by Greg ForbesA little odd and off the beaten path. That’s exactly how Pomeroy-based

freelance photographer Roger Feldhans prefers his adventures.

Those adventures stray well away from highways and lead him down dusty roads to structures of Iowa’s agriculture back-bone: barns.

Whether new, refinished or on its last leg, Feldhans searches for barns in all seasons, in all weather.

Even the sub-zero temperatures and strong winds in early January could not keep him out of fields and pastures.

Feldhans credits his hardiness to his background. Before he lived in Iowa, he and his family called Spokane, Washing-ton, and Canada home.

“I’m used to it,” he said of the cold.In fact, winter shooting is his prefer-

ence because it provides unobstructed views of a structure’s most intricate fea-tures.

“I like winter. A lot of barns and things,

you can’t see because of the trees. Some-times it’s tough to get a good view,” ex-plained the off-road photographer. “In the winter, snowfall cleans everything up, no matter how messy the place might be.”

He returns to a majority of his subjects every season to capture a different mood of the barns. Feldhans added that he par-

ticularly enjoys the tall corn of summer where just the roofs of the barns can be seen at the right angle.

This odyssey has led him to approxi-mately 700 barns and journeys that amass 3,000 miles a month, possibly more.

“Some months are a lot higher,” he

said. “It’s one of those border to border things. I never even leave the state.”

Feldhans said he is often asked how he can log so many miles without traveling across state lines. And his reply is simply that Iowa is more than a couple of inter-states and major highways.

“About 95 percent of it is get on a grav-el road, point in one direction and keep driving,” he said.

He added that his love for back roads stemmed from his childhood in Canada and Washington. Between big city life in Spokane and an isolated town in Canada, Feldhans said his thirst for adventure was fairly limited.

“We didn’t have a lot of barns in ei-ther place but when we got to Iowa, it was so rural and open and we could just go places and see things,” he said. “Iowa became a whole new experience of get-ting out and going and feeling safe and comfortable doing it.”

Harkin: 2014 Farm Bill likely but disagreements remainby Greg Forbes

The 2014 legislative session is underway and once again, the Farm Bill issue remains a top priority.

The Farm Bill has faced a long road since 2008, with delays of a new bill leading to extensions.

The Senate last June approved a version of a new Farm Bill, which ultimately failed in the House of Rep-resentatives.

So the issue returns once more, but this time with guarded optimism.

In a question and answer email to the Denison Bul-letin and Review, United States Senator Tom Harkin said 2014 could tell a different story.

“While there have been difficulties and delays, I still believe a new farm bill will likely be enacted,” said Har-kin.

The passing of a new Farm Bill is key, Harkin ex-plained, because it allows growth in the agriculture in-dustry as well as support of the economy.

“A new farm bill allows us to update and reform farm and rural programs, such as by eliminating the direct commodity payments and replacing them with better-tailored farm income protection programs,” he said.

Harkin also provided a brief insight into the workings of the Senate’s version of the Farm Bill.

“Our Senate bill adopts a revenue-based income protection system based on the Average Crop Rev-

enue Election (ACRE) program in the 2008 bill,” his statement read. “Both the Senate and House bills also strengthen the crop insurance protection farmers can obtain for the premium dollars they pay. A new bill also allows us to extend and put new funding into several of the key rural initiatives like conservation, energy, and local foods programs.”

Though Harkin remains optimistic both branches can agree on a Farm Bill, he said a few issues still lead to dissension.

“There are some issues in the title covering com-modity programs and farm income protection, includ-ing how to set up new price protection and revenue protection programs and establish payment formulas,” Harkin said.

What will happen if a new Farm Bill is not passed, Harkin explained, may hurt in two ways.

First, Harkin said the Senate loses the ability to up-date and reform programs that need the most attention and second, vital programs may be left without fund-ing.

Despite disagreements, Harkin said differences sim-ply must be resolved through teamwork and level head-ed discussions.

“Simply stated, it will require good faith negotiations, creative problem solving, and a shared commitment to reaching an agreement and enacting a new farm bill.”

