From the Minister

Dear friends, Once more our country is experiencing a time of political uncertainty with the surprise calling of a General Election by the Prime Minister. Just when we thought we were getting a little respite from elections, we find ourselves immersed in political campaigning with the associated endless round of opinion polls. Only two years have passed since the last general election and prior to that we had the Scottish Independence Referendum, and more recently the Referendum on the European Union. If that was not enough, this month we also have the Local elections. It is little wonder that some folks are experiencing election fatigue. The political scene is anything but settled at the moment and who knows what the future will bring with Brexit and another possible Scottish Referendum. What then should be our reaction to all of this political turmoil and uncertainty? For people of faith we have the conviction that God is ultimately in control. In Psalm 47 we read that God is sovereign over the nations, “God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne,” and that God watches over the nations, Psalm 66:7. Such is God’s sovereign power, the nations are incomparably small, and their leaders are answerable to God, for in Isaiah 40:15 we read, “Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.” There will no doubt be many promises made to voters, many claims and counter claims made by politicians and political parties, but we do well to remember that in Proverbs 14:34 we have the key to success for any nation. “Righteousness exalts a nation.” So can I urge you all to pray for our politicians and their various party policies? It cannot be easy trying to navigate your way through the political scene. Please pray for integrity, honesty, and a desire to serve the people. Please also vote and resist the temptation to succumb to voter’s apathy.

Paul encouraged his young church to “….. pray for everyone in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases God our Saviour”.(1 Timothy 2:1) Whatever the outcome over the coming weeks and months, rejoice in the hope that our sovereign God is working His good purposes out. May God bless you and your loved-ones.

“The Land where Lemons Grow” prompted an interesting discussion. Prior to the meeting I thought I had suggested a difficult book. It was

not a favourite but it seemed that everyone who had tackled it learned something. There was a feeling that the author should have re-ordered the chapters. Starting the book with descriptions of plaster casts of lemon species was not the start of a page turner. Our next meeting on 5th May we will be reviewing “The Miniaturist” by Jessie Burton. 7th till 13th August 2017

We would still welcome more volunteers to help take a group or make crafts, etc. Look out for a meeting with organiser, Jenny

Hamill, if you are interested in helping out in any way.

For further information in the meantime, please contact the minister or Glenda Cook.

Before I mention the April meeting of the Kirk Session let me start by saying that the Holy Week services were quite inspiring this year.

The services each night in Stamperland led principally by 3 of their young elders/leaders saw attendances of 30-50 each night, and augmented by Netherlee members particularly on Maundy Thursday when the service was taken by Tom.

Good Friday morning at 7.00 am saw some 32 people from around the district attend the first of the hourly services (arranged by Clarkston Churches Together), in Netherlee when Father Jim Duggan from St Joseph's started the day with a painting depicting Jesus washing the disciples feet. All the other services used a work of art as their theme for Good Friday finishing at 3.00 pm in Carmunnock.

I am biased I know, but the service in Netherlee at 7.30 pm on Good Friday when around 100 people heard a quite spectacular performance of Easter music from our enhanced choir, was very moving, when coupled with the various readings by members from both Churches.

Easter day was a bit dreich at 7.00 am when we met in the Linn Park for a dawn service organised by Steven and Scott from Stamperland when 33 folk of all ages plus 4 dogs held a short services of hymns, readings, prayers and a talk following the theme of the Monday to Friday evening services. Afterwards breakfast in Netherlee was warmly welcomed with our thanks to Barbara and Marjorie for laying it all on.

Finally our family Easter day service was very well attended with 228 folk taking communion which included 23 children. The Easter egg hunt after the service was greatly supported by the children although there are still some eggs turning up in unusual places!!!

Our Stated Annual Meeting on 26 March had a very poor turnout perhaps because it clashed with Mothering Sunday and a later start following the excellent presentation by Helen MacVey on her, Michaela and Rony's recent trip with the “Starchild” project to Uganda. The meeting went well and was not controversial with thanks expressed to the many people within Netherlee who made all that we do possible. The meeting finished

with a vote of thanks to Tom and Catherine for all their support and leadership of the congregation in 2016.

