Phil Collins Goes CasualAtlantic recording artist Phil Collins is on release with No Jacket Required,his 3rd solo LP. One More Night has been taken as the first single. Collins,a member of Atlantic recording act Genesis since 1970, garnered solorenown in Canada with his 2 previous efforts - Face Value and Hello, IMust Be Going. In addition to his duties as drummer/vocalist with Genesis,Collins has produced several major LPs and recorded with acts such asBrian Eno and Robert Plant.Renowned for over a decade internationallyas a crack drummer and crucial element in thesuccess of Genesis, Phil Collins has alsofashioned a reputation for himself as a pro-ducer for artists ranging from John Martynto Eric Clapton.

Collins' recent collaboration with EarthWind & Fire's Philip Bailey produced a Top30 LP - Chinese Wall - and a No. 1 single,Easy Lover. He played drums and sang onthe LP in addition to producing it.

Collins first appeared as a member of Genesison 1971's Nursery Cryme, an LP that includ-ed the now classic The Musical Box. Over thenext 4 years, Genesis firmed their reputationas one of the most skilled and instrumentallypotent progressive -rock bands of the '70s.While some critics assailed the band's veiledpretentiousness and frequently elliptic lyrics,many were won over by the textural,keyboard -dominated sound of LPs like Sell-ing England By The Pound and The LambLies Down On Broadway.

There were those who speculated that thedeparture of vocalist Peter Gabriel in 1975amounted to the end for Genesis, but in theintervening decade Collins has given the lie tosuch considerations - taking the band fromits position as an occasionally overblownpomp -rock spectacle (circa Gabriel) to theslick, tight, '80s -pop outfit that is Genesis to-day.

By the 1981 release of his debut solo LP,Face Value, Collins had recorded with BrandX - something of a recreational project -and done session work with com-poser/producer Brian Eno and British rocklegends Thin Lizzy.

Face Value, an LP that sold in excess of400,000 copies in Canada yielded 2 hit singles- I Missed Again and In The Air Tonight. IMissed Again, a Top 10 single, was as brassy(courtesy the Phoenix Horns) and uptempoas In The Air Tonight was ominous andmoody; the latter featured a by -now -famousimprimatur - Collins' booming drum fillssurrounding a frequently syncopatedbackbeat. Face Value went to No. 1 in Mayof 1981.

Hello, I Must Be Going - the second Col-lins solo LP - sold less than Face Value, butsustained Collins' profile as a solo writer andperformer of substance. The LP, released in1982, provided 3 singles - You Can't Hurry

Love, popularized by The Supremes, I Don'tCare Anymore, and I Cannot Believe It'sTrue.

1982 also witnessed the first Collins pro-duction projects - John Martyn's GloriousFool and Frida's Something's Going On.

Collins accepted Robert Plant's offer tojoin his debut tour of North America in 1983.Critics subsequently noted Collins as in-strumental in the success of Plant's shows.

Collins was busy behind the board onceagain in 1984, producing LPs for Adam Ant(Strip) and Bailey. 1984 was also noteworthyfor the No. 1 status accorded Against AllOdds (Take A Look At Me Now), a Collinsvocal from the film Against All Odds.

Eric Clapton's new LP, Behind The Sun,lists Collins as one of the record's producers.He should hit North America soon to tourbehind No Jacket Required, however noCanadian dates have been firmed as of yet.The new LP shipped over platinum inCanada, and presumably will replicate Col-lins' previous successes at retail and radiogiven his high profile at present. Agency expands roster The Agency, Toronto's largest booking agen-

cy, has announced the signing 'of the following acts for exclusive agency representation:

Triumph, Platinum Blonde, M+M, The Parachute Club, David Wilcox, Strange Ad-

vance, Gowan, Luba, Honeymoon Suite, B.T.O., Michael Damian, Jack Green, and

Helix. Vancouver -based S.L. Feldman and

Associates has exclusive booking rights to the entire The Agency roster, which will now include the artists listed above.