Grassley says his farm bill provision will save $387 million

Senator Chuck Grassley said in a release that a new cost estimate from the Congressional Budget Office shows that his provisions to place a hard cap on farm payments and ensure that farm payments go to people actively en-gaged in farming save $387 million over 10 years, which is an additional $210 million over previous estimates.

Grassley asked the Congressional Budget Office to re-score his provisions after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report in October 2013 showing a great deal of subterfuge of the current actively engaged law, with one farm claiming it needed 16 active “man-agers” who didn’t have to verify work on the farm. The GAO wrote that the legislative language in the Senate and House passed farm bills would be an appropriate fix to the agency’s findings.

“With a $17 trillion debt, any additional savings are a tremendous benefit,” Grassley said. “The majority of Con-gress backs these provisions and the last two presidents have been supportive of significant reform like this. Both the House and Senate bills contain our common sense reforms. It’s a no brainer to keep the provisions as is. It would be short-sighted to allow a parochial mindset to undermine important and necessary reforms.”

I have been plagued with migraines and hor-rible headaches since I was 13 years old. Through the years, I found different ways to relieve the pain that work for me and do not in-clude drugs.

(Note: I am not a doctor and this is not actual medi-cal advice for migraines. Also, I am not entirely an-ti-medication. However, if I can find something that works without taking pain medication, I will.)

I use things like heating pads on my neck, medita-tion, stretching, acupres-sure and chiropractic care to rid myself of the pain. These are the things that work for me.

Plus, I have two wonder-ful sons who have figured out over the years to be re-

ally quiet when I’m trying to battle one.

Sometimes, I can get rid of it pretty easily, and some-times it takes a couple days. I had one that lasted almost a week off and on. That was one miserable week!

And, if you or someone you know has experienced one, you know that it’s not just a bad headache. Mi-graines affect your entire body, like a warped flu or virus that is attached to a never-ending sledgeham-mer to your head.

Good times! So, my husband and the

big kid traveled to Denver last week to the big cattle show, leaving the little kid and me to tend to the farm. Really, it wasn’t just us. My husband hired an awesome person to come and feed the

cattle at night, but the little kid and I still needed to feed the 4-H cattle in the morn-ings. (Said awesome person filled up the feed buckets for us so all we had to do was dump them into the bunks.)

The big kid took his heif-er named Rachel to Denver.

My parents decided to go to Denver as well because the show was during the big kid’s 16th birthday. I had to stay home because the little kid has just bridged up to Boy Scouts and chose to at-tend his first winter camp instead.

Back to the cattle show, Rachel had an injury in late November and has been working to get healthy ever since.

She’s a good heifer and works pretty well with the big kid, but had been a bit

antsy before the show. Here’s where the story

gets fun.

After my mom told me how he did showing the calf, she let me in on my husband’s big secret. They hired a cow-chiropractor to work on Rachel.

Seriously.Working with Iowa Farm

& Ranch, we’ve heard of some pretty unique ways to raise cattle. Who can for-get the dairy cattle on water beds?

But, I had never heard of a chiropractor working on cattle. My mom said Ra-chel calmed down and was much easier to work with.

Of course she would be easier to work with, I told her, because she wasn’t in all that pain anymore.

And, it only cost about $10 more than when I go to the chiropractor.

Now that’s a deal!

BARNS, from Page 1

Admittedly, he has gotten lost a time or two in his pursuit of barns old and new and his solo journeys concern family and friends. But Feldhans said the solitude is a major part of the adventure.

“That’s part of the beauty of it because you are not locked into a location,” he said. “You’re just going. You see some-thing half a mile away and you just go and hope there is something when you get there.”

Feldhans’ fascination with Iowa’s barns began as a freelance photographer where he took photos for calendars, posters and advertisements.

“A lot of that was rural stuff,” he said. What began as pictures for freelance

projects soon developed into a hobby. Through his Facebook profile, Feldhans said more eyes saw his work and his au-dience grew.

“That’s (Facebook) how this got going,” he explained. “People were tell-ing me, ‘You need to take more pictures of barns.’ So I did that.”

