Interfraternity Council Fall 2014

Welcome HSU Student!

My name is Dillon Maxwell. I am a Senior Aviation Man-

agement student from Arkadelphia, AR. I am currently

this years IFC president, All Greek President, and the

Greek Man of the year.

Before I tell you about the two fraternities that you can

find here, I want to congratulate you on your decision to

come to Henderson State University. From the Educa-

tion you will receive to the Experiences you will make,

this is truly a spectacular place.

I personally chose to Go Greek and have never once

regretted it. I have met people who have become some

of my greatest friends, and by being involved I made con-

nections that will help me start a career after I leave this

great university. I hope you make the decision, whatever

your interests may be, to get involved and make the most of your time here.

Every fraternity consists of some of the brightest and strongest leaders in the world. We consid-

er ourselves elite and value loyalty, brotherhood, and academics above anything else.

If your interests include joining a fraternity, Henderson offers you 2 choices. Both are very active

in the University as well as the community of Arkadelphia. From Academics to Philanthropy, you

will work hard, make lifelong friends, and continue traditions that have been around since the

beginning of Greek life here at Henderson. Have you ever heard of Drumbeat? If not you will

soon, both fraternities will be involved in keeping this 49 year old tradition alive during home-

coming week. The two organizations are Phi Lambda Chi and Kappa Sigma. Both Fraternities get

along and work together to make life great here at Henderson State. Both will help you make the

most of the next few years.

Visit us during recruitment week to find out more specific details about both fraternities. Find out

what each has to offer and what role you could have by joining. Do not be shy or nervous, re-

member that we were once in your shoes, and above anything else have fun!

If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to ask. I am here to help you make the

best decision for you whether it be greek life or something else.

Dear Henderson Student;

Henderson has enjoyed a rich tradition of Greek

Life on campus. From its beginning, the fraternity/

sorority community has continued to grow in size

while still providing each member with a high-

quality experience.

At Henderson we are proud of our Greek com-

munity, which fosters the development of leader-

ship skills and enhances members’ personal lives.

Our Greek Organizations always strive for the

best!

As you start to settle in and develop interests, you

will have many opportunities to choose from.

There are more than ninety student organizations

registered with the Student Leadership Center. Among these Ninety nine opportunities to get

involved at Henderson, I would like to invite you to consider a fraternity or sorority during your

time with us.

Being a member of a Greek organizations will give you opportunities to assume different leader-

ship roles, from programming and recruiting to money management. Within these Greek Organi-

zations you will not only make friendships that last a lifetime, but also learn how to work with

many diverse people toward a common goal—the growth and management of the Greek chap-

ters at Henderson State University.

I believe you'll find that involvement in a Greek organization will help foster personal develop-

ment unlike any other campus organization. We have two of the best fraternities in the country,

Phi lambda Chi & Kappa Sigma. Their members hold the highest GPAs among our Greek chapters

as well as are very involved with our Campus and Arkadelphia community.

Mission

The Mission of the Office of Greek Life is to provide Henderson Fraternities

and sororities with education-al programs, leadership opportunities and ser-

vices that create, promote and foster a diverse and inclusive community.

Core Values

Leadership

Members of the Greek community at Henderson will demonstrate values-

based Leadership as a key to success in life. Fraternity & Sorority Life offers

unmatched opportunities to develop the leadership skills necessary to be

successful in college and in life beyond graduation.

Scholarship

Fraternity men and sorority women strive for academic excellence at Hen-

derson State University. Scholarship is a commitment to intellectual growth

and development. Fraternity and sorority members generally out-perform

their non-Greek peers in the classroom, and tend to have a higher gradua-

tion rate.

Community Service and Philanthropy

Each fraternity and sorority at Henderson State University has a commit-

ment to service as one of its core principles. They each have their own re-

spective philanthropies that they support through fundraisers and numerous

events throughout the year. Members of fraternities and sororities serve

others before themselves.

Brotherhood/Sisterhood

This is the foundation upon which all Greek organizations at Henderson

State University are built. Most students will join a Greek organization be-

cause they feel a strong sense of belonging that comes from being a member

of a smaller community.

Relax! Rush at Henderson is very informal.

Ask each fraternity what is expected of associate members in terms of

grades, time, and commitment. Meet some of the current associate mem-

bers and ask them questions about membership.

Find out the financial costs; this could play a role in your decision. How-

ever, don’t let costs be the deciding factor. The benefits of fraternities go

way beyond financial costs.

Remember that you are a guest at each fraternity and act accordingly. Try

to meet as many members as possible in the time you are visiting with

them. This will give you a better idea about the members of the chapter.

Look at both fraternities before making your decision. There are

outstanding individuals in each chapter.

Ask many questions. Fraternity members are eager to help you in your deci-

sion and will be glad to answer any questions you may have.


Remember that the rush process is one of mutual selection by both you and

the fraternity. Find the chapter where you feel comfortable, but don’t

be discouraged if you do not receive a bid from them. The fraternity is mak-

ing the same kind of decisions you are, so look at all of your options and

decide which chapter that asked you to join is best for you.

Be confident in yourself. A firm handshake is vital to a good impression.

When you are introduced to someone, repeat his name. However, don’t

feel you have to remember everyone’s name. The fraternity men will realize

that you are meeting a large number of people. If you are unsure of

someone’s name, ask him. Also, never hesitate to introduce yourself.

Don’t be pressured into a decision.

There are certain questions you should avoid during rush, such as, “What

do you think about another chapter?”, or “Can you tell me what my chances

are of getting into your chapter?”