The Annual Inspection of Records by the Presbytery went well with my thanks to the Fabric Committee, the Roll keeper, the PVG co-ordinator and the Minister for all their hard work preparing for it. We are fortunate that in Netherlee we have people with the skills to produce and keep the necessary records. How some other churches who are not so blessed with members possessing these skill sets manage, I do not know. The Nominating Committee's advert for the vacancy appeared in the April edition of Life & Work and whilst I think it was an eye catching advert it has not so far produced any applications. Can I re-iterate my appeal from last month that if you can suggest any names of potential candidates you may have heard when visiting other churches, you provide their names in confidence to Diane Levey or Alistair Gow. In the absence of Tom, I represented the Church at a presentation ceremony by Kirsten Oswald our MP of an Early Day Motion Certificate commemorating the 80 years of service to the Community by the 278th Glasgow Company The Boys' Brigade and to their leaders over that period. The certificate once framed will be hung in the Welcome Hall. Mrs Oswald spoke very well to the boys and willingly answered all their questions in a non political way. The Session met on Tuesday 11 April and covered off the following items of business:-

Preparations for the Open Evening on 26 April.

The retiring offering at the June Communion will go to our Missionary partners in Malta.

The Communion Roll at 11 April stood at 606.The Finance Convener reported we were running at a deficit at the end of February which was a disappointing start to the year. A careful watch will need to be kept on the General Fund. The Committee were also authorised to look into available grants for capital projects like the Halls roofs.

The Fabric Convener reported on the following ongoing matters:- The Main Sanctuary Lighting The dampness above the Pulpit

Page 7: ife MAY 2017 - Netherlee · 2017-05-05 · Summer Services begin -Theme: Journeys in the ible Sunday 11th 9.30 am Morning Worship (Part 1) - Family Time 10.00 am Tea/offee 10.30 am

The structure of the South Wall and sundry other matters including outstanding snagging

issues from the Halls Project. On Wider Mission the Moderator advised that Eric and Gillian Mailler

would be home on leave at the end of April when we looked forward to receiving an update from them about Netherlee Cottage and St Andrews Church.

The Share Group had obtained 50 copies of a new booklet entitled

Daily Devotional Readings written by Canon John Young and produced by York Courses, to cover the 7 weeks from Easter to Pentecost (Whit Sunday), which the Moderator recommended to the Session and which he would intimate to the Congregation. Copies were available from Sheena Wurthmann at a cost of £2.25.

The Clerk dealt with sundry items of correspondence and the

Moderator read out to the Session a letter he had received from David McGowan resigning as Captain of the 278th Glasgow Company The Boys' Brigade from the end of this session. David had been Captain for 6 years and had been an outstanding holder of that post encouraging the boys to compete in District and Battalion events and seeing to it that many of the boys gained their Queen's Badge and went on to become young officers who had then completed their Officers' Basic Training. He therefore left the Company in good shape and was available to help his successor in any way he could. The Session received this news with sadness and gratitude to David for his work with the Company and tasked the Moderator and Clerk to discuss finding a replacement with David.

Finally we were reminded by Vicky Anderson that Christian Aid Week starts on Sunday 14 May. More helpers are needed and she appealed to the Session to assist and would also make an appeal to the congregation.

Journeys in the Bible and with the congregation

Following the popularity of our “Bag” theme last summer, we decided to continue this but with a slightly different twist. We have folding lightweight shopping bags that can fit into a pocket or handbag. The bags have the same logo as last year, “I will be with you wherever you go.” We also have pens with the same logo. As before, the congregation is encouraged to take a bag and pen on their travels this summer and take a picture of them at a favourite place or famous site. Pictures should be sent to the church for display during worship to: [email protected] The bags have the quotation of scripture, as a reminder of the promise of Jesus, but also as a reminder of the church fellowship and the fun thought that the bag or pen is with you. We hope you will enjoy using the bag and perhaps you may find yourself having interesting conversations from curious onlookers. The bags should be available for sale from the beginning of May at a cost of £2.50 which includes a free pen - a bag for your journey and a pen to write your postcard! You may wish to continue to use last year’s jute bag. That is perfectly OK and all the more fun to see where these bags get to! TN & Worship Committee

Christian Aid Week 2017 This falls on week beginning Sunday 14th May. There has been a new directive from Christian Aid which states if you have a "no cold calling" sticker on your door the collector is not permitted to knock your door......they can leave an envelope with instructions on how to donate. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but please remember this is not either our doing or anything to do with the collections but a directive from Christian Aid as a direct response to abuse that some collectors have had to endure. Please be courteous to collectors if they come to your door. It is not an easy task. If anyone would like to offer their services as a collector please speak to any of the team Thank you Marjorie, Walter, Vicky

