ultimate peacemaker, His own son, Jesus.

Jesus achieved a lasting peace once and for all by dealing with what alienates us from God - our rebelling against his rule. The Bible has a word for that rebellion and that word is sin.

God did not just push aside our sin for a while or ignore it. No - he dealt with it completely. The great proof that God wants us to be at peace with Him is evidenced by Jesus’ suffering and dying to achieve it. It’s a peace that comes to us when we stop resisting Him and submit to His rule.

Have a happy and peaceful Christmas!

Jack VidgenIn 2011, Jack Vidgen was catapulted into the spotlight when his

audition for Australia’s Got Talent brought the house down. Youtube footage of his performances garnered over 100 million

views worldwide, resulting in international interest in the young singer who has an endearing combination of sincerity and purity. Sony Music Australia signed Jack up and released two albums - his Gold selling debut album “Yes I Am” and his more recent “Inspire”. Over the past 12 months Jack has travelled to Japan, China and the USA. He has wowed sell-out crowds in LA, New York, Chicago and Houston, performed on Hunan TV China, and was artist of the week

on Brazil radio. Now 16 years of age, Jack moves between LA and his home town Sydney, entertaining and also helping

many causes. If you haven’t heard Jack Vidgen sing before, you are in for a treat, he will amaze you with his dulcet tones and

warm sincerity.

PauliniPaulini has been heralded as one of the finest vocalists and performers to come out of Australia. This Fijian born songstress rose to prominence on the top of the Australian ARIA Charts in 2004 with her debut Platinum album “One Determined Heart” and her Platinum smash single “Angel Eyes” – both hitting the #1 spot (Angel Eyes remained at the top of the charts for 6 consecutive weeks). In fact, Paulini is one of only ten Australian female solo artists to have a #1 album.

Paulini is now moving her career forward in a fresh and positive manner, continuing to record new material and cementing her status as a songwriter. Her most recent single “Scarless” was released independently in November to help raise awareness for White Ribbon Day and the White Ribbon Campaign.

Over the years Paulini has grown as a performer, a songwriter and a woman, steering her own destiny in her music career and making choices that she truly feels good about. “I’m at the happiest point in my life. I’m spending my spare time in the studio writing and creating my own work.”

Silvie PaladinoSilvie Paladino has established herself as one of Australia’s most versatile and talented entertainers. At age 18, Silvie was offered the role of Eponine in Les Miserables, touring Australia and New Zealand to critical acclaim. In 1992 she accepted an invitation to perform the role of Eponine in the London production of Les Miserables and due to the success of this, returned to London in 1997 to perform the role of Fantine in Les Miserables for a successful two-year season. Silvie’s concert performances include lead artist with symphony orchestras throughout Australia. She has also toured with international singer Patrizio Buanne and performed for celebrated theatrical composers, Stephen Schwartz and Stephen Sondheim. Silvie received critical acclaim and a Green Room Award (Music Theatre Actress in a Leading Role) for her performance of Florence in Chess - the Musical at the State Theatre. Most recently she was also nominated for a Helpmann Award for the same performance. Apart from her theatrical credits, she is well known to Australian audiences through her regular television appearances including Melbourne’s Carols by Candlelight and Brisbane’s IGA Lord Mayor’s Carols in the City. She has released 3 CDs including her Christmas album entitled Silvie Paladino – Christmas List and her solo album, On My Own. She has also featured at many special events such as the world-wide telecast of the Rugby League Grand Final, the Australian Football League Grand Final, Boxing Day Cricket Test and a concert in Beijing as part of the 2008 Olympics and we’re just so pleased to have her back at the Brisbane Riverstage.

MirusiaMirusia is a Brisbane born and based soprano who has enjoyed

many successes so far in her career. As a collaborating artist with Andre’ Rieu, she has performed in many countries all over the

world including The Netherlands, England, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Japan, France and Belgium. Some other highlights in her career include: ‘Redlands Young Citizen of the Year 2004’, the first winner ever of the ‘Redlands Eisteddfods Aria Competition‘, ‘Redlands Eisteddfod Aggregate Award’ and the winner of the 2005 ‘Spring Festival Talent Quest’. She arrived on our TV screens after winning the Brisbane Lord

Mayor’s Carols new talent competition in 2005, a competition that continues on and that we are very proud of. In June