He began his back road tour casually at first but his pace left much to be desired.

“It became a one-year project. I didn’t get everywhere I wanted to and didn’t see everything I wanted to see,” he said.

Feldhans initially planned to put his pic-tures and accompanying stories together in a book but demand for his pictures in a physical form necessitated a preview. A 12-month wall calendar became the an-swer to the countless requests. This year marked the first year for a calendar. Each month has a large color picture with four smaller black and white photos on the bottom half of the page.

Calendars are available at Choice Print-ing in Fort Dodge or by emailing Feldhans at [email protected]. They are $12 each or two for $20 with a $5 charge for shipping.

A book is still in Feldhans’ plans - a project he wants to complete as a thank you to the people that have made his jour-ney possible.

“When I started, I knew I wasn’t doing due diligence to the stories behind the barns and I really want to correct that and get it all pulled in to the book,” he said.

His interactions with landowners have yielded personal stories of recollection from a childhood spent on the farm property. Some have told Feldhans of hours spent in the fields while one viewer on Facebook vividly recalled the smell of her uncle light-ing a cigarette after a long day of chores.

As his pictures spread, so does his leg-end. With a long, scruffy beard and gruff appearance, Feldhans admits that he may be an odd sight at first. But fortunately for him, almost all of his encounters have led to friendly conversation and addition-al contacts.

“Some landowners will call people and say, ‘This guy is coming over to take pic-

tures. He looks a little scruffy but he’s good,’” he explained.

And often times, word of his project travels faster than his Scion automobile.

“People sometimes come outside when I’m there and say ‘I was wondering when you were going to get here,’” he recalled. “The word gets out there and I’m glad it did because it’s taken a lot of the ques-tions out of it.

“They realize I’m taking pictures and everyone I talk to or who lets me on their property, I give them a copy or print of their barn,” he said. “(The prints) let them see it in a whole new way.”

The prints help form a bond, tell a story and even give Feldhans a push in the right direction now and then. He explained that sometimes he receives information of a nearby must-see barn and even a tank of gas or lunch for his interest in rural Iowa.

“The whole state is that way,” he said. “The people really make it. A lot of places I return to is because of the way I was treated while I was there.”

His travels aren’t all sunshine and smiles though, he explained. Even though he never enters private property without permission, Feldhans said some people have yelled at him while still on public roads or areas. But when that happens, he doesn’t argue, he simply clicks ‘Delete’ on his camera and searches for the next

stop. But the good outweighs the bad, for the

most part, and Feldhans said he encour-ages anyone to walk in his shoes, regard-less of photographic skills.

“Part of my thinking is, I want people to know they can go out and do this,” he said.

“It doesn’t take expensive equipment. You just get a camera and you go.”

Iowa’s back roads hide beautiful barn photographs

A brick bodied barn calls a stretch of road between Rockwell City and Fort Dodge home. All photographs courtesy of Roger Feldhans. Some of the photos have been cropped.

The round barn near Storm Lake is a strange sight in the western part of the state.

The barn with a unique cross hatch pattern and brick silo sits somewhere south of Fort Dodge.

Snow falls on this barn on Highway 3 as a curious horse pokes its head out for a closer view.

A barn south of Manning caught photographer Roger Feldhans’ eye as he traveled over a hill on a country road.

Data used for policies that affect farms and farm families

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will spend the next few months contacting farmers and ranchers across the nation to conduct the Agricultural Re-source Management Survey (ARMS).

The results of the survey will serve as a baseline for numerous federal policies and programs that affect U.S. farms and farm families, large and small.

“ARMS is our primary tool for gaug-ing the financial condition and production practices on American farms and ranches,” said Greg Thessen, director of the NASS Iowa field office. “By participating in this survey, Iowa farmers directly impact the decisions that affect them, their families

and their operations.” Thessen said producers were selected to

participate in the survey through a random sampling by size and type of farm.

The 1,700 Iowa producers selected rep-resent about two percent of the state’s 92,200 farms. Each one of those complet-ed forms represents many other farms in Iowa.