3rd Netherlee Brownies Continuing on the theme of spring we leapt into a lively games night. Without my score keeper, Tawny Owl, Vivienne Mair who was mysteriously unavailable that very loud evening, armed with a clip board and a whistle,

we split the group into their packs. From a Leaders viewpoint this is always amusing as the older Brownies work out, depending on the game, whether they should field their youngest or oldest Brownie first, who will be strong enough, who will not be distracted, they employ tactics that would warm the cockles of José Mourinho’s

heart. Once that is decided, they look round to see who has only five in their team that evening instead of six, who has the youngest / oldest Brownies, who has heely shoes on and therefore will not be able to run as fast ….and then, they are not only ready for the games, they are ready for the ‘competition to begin’. First up it was the sack race, which they were all geared up for and set off like a postman being chased by a dog. Then it was put-the-youngest-Brownie-on-the-skate board and push her along as fast as possible, this proved to be a great hit and we had variations of this theme including gathering as many coloured balls as possible. On this evening we had a full house of thirty Brownies so the teams were all even and it turned out to be a very competitive. The following week it was gift making for Mother’s day, so as the craft was a more sedate affair we could have more boisterous activities around it so we had a game of ‘Performance Splat’. Splat is when the Brownies stand in a circle, one is pointed to and Brownies on both sides have to ‘fire’ at each other and whoever does it first is the winner and the other one sits down, as more people sit down you have to work out who your actual opponent is as well as remain quick on the draw. Performance Splat is when the two Brownies either side of the one that has been ‘splatted’ (no, it’s not a word let alone an adjective) have to quickly think of something to do to entertain the rest of the pack, and the one who performs the best, decided by the pack, remains in the game. Well, the ‘shy’ Brownies sure gave the others something to think about and I do not know where all this

Page 13: ife MAY 2017 - Netherlee · 2017-05-05 · Summer Services begin -Theme: Journeys in the ible Sunday 11th 9.30 am Morning Worship (Part 1) - Family Time 10.00 am Tea/offee 10.30 am

13

talent came from but we had opera singing, tap dancing, break dancing, pop songs, cartwheels and juggling. It was super and very entertaining, this is rapidly going to become a popular game. The week finished with thinking about other ways to show our appreciation for our mothers, grans, carers et al, other than the usual ‘tidy up my room’ which I never believe is actually ever done. We came up with, put our iPad down when asked and come to the dinner table when asked first time. We continue with our spring badge activities next month with walks and outdoor fun. " Summer Sun-day Services"

Sad to say that my appeal in the April LINK has not produced any volunteers to help out at these services. It is not too late to offer to help. I am naturally disappointed, but I am optimistic that when I approach individual families I will get a positive response.

Watch out for me contacting YOU.

278 Company Section- The Boys ‘Brigade

I am delighted to report that all five of our Queen’s Men successfully completed their hard work by attending the Queen’s Men weekend of events at Auchengillan Outdoor Centre. I am sure that you would like to join me in offering our congratulations to these young men for their efforts in becoming the most recent Queen’s Men of the 278. Along with their families, they will be invited to attend the Queen's Badge Ceremony on 1 June 2017 in Glasgow City Chambers, where they will be presented with their certificates. Before the Easter Break, we had a visit from the local Member of Parliament, Kirsten Oswald. Kirsten recently moved an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons recognising the work of the volunteers in the 278 over the last eighty years. We invited Kirsten to come along to present us with the certificate and discuss her work as an MP. We thanked her for taking the time to raise the motion and answer so many interesting questions from the boys and officers. We hope that we can display the certificate in the Welcome Hall, subject to Kirk Session approval, for everyone to see. On our return after the Easter break we were delighted to welcome Mr Gus McKay from the Lodging House Mission, to give a brief presentation to the boys on his work as Chaplain. Gus gave us an insight into the life of the service users and the type of support LHM can offer them. Our Queen’s men have spent several weeks working with Gus over the past year and have seen first-hand the excellent work carried out by the staff and volunteers. We were delighted to donate our Bible Class offerings, totalling £375, to Gus on the night. The Company, Junior and Anchor boys attended in good numbers the parade of uniformed organisations on Sunday 23 April. Thankfully, the weather held fair as we marched past the church at the end of the service showing the people of Netherlee the commitment of the young people and their organisations. We now head towards the end of another busy year as we prepare for the annual BB Display, which will be held on the 19 May 2017. A special mention to our Junior Section boys who all participated in the Battalion Junior Section Athletics and won two gold, one silver and two bronze medals between them. Thanks to Caroline Watson-Sweeney, Alistair Haw and Christine McGowan for organising and supervising the boys on the night at the Emirates arena.

Once again a big thanks to you, the friends and congregation of the 278 Company for your continued support and encouragement; it is always very much appreciated. Many blessings. David McGowan Captain

Anchor Boys

The Anchor Boys returned to action after a three week Easter lay off on Sunday 23rd for the service & parade for uniformed organisations. It was great to have 9 of our 13 boys in attendance, with a certain Miss Z Haw (attending for childcare purposes...) marching alongside the boys and thus, arguably, taking us into double figures. The Anchors were great throughout and did the church and Glasgow 278 proud.