Campus media session for LaMarche LP A&M Records held a "campus media only"

reception Feb. 19 at their Toronto offices in order to premiere the new LP from Jim

LaMarche, Searching For The Sunrise. The video for the LP's first single, Innocent Little Boys Cry, was also premiered. The LP ships

to radio Mar. 11. Thirty-one student reps attended, from

Toronto -area colleges such as Seneca, Humber, and Scarborough (UofT), as well as

from centres outside Toronto - University of Guelph, Western (London), and Universi- ty of Waterloo. A&M officials expressed

regret that nobody representing Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto attended

the session. Toronto retail representation came from Record Peddler, Star Records,

and A&A's downtown location. LaMarche's video for Innocent Little Boys

Cry, filmed last November in Woodstock, Ont., was directed by Patricia Sims and produced by Jamie Boyd - noted for his critical-

ly acclaimed documentary, Falasha: Exile of the Black Jews.

The video features LaMarche's wife, as well as segments from the Yugoslavian film

Cruel Diagonals.

Local musicians aid drought relief

A benefit concert featuring The Uncle Fatback Band will be held Mar. 24 at Raven's in Mississauga, just west of

Toronto. The intent is to raise money to support The Canadian Save The

Children Fund's programs in drought stricken countries in Africa. The lineup

of guest artists firmed at press time is: Liberty Silver, Tony Flaim, Jo -Ann Brooks & Jeff Jones, Smokey Burke, Kenny Neal, Liz Tilden, Eugene Smith, Diane Brooks, B.J. Reed, Heather Katz,

Danny Middlebrook, Danny "B", and Nancy Simmons.

Cook & Tyson team for Porky's III soundtrack

Toronto songwriters B.J. Cook and David Tyson will have their composition, Has

Heaven Had A Change Of Heart, included in the original soundtrack from Porky's

Revenge, the third sequel to the film series following Porky's I and II. The track was produced by Tyson at ZaZa Sound in Toron-

to. Cook is well known in Canadian music circles as both a songwriter and background

vocalist for session work. Tyson, also a recognized songwriter has written material

for several name Canadian acts and has also produced sessions. These include The Ar-

rows, and most recently Belinda Metz. He has also co -wrote with Eddy Schwartz. The

Cook/Tyson composition is represented by ATV Music.

The soundtrack, which features guitarist Dave Edmunds and his friends, has been

scheduled for a late March release by CBS. Edmunds' friends include Robert Plant and

Phil Collins, under the guise of The Crawling Kingsnakes, as well as Carl Perkins, Jeff

Beck, The Stray Cats, Willie Nelson, George Harrison, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Ex-Beatle George Harrison performs his version of a previously -unreleased Bob Dylan

composition, I Don't Want To Do It. The Fabulous Thunderbirds cover the Lloyd Price

classic Stagger Lee, and Willie Nelson performs Elvis Presley's Love Me Tender.

Gold and platinum to John Waite for his single, Missing You, and LP, No Brakes,

respectively, during his visit to Toronto. Capitol -EMI President Dave Evans makes

the presentation at company's office.

Kornelsen to Capitol Nat'l Promo Manager

Capitol -EMI President J.D. Evans has of- ficially announced Olie Kornelsen's appoint-

ment to the position of National Promotion Manager.

Kornelsen joined Capitol in 1976, starting

as Regional Promotion Rep for the Alber- ta/Saskatchewan area. In 1980 he moved to

the Toronto Branch (Ont. Promotion), and in 1982 was appointed Artist Relations

Manager -a position he held until this ap- pointment.

Kornelsen's new position will make him responsible for .the activities of the Capitol promotion team across Canada, as well as the

Press and Publicity functions.

Heavy metal losing ground???Those labels, overflowing with heavy metalacts, could be heading for trouble. The U.S.would appear to be hell bent on continuingtheir softening of the market and they arenow getting a hand from the all powerfulMTV music channel. Recording artists needmore than radio play today to break intothe market - they need video, and if MTV,and the other music channels are going to atight and softer playlist . . . . there couldbe trouble for the nonconformists.

Out in the cold!!!Seems that one of the Toronto dailies' nosefor news types was left standing out in thecold when the megastar session for theEthiopian relief fund was going on. Insidersfelt it was better to have him outside in thecold than inside trying to cause anotherracial incident!!!