Thessen said normally 65 to 70 percent of those selected respond to the survey. He said it probably takes just over an hour to complete the survey, depending on how well a producer maintains farm records.

All producers selected should have al-ready received a form in the mail, accom-panied by a letter.

A second mailing will be sent on January 31, and a couple weeks later the personal follow-up interviews will begin.

Have Your Turbo Blades Sharpened Now Before Spring Tillage And Get Better Crop Residue Management

1-IFRSW (TURBO BLADES-VETTER) VM

It’s an age-old problem in agriculture: ground-engaging tools – disks, coulters and wavy blades that penetrate soil and cut crop residues – eventually go dull. Until now, there was no way to realistically sharpen a wavy-bladed implement with dull blades. “It is with great excitement that Case IH announces the Robo-Sharpener™,” says Rob Zemenchik, Sales and Marketing Manager, Case IH Tillage Products. “It’s the world’s first manually supervised ‘field-service robot’ for sharpening wavy or regular tillage blades on the Case IH True-Tandem 330 Turbo.”

Seed Spacing

Depth of soybean seed plays a major factor in whether seedlings are able to emerge. In most cases, farmers aim to plant soybeans between 1 and 1 ½ inches deep. In a university study, researchers showed that as depth varied from optimum soybean plant emergence rate dropped by as much as 70%. Source: Iowa State University, North Dakota State University

As the depth of planting increases, the emergence rate of plants falls off considerable. Only White Planter has a patented calibration system for setting and quickly verifying that you’re planting at a precise depth.

November 15 proposal to lower the renewable volume obligation (RVO) from the annual target of 14.4 billion gallons to 13 billion gallons, elected officials and farm organizations in the Midwest have been urging individ-uals to make their voices heard to stop what they say would further decrease the falling corn prices and harm the rural economy.

In its November 15 announcement, the EPA said near-ly all gasoline sold in the United States is now E10 and that while the production of renewable fuels has been growing rapidly in recent years, “advances in vehicle fuel economy and other economic factors have pushed gasoline consumption far lower than what was expected when Congress passed the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) in 2007.”

The EPA reasoned that the United States is at the “E10 blend wall,” the point at which the E10 fuel pool is satu-rated with ethanol. The agency said if gasoline demand continues to decline, as is currently forecast, continuing growth in the use of ethanol would require greater use of higher ethanol blends such as E15 and E85.

A 60-day comment period on the proposal expires at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time (10:59 Central) on Tuesday, January 28. Until that time, individuals can continue to post comments online about the EPA’s proposal by log-ging onto www.regulations.gov and clicking on “Renew-able Fuel Standard Program; 2014 Standards” under the “What’s Trending” headline. Emails can also be sent to [email protected].

January 28 is, coincidentally, the date for the eighth annual Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit and Trade Show at the Meadows Conference Center at Prairie Meadows in Altoona.

In response to a question if the EPA’s proposal would be reversed, U.S. Senator Grassley said on January 22 in an email to the Iowa Farm and Ranch, “It’s up to

President Obama, who claims to favor more renewable energy, to make sure the EPA proposal is revised before it becomes final. The EPA reports to the President. He has the ability to reverse the EPA proposal if he chooses to do so.”

During his weekly Capitol Hill Report on Thursday, January 16, Grassley said he hopes more Iowans will go to the EPA’s website to comment.

“We have the most of all states to lose if this rule would go into effect,” he said.

According to the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production with 42 ethanol refineries capable of producing more than 3.8 billion gallons annually, three cellulosic ethanol facilities currently under construction and 12 biodiesel facilities with the capacity to produce nearly 315 million gallons annually.

Grassley told the Iowa Farm and Ranch on January 22 that the EPA must read and take into consideration the arguments made in the public comments.

“EPA Administrator (Gina) McCarthy made clear in a meeting with senators that the agency wants to hear from stakeholders and will closely review the informa-tion it receives,” Grassley said. “I hope the input will have an impact on the agency’s decision.”

He added that he has voiced his concerns and opposi-tion to the EPA proposal to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and McCarthy and to President Obama’s staff.

