Hints for effective Reading Of ALL Textbooks

1. Scan the section of book

related to the topic

2. Read over the section in the book

related to topic that we are on

3. Look up vocabulary words

as they are used in the chapter

IFyou use the glossary

you limit your ability to understand

ASthere are key details [such as pictures] glossary will omit due to lack of space.

4. write a good definition

in your own words.

Definition should answer [5 w’s]1. WHO is the person? or

2. WHAT is the object [if not a person]?3. WHERE did this occur?

4. WHEN did this take place? [DATE] and most importantly

5. WHY is this important to the study of this topic?

5. Worksheets based on reading, charts, maps, etc.

If you want to graduate with a diploma, not a certificate of attendance,

you will need to pass a graduation and /or EOCT test

In writing, science, math, SS, English

With the exception of the writing test, the tests will feature reading sections with

questions based on the reading,charts and graphs –with questions based on the

charts and graphs,maps—with questions based on the maps, and multiple choice questions based on key

concepts of the academic discipline.

• It does not matter, if we have given you a good plan, and you decide not to use the tools in your toolbox.

• We can give you hints at how to best read a text, you will need to accomplish that.

• We can tell you vocabulary is important, but , if you never endeavor to learn vocabulary, we can not learn it for you.

• We will walk alongside of you and encourage you,• BUT we can not walk for you.