2006, Mirusia was announced as the youngest ever winner of the prestigious ‘Dame Joan Sutherland Opera Award’. That year

she also received numerous scholarships and bursaries for her outstanding recitals at the QLD Conservatorium of Music including

the ‘Elizabeth Muir Memorial Prize’, ‘Brisbane Womens Club’ and ‘Margaret Haysom Bursaries’, and the ‘Linda Edith Allen Scholarship’ (two times!). In 2008,

Mirusia played a major role in André Rieu’s, ‘World Stadium Tour’, which brought her back to her home country of Australia. ‘The World Stadium Tour’ broke all the world records as the largest set, cast and crew to ever tour in the history of the music industry. In May 2008 the CD ‘Waltzing Matilda’ went platinum within 10 days and stayed at the number one position on the Australian Pop Charts for three consecutive weeks. In 2010 André Rieu presented Mirusia in her first international solo release ‘Always & Forever’ - a CD that quickly went platinum and stayed at the number one chart position in Australia for 4 weeks. A DVD quickly followed and it too went straight to the top position on the ARIA charts, earning Mirusia an Aria #1 Chart Award in 2012, the only Classical artist to do so. It’s great to have Mirusia back to the stage where it all started in 2005.

More recently, she played an integral part in the Brisbane leg of teenage sailor Jessica Watson’s historic Welcome Home Tour. With a warm and engaging personality, it’s

no surprise Georgie gives much of her spare time to charity. She’s been an ambassador for Special Olympics Australia and now the

though the frost was cruel,When a poor man came in sight,

gath’ring winter fuel.

‘Hither, page, and stand by me, if thou know’st it, telling,

Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?’

‘Sire, he lives a good league hence, underneath the mountain,

Right against the forest fence, by Saint Agnes’ fountain.’

‘Bring me flesh and bring me wine, bring me pinelogs hither:

Thou and I will see him dine, when we bear them thither.”

Page and monarch, forth they went, forth they went together;

Through the rude wind’s wild lament and the bitter weather.

In his master’s steps he trod, where the snow lay dinted;

Heat was in the very sod which the Saint had printed.

There-fore, Christians all, be sure, wealth or rank possessing,

Ye who now will bless the poor, shall yourselves find blessing.

AWAY IN A MANGERAway in a manger,

no crib for a bed,The little Lord Jesus

laid down his sweet headThe stars in the bright sky

looked down where he lay,The little Lord Jesus

asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,

But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes

I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,

And stay by my side until morning is nigh

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay

Close by me forever, and love me, I pray

Bless all the dear children in thy tender care

And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there

GOD REST YE MERRY GENTLEMENGod rest ye merry, gentlemen Let nothing you dismay Remember, Christ, our Saviour Was born on Christmas day To save us all from Satan’s power When we were gone astray O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy Tidings of comfort and joy

From God our Heavenly Father A blessed Angel came; And unto certain Shepherds Brought tidings of the same: How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by name. O tidings of comfort and joy, Tidings of comfort and joy Comfort and joy Yes, joy, comfort and joy!

Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All other doth deface. O tidings of comfort and joy, Tidings of comfort and joy Tidings of comfort and joy Tidings of comfort and joy Tidings of comfort and joy Tidings of comfort and joy

Good tidings we bring of comfort and joy.

THE FIRST NOELThe first Noel, the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star, Shining in the East, beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

And by the light of that same star, Three wise men came from country far, To seek for a King was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

Then let us all with one accord, Sing praises to our heavenly Lord That hath made Heav’n and earth of nought, And with His blood mankind hath bought Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King. Born is the King, Born is the King of Israel.

SILENT NIGHTSilent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright ‘Round yon virgin, mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night Shepherds quake at the sight Glories stream from heaven afar Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia Christ the saviour is born, Christ the saviour is born.

Silent night, holy night Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace Jesus, Lord at thy birth, Jesus, Lord at thy birth.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government wi be on his shoulders.

And he wi be caed Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

HARK THE HERALD ANGELS SINGHark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born king; Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled: Joyful all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies, With th’angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem. Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born king!

Christ, by highest heav’n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold him come Off-spring of the virgin’s womb: Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail the incarnate Deity! Pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born king!

Hail the heav’n born Prince of Peace! Hail the Son of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, Ris’n with healing in his wings; Mild he lays his glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth. Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born king!