The RFS faces other challenges. Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) in Decem-ber introduced the Corn Ethanol Mandate Elimination Act that would change a RFS mandate that requires corn ethanol to be blended with gasoline.

Grassley said it is unlikely this bill would make its way through Congress this year. He said many members of the House and Senate understand the value of the RFS and will continue to fight to protect it.

“And I would expect President Obama, who cam-paigned in Iowa on his support for biofuels, to veto any legislation that would undermine this successful policy,” Grassley said.

A week after the EPA announced its proposal for the

RFS, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds, Senator Grassley, Representative Steve King and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey joined the Iowa Renewable Fuels Coalition to urge the Obama Administration and the EPA to restore strong blending levels for 2014 at a “Defend the RFS” event at Lincoln-way Energy near Nevada.

Branstad later brought together a bipartisan group of six governors to sign on to a letter to President Obama, McCarthy and Vilsack in expressing their support for a strong RFS.

The letter said, “More than 400,000 Americans depend on renewable fuels for good-paying jobs that support re-warding careers in our states. According to the Renew-able Fuels Association and LMC International, 44,500 of these jobs could be lost due to the EPA proposed rule. “

On January 7, VoteVets.org announced it was launch-ing a television ad in Iowa, aimed at protecting the RFS, spending nearly $110,000 for one week of time in the Des Moines market as well as in Washington, D.C.

On January 22, Roger Zylstra, president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association, and Mark Recker, chair of the Iowa Corn committee that promoted ethanol, hosted a media conference call.

“One of the real concerns going forward is corn is $2.75 to $3 lower than one year ago,” Zylstra, a farmer from Lynville, said in a release. “I just brought my son back to the farming operation and this feels like when I started farming in the early 80s.”

Mark Recker, who farms in northeast Iowa, said, “I started farming in the 90s and I have not seen anything impact me more than ethanol. This isn’t just about farm-ers like me; this is about implement dealers, gas stations, banks, and schools. We are all interconnected in this issue and we need to tell the EPA not to change our cur-rent RFS. It is working.”

Another effort to raise awareness of the issue was an event organized by Governor Branstad and Lt. Gover-nor Kim Reynolds. “Hearing in the Heartland: Support-ing the Renewable Fuels Standard,” was scheduled for Thursday, January 23, at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates in Des Moines.

Clock is ticking on RFS comment period

Earling man’s book details Iowa’s hybrid corn past

by Greg ForbesAn Earling man’s physical dedication and documentation

of Iowa’s stamp on hybrid corn history has been transferred to a 160 page account of what TIME magazine called one of mankind’s greatest achievements of the last 1,000 years.

Steve Kenkel, along with Loretta Sorensen, recently re-leased “Kernels of Corn History”, a documentation of 18 Shelby County hybrid corn growers, vintage corn farming implements and the story of Kenkel’s unique collection.

He first began collecting cloth seed bags, which grew into a set of 40 bags from 18 seed companies that put Shelby County on the national agriculture map.

Those companies, which operated from the 1920s to the 1960s, were the most in any county in the nation in a time where more than 800 hybrid seed companies existed.

Now, Kenkel explained, less than 50 companies remain. He began to make it his mission to keep that advancement

of corn and agriculture history alive and expanded his col-lection to vintage corn planters, corn shellers, tractors and other unique and antique items.

Those items are now displayed in a repurposed machine shed on his farm in rural Earling.

Now referred to as the Hybrid Corn Pioneers Museum, the nearly 5,000 total square foot building stands to remind or teach visitors of Iowa’s place in corn history.

As Kenkel’s collection and museum grew, he amassed more stories and soon realized those stories needed to be recorded.

“I like history and I had gathered so much of it that my family encouraged me to write a book,” he said. “In 1992, TIME magazine listed it (hybrid corn) as one of the greatest feats of the last 1,000 years. That astonished me…but no one had told that story.”

He released the first addition of his book, “The Hybrid Corn Pioneers”, in 2004. The book initially contained the story of the invention of hybrid corn and the 18 companies of Shelby County.