By the time of going to print the boys will have returned to Monday night action too with some tennis coaching in the hall courtesy of Clarkston Tennis Club. With the evening light having returned we hope to follow this up with a trip or two to the park, should weather permit, before breaking up for summer at the beginning of June.

You may have spotted our friends in the Scouts saying in the national media that they have the largest waiting list in their history. In response our CEO, Bill Stevenson, encouraged people not to forget about the Boys' Brigade, the world's first uniformed organisation for children and the movement from which the Scouts stemmed. On which note, seeing as you ask, we don't currently have a waiting list and my contact details - and Glasgow 278's Twitter details - can be found below for anyone wishing to follow in the footsteps of Sir Alex Ferguson, Kenny Dalglish & David Tennant as members of the Boys' Brigade. Approaches from boys entering P1 in August especially welcome!

The AGM and conference of Eco-Congregation Scotland took place on Saturday 22nd April. The key note speaker was Alastair McIntosh. The title of his talk was “Poacher’s Pilgrimage”. Alastair grew up on the Isle of Lewis as a Free Presbyterian. He lives in Govan, works with young people building traditional wooden boats, writing and speaking. He is now a Quaker. The Pilgrimage that Alastair took was from Rodel,

southerly point of Harris to the Butt of Lewis. It took him 12 days to make this journey following the chapels, shielings and wells that are dotted along this route. He went alone using a map and compass to navigate. Why is it a poacher’s pilgrimage? He took his fishing rod with him. In island culture pilgrimage is frowned on but poaching is acceptable. The locals could see the point of a walk that included some fishing! Alastair found that as he travelled he found himself searching for the stories of the landscape. There was one story about three floods. The first was the flood of creation, the second was the flood of Noah and the Ark, the third is to come! In the mountains of Harris there are two peaks with a v-shape between them where the local story is that the Ark got stranded in that cleft. Some animals escaped there like the blue mountain hare but the tide came in and floated the Ark and Noah sailed off again. By day 8 he had reached Callanish and the Standing Stones. When he was washing his hands he looked in the mirror and this wild man looked back. He took a selfie and he did look wild! The journey had had an impact on him. Not just physically but mentally and spiritually the pilgrimage was working on him. These impacts are commonly reported by those who follow pilgrim routes. At the General Assembly this month Church and Society Council has two deliverances about Pilgrimage. Forty years ago a few thousand people walked or cycled the Camino de Santiago. Now about a quarter of a million travel annually. In Scotland pilgrim routes like St. Cuthbert’s Way and the route from Whithorn to Paisley are popular routes for walkers and cyclists. The reformed churches were hostile to pilgrimage but it is time for a reassessment. Congregations along the pilgrim routes report that they have many more visitors. There are opportunities for hospitality

as well as supporting the spiritual experiences of the pilgrims. It will be interesting to follow the discussion at the General Assembly and to follow the impact of the deliverances. Alastair found the walk in dreadful weather (hence the wild man appearance) had a healing impact on his mind and body. Should we look for a route locally? Sheena Wurthmann

Clarkston & District Christian Aid Committee

Art Exhibition & Sale

Many weeks have passed since the event which has given the Committee time to 'round up' the finances and we are really delighted to report that Christian Aid will receive £6,758.50. Of the 321 works on show we sold 77 paintings. We take 33% of their sales. Along with the paintings sold we had various stalls, two paintings which were raffled and an all day tearoom (with home baking).

The success of the event is due to the willingness of many volunteers especially from our own Church as the staging of the event begins on the Friday morning and ends with our team assisting with the dismantling at the close of the exhibition. We send our thanks to ALL our volunteers and hope they enjoyed their day and would like to assist in 2018 - when the 38th Art Exhibition will take place in Carmichael Hall on Saturday 10 March.

The members of SHARE are using the Daily Devotional Readings from Easter to Pentecost as source material for this season. As we read we have become aware that Easter and the events of the crucifixion and resurrection seem to be over too quickly. Now that we are doing the readings we are taking the time to follow the disciples as they shift from scared individuals to the missionaries for Christ. One of the readings highlighted the role of women in the first Easter. If the events had been written by the culture of the time the women would not have been included. However the history of the Christian church

has been punctuated by women from the women at the cross to the saints and pioneers like Elizabeth Fry, the Pankhursts and Cicely Saunders. If you would like to use these readings we have spare copies. Just contact me! Sheena Wurthmann