Nothing official but f!!I hear that justice was summarily dealtwith this past week when a a fine of $1,000.was handed down is an industry individualwho was found guilty of "passing off". Hisemployee was also found guilty and given asuspended sentence with an absolute dis-charge. That's 2 down, but whatever hap-pened to that charge involving the high flier?

Verydignified, except for the hootin' and holler -in' from the peanut gallery. They shouldrethink the value of all that distraction. Onthe other hand, the Academy Awards maybe missing something when they don'thave all that fan response.

Majors dropping Cancon acts???There are strong rumours that one major istaking a second look at its Cancon roster,and is considering "trimming the fat".Breaking a Cancon act today is much moreexpensive and hazardous than it was, acouple of years ago, and if you can't get thenod from the parent/sister company in theU.S., the difficulties are compounded.Those who are doing well with Canconhave been careful not to overload theirroster. Marketing strategy and eventualsuccess is much better served with a leanerroster.

David Foster shines at GrammysUp until just this year, not too many knewwho David. Foster was, a sad commentaryfor the Canadian recording industry. Thisyear, Foster, who was born in Victoria,B.C. and now lives in Vancouver, pickedup 2 Grammys: as Producer of The Year,for producing Chicago, which he tied withLionel Richie, and for best instrumentalarrangement, accompanying vocals for Chi-cago's Hard Habit To Break. Did you knowthat Foster won a Grammy several years agofor Earth, Wind & Fire's hit, After The LoveIs Gone. This song, by the way was writtenabout his breakup with his first wife B.J.Cook, who now lives in Toronto, and isperhaps Foster's biggest booster.

Governmentauthorities apparently cancelled Bruce Cock -burn's date at the Festival of Political Songsin Sokolow one day before he was schedul-ed to appear. The reason - Bruce wears anearring. Because it's a political issue thatdeals with a communist country, the U.S.music industry and media are reportedlytaking the incident seriously. However,here in Toronto, True North, Bruce's label,shrugged off the incident as just an un-fortunate development. Bruce is currentlymaking waves with his protest single, If IHad A Rocket Launcher.

THE FIRM - RockThe Firm - Atlantic - 78-12391-QThis collaboration between guitar heroJimmy Page and vocalist Paul Rodgerswhile having a few soft spots, generally re-affirms the reputations of both as forma-tive rock influences of the '60s and '70s.With the assistance of Chris Slade (drums),and Tony Franklin (bass, synthesizer), theduo have assembled 8 original tracks and theMann/Weil/Spector classic You've Lost ThatLovin' Feeling. Radioactive, currently shoot-ing up playlists, has been taken as the firstsingle, but there are others to note here:Closer, with its Zeppelinesque guitar riffand clipped horn bursts, and Rodgers'Money Can't Buy - very reminiscent of hisbetter work with Bad Company.

Overall, a tentative but sincere debutthat presumably signals the active returnof both the band's principals to a businessbereft of them for far too long.

Produced by Page and Rodgers at TheSol Studios, Berkshire, England. Terrificjacket art work, but word of mouth willsell this one.

B.W. Pawley, who recently released his debut Globe single, Ten Good Years, is gaining

steadily on major and secondary country markets. The B.W. Pawley Road Show, featuring Robin, and Coyote, have been tour-

ing Ontario and are heading out on a 11/2

month tour of the Maritimes, after which they will be heading west for a couple of

months. Pawley also has a duet with Robin, titled Outrun The Rain, which is now being

readied for shipping. This single, along with Pawley's solo, is included on the latter's new

LP, Lovin', Livin', and Drinkin'. The LP also includes a solo track by Robin, Some

People Belong Together, which will also be released shortly. The Pawley album was pro-

duced by John Stewart at The Grange.

New release for Laura Vinson The latest Royalty single from Laura Vinson

& Redwyng is titled Alberta Crude. The plug side was written by the team of Vinson and

Harrison, while the flip, You Give Me The Strength, is a Vinson original.

Nashville nod to Baker & Eastman Carroll Baker and Eddie Eastman will give a special performance for the industry

delegates on hand at the Nashville Palace. (Mar. 7). The performance will follow the

welcoming reception afforded the delegates to the Music Industry Professional Seminar.