But Sorensen, of Prairie Hearth Publishing in Yankton, South Dakota and a freelance writer for Farm Collector Mag-azine, heard of Kenkel’s dedication to corn history and knew his story needed to be expanded.

“She said, ‘You don’t understand what you have there. That is the only corn items museum in the United States,’” he recalled. “I was disappointment because of what hybrid corn meant to agriculture so I jumped on it.”

Sorensen said she received information in regards to Ken-kel’s corn museum and received permission from the editor of Farm Collector Magazine to travel to Earling and interview him for a story.

At the museum, Sorensen had a chance to view his col-lection of items that dated back to the 1840s and included a planter designed by the inventor of the very first commercial corn planter.

She continued her research and realized the magnitude of the information Kenkel had helped keep alive.

“I uncovered all sorts of interesting information and the

whole evolution of ag equipment,” she said. “I thought that was a great compliment to what Steve had done. He un-earthed all the neat details.”

Kenkel had sent Sorensen a copy of his 2004 book lead-ing up to the first interview and she saw an opportunity to expand the account of corn.

She offered both her experience as a writer and a publisher to release an expanded copy of the book; an offer Kenkel gladly accepted.

Kenkel said he and Sorensen expanded the book to in-clude the story behind his museum as well as the hundreds of unique items in his collection and a two-day expo on the fourth weekend of August dedicated to the history of hybrid corn. During his research, Kenkel explained he was most surprised to find that the success of hybrid corn producers would have been impossible without the strength and sup-port of their families.

“For a long time, producers had big families and it took a lot of work to grow the industry but I think the families are what kept it together and made it work,” he said. “If they didn’t have that labor force or the families around, hybrid corn wouldn’t have worked.”

He added he was also reminded of the physical toll of farming in the eras of his machinery and how that showed an unparalleled dedication to a trade.

“When you look at that book, everything those producers and farmers of those eras did was all hand work,” he said. “When we look at it today…it makes us appreciate what we have.”

Sorensen said the book not only pays tribute to the his-tory of hybrid corn but also provides insight into the state of agriculture today. Primarily as a writer focused on the agriculture industry, Sorensen has a familiarity with mod-ern equipment. But her look back at nearly two centuries of agriculture has helped her understand where farming has

been and the future it may have. “You just kind of think the equipment was always there so

when I started learning details, the people involved, the steps it took to get where we are, I was surprised,” she said. “It (Kenkel’s collection) helped me understand the ag industry better, the roots where we come from and even think about where we could go.”

The book provides a look back through decades of agri-cultural triumph and innovation. While the majority of the content focuses on Iowa’s contribution to the corn industry, Sorensen said she believed readers will connect with the book on a national level.

“Corn is a huge product…in the Midwestern region,” she said. “Although this isn’t a piece of their state’s history, it’s still a piece of history about the industry they’re engaged in.

“This is one element of it or one piece of a puzzle that helps you put the picture together,” she continued. “It gives you a better understanding of the lives those people lived, how that’s influenced farmers today and understand the im-pact it will continue to have.”

Husking through historyPurchasing “Kernels of Corn History”

Kernels of Corn History, produced by Steve Kenkel and Lo-retta Sorensen, documents the advancement of hybrid corn and corn-related machinery.

Kenkel, of Earling, has dedicated years to amassing a col-lection of vintage corn products and released a book based on his findings in 2004.

Sorensen, of Prairie Hearth Publishing, offered to help ex-pand his original copy and elaborate on the work Kenkel has done to keep corn history alive.

The finished product is a 160 page account of the hybrid corn presence of Iowa.

“Kernels of Corn History” is $20 and is available online at www.amazon.com or www.prairiehearthpublishingllc.com, through email at [email protected] or [email protected] or by calling Sorensen at Prairie Hearth Publishing at 605-660-0378.

The book is also available at Farmers Trust and Savings Bank in Earling, Harlan and Woodbine, the Shelby County Chamber office in Harlan or Earling Feed and Grain.

Hybrid Corn Pioneers Corn Expo dates

Every other year on the fourth weekend in August, Steve Kenkel opens his corn implement museum, converted from a machine shed, and his property to hundreds of guests for a celebration of corn.

The event includes a three generation seed corn plot, live husking and shelling demonstrations, tours through his museum and more.

The next event will be August 22 and 23, 2015 at Ken-kel’s farm at 2040 Ironwood Road outside of Earling.

Portsmouth farmer’s legacy to enrich human spirit“Bud” Skalla leaves more than $7 million to area Catholic churches

Edwin “Bud” Skalla did not forget his community and his church.

The lifelong bachelor farmer from Portsmouth left cash and land to Catholic churches in Shelby, Harri-son, Crawford and Pottawattamie counties.

The announcement of the bequest took place Thurs-day, January 9, during a press conference at the Kath-leen Kohorst Law Firm in Harlan. Kohorst represents Skalla’s estate.

Skalla, who died on November 26, 2013, was de-scribed as living frugally throughout his life.

He was born January 7, 1921, to Jacob and Elizabeth Skalla on the family farm near Portsmouth, and during

his nearly 93 years of life, he accumulated more than $2 million in cash assets and 1,100 acres of land in Harrison and Shelby counties.

He spent the last 13 years of his life in a nursing home, and although physically separated from his community, he did not forget it.

After remembering a few friends and relatives in his will, Skalla gave the balance of his estate, in excess of $7 million, to area Catholic churches. The amount the churches will receive depends on the sale price of the farm land.

Catholic churches in Shelby County listed in Skalla’s will are St. Michael’s in Harlan, St. Peter’s in Defiance,

St. Joseph’s in Earling, St. Boniface in Westphalia, St. Mary’s in Portsmouth and St. Mary’s in Panama.

Catholic churches in Harrison County that will ben-efit are St. Patrick’s Church in Missouri Valley, St. Anne’s Church in Logan, St. Patrick’s in Dunlap, Sa-cred Heart in Woodbine and St. Patrick’s in Neola.

St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison and St. Patrick’s in Council Bluffs are also beneficiaries.

Skalla’s home parish, St. Mary’s in Portsmouth, re-ceived a special bequest of a farm valued at nearly $3 million in a recent appraisal.

Skalla’s obituary said he was a hard-working farmer who was totally devoted to his land, that he spent his life living and farming.

He never married but was extremely dedicated to his family, especially his mother, and always saw to it that she was well taken care of until her death in 1984.

The obituary also stated that Skalla was a collector of antiques and small tractors, loved going to farm sales and often came home with John Deere or Case IH equipment.

At Thursday’s news conference, a comment from Bishop Richard Pates, Bishop of Des Moines, was read by the Rev. John Dorton of St. Mary’s of Portsmouth.

The statement said, “The Catholic communities of Shelby and Harrison counties as well as the Diocese of Des Moines are enormously grateful to Edwin “Bud” Skalla for his extraordinarily generous remembrance of the parishes in his will. “Bud” was engaged in the

most noble of professions, farming. “Through his dedicated work he provided nourish-

ment for the human body which fortified countless thousands. Now, in death, through his legacy, he will enrich the human spirit through faith and spiritual development.

“Mr. Skalla’s example is one which challenges all of us. May we be inspired to align our priorities in such a manner “Bud” did and beautifully cooperate with God in contribution to the common good of developing the full human person, body and soul.”

Raymond Chipman, of Harlan, and Clarence Reinig, of Portsmouth, co-executors of Skalla’s estate, said they were honored to be able to benefit the area churches.

“I want to publicly thank Bud Skalla for allowing me to work for him for the last 18 years,” said Chipman.

“The road hasn’t always been smooth, but we were able to work through the rough spots. He was a tre-mendously generous person, as people are now aware. May he be remembered in these parishes for years to come.”

Reinig said, “I have known Bud for many years and he was a very close friend of mine. Bud’s land was an important part of his life. He was a diligent steward of his land, taking great pride to conserve the soil.”

The farm land, other than that given to St. Mary’s in Portsmouth, will be sold by the executors at public auction on February 15 at St. Mary’s Parish Hall in Portsmouth.