The special promotion was coordinated by Ed Keely, President of Artisan Records.

Fjellgaard launches project Gary Fjellgaard, who releases on his own Slim Creek label, is currently putting the

finishing touches on his new album project. Riding On The Wind has been taken as the

first single. Born in Rose Valley, Saskat- chewan, Fjellgaard is the son of a Norwegian

immigrant. He is living on Gabriola Island, B.C. Fjellgaard will be touring with

the Ronnie Prophet Road Show which kicks off at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto (Mar. 20).

M.A.C.A Awards show set for March 10

The 9th Annual Manitoba Association of

Country Arts (M.A.C.A.) Dinner and Awards Show will take place at Winnipeg's Westin Hotel (Mar. 10). This year will be the

introduction of an all new show concept. This will include the presentation of awards in 12

different categories by 21 presenters, slides, videos with approximately 30 comments, 7

performing acts, 4 8 -ft. screens for better viewing, and a show that will last about an

hour and 45 minutes.

M.A.C.A. consists of five members of a Board of Directors, whose responsibility it is

to put on the awards night to honour the best in Manitoba's Country Music Industry. The

entertainers have their own Manitoba Assocation of Country Entertainment (M.A.C.E.), whose members vote on the win-

ners in each category, with the exception of 2:

Most Popular Band Of The Year, and The Golden Award. The former is a fan vote,

while the latter is one arrived at by a M.A.C.A. Board of Directors vote and is presented to one who has contributed their

talents to the Manitoba Country Music industry over the past years. This award would

be compared to a Hall of Fame accolade.

CKKR ceases to existThe parent company of Gooselake Broad-casting, Triad Communications sends newsthat as of Mar. 1st. 1985, "CKKR will cease toexist". Triad President Wax Williams saidthat "after programming a country musicformat for the past 18 years, CKKR will bereplaced by CJYM AM 133." The newstation will continue to be operated byGooselake Broadcasting. CJYM has adopteda Music Of Your Life format, and will con-tinue to employ much of the same personnel.

The money was sentthrough the Presbyterian World Service andDevelopment Fund because its administrativecosts are not paid by the donations (mostlythrough government grants). Dahlquist is the perfect Mame forCanadian audiences. She translates the roleto the setting of a dinner theatre with agreat deal of understanding. Although thewhole production would have benefittedfrom more extreme fashions for the fabu-lous Mame, in dinner theatre cost is alwaysa factor. What might have helped Mame wasa constant change of wigs and hairstyles andcolours as she goes through her variousperiods. On a small stage, this would makethe changes more definite.

Three youngsters take turn playingPatrick as a boy. Patrick, as a young man,is handled well by Brian Hill, who showsgreat promise as a singer and dancer. PamHyatt is an excellent Vera Charles andPeggy Mahon steals the show in the AgnesGooch part, which is designed to stealthe show.

Luba goes gold with Secrets And Sins

Secrets And Sins, the debut LP from Capitol recording act Luba, has been certified gold.

The designation is for Canadian sales in ex-

cess of 50,000 units. The LP's first single, Let It Go, has also gone gold.

Fronted by singer Luba Kowalchyk, the Montreal -based band recently completed a

cross -Canada tour with A&M recording artist Bryan Adams. As support, Luba and her band garnered positive critical acclaim as well

as encouraging responses from partisan audiences.

The second single from the Secrets And Sins LP, Storm Before The Calm, is inching into the RPM Top 50 after 9 weeks of charting. Secrets And Sins continues its inex-

orable climb up the RPM 100 after 30 weeks of charting.

Big Country cancel North American tour

Vertigo recording act Big Country have cancelled their imminent North American

tour citing the need following "a very successful, hectic 2 years" for "a lengthy break

with no 'group' activity whatsoever." Prior to recording their 3rd LP in late sum-

mer, the band will quite likely release a single. Meanwhile, they continue work on the

"Restless Natives" soundtrack, with drummer Mark Brzezicki and bassist Tony Butler also working on Pete Townshend's latest project.
