The readings call us to help those who are doing wrong things to change their ways and that if we don't, we are just as responsible, maybe more, if we do not. These are tough warnings, but important ones to hear if we are to respond to the love of God as St. Paul tells us in today's second reading. Yet each day I am confronted by people who have clearly hardened their hearts to God and the ramifications are painful to watch. I do not often listen to the radio and when I do, I am usually listening to old time radio shows on the classic station on satellite radio. But recently I was listening to a sports radio show and was surprised yet again when I heard the host talk about how he did not care if his favorite college team was cheating as long as they won. Caller after caller echoed this view with no shame, even when confronted by a possible punishment in the future, that would not matter as long as the team won now! Another station had a conversation about how the off field problems of athletes should not be reflected by on field punishments, even if the person did assault his wife. These punishments were influencing the outcome of games and that was not fair to the fans. This is why I don't listen to the radio anymore. How hard have our hearts become with sin when we can condone cheating or crime solely for the sake of our team winning? How hard have our hearts become when we can support evil for the sake of my personal gain? That attitude is diametrically opposed to what we hear in today's first reading. Instead of speaking out against it, we herald evil and wrong doing because, though I am not involved and so I am not responsible, if I can benefit from it, who cares? God cares. This attitude of "looking the other way" has lead us down a path of great moral peril. When we do not speak out against evil and injustice, evil and injustice becomes the norm and goodness and justice are soon forgotten. When we accept a level of corruption from public officials, we are accepting corruption from every person in society (as long of course that it does not negatively impact me). When we accept bad and criminal behavior from those in the public arena, we are instilling in our children an attitude which tells them everything is acceptable if you are a celebrity or a talented athlete. Remember when a person's word was their bond? Now we do business with the expectation of someone cheating us and having to hire lawyers to read the contracts before we buy or sell something. God warns us not to harden our hearts because God knew what the eventual ramifications were. We are living in a time, when hearts are hardened now to God and goodness and softened towards evil and sin. To speak of forgiveness and moral correctness is seen as difficult to swallow and to live lives filled where anger and immorality are parts of daily living is common place. Oh, how our hearts have become hardened to the voice of God! We fail to pray, we find every excuse not to come to mass, we hesitate to give back to God of what he has given us, we seek our own benefit above the common good and we wonder why things are bad? Who are we kidding? How do we expect good when we allow evil to be planted in our hearts and uproot that which is good by its very nature? Personally speaking, the final nail in our own coffin as a society is when we as people of faith not only look the other way but condone that which is wrong by simply saying, "well, who are we to judge" and "as long as they are happy." These are very common sayings which are supposed to reflect our modern and diversified thinking. First, we do not judge people, we judge actions. If we really believe that we have no right to judge, please let us tell our police and our judicial system that they no longer have a place in our society. How we can judge the person who steals or kills or does anything that we now say is illegal? Who made up those antiquated rules anyway? Do you see how twisted that thinking is? We have a responsibility to judge actions for the sake of the common good. You may be happy stealing, but that does not give you the right to do it! We must love all people, but not everything they say or do should be acceptable to us. Not everything is OK; it is not all good. The simple fact is that because we have allowed our hearts to be hardened against God, we have allowed good and evil to be seen as two sides of the same coin and we do not see the difference between them. We have allowed goodness to be seen as evil and evil to be shielded under the guise of tolerance and diversity. As we pray this week, we must seek above all to seek God's help to remove the hardness from our hearts especially towards God himself and for the gift of the Holy Spirit to speak the truth in love. God bless you all. Continued on Page 3 If today your hear His voice, harden not your hearts. Psalm 95

The Parishes of

MALLIA'S MOMENTS

by Fr. Joe Mallia

The responsorial psalm for today's mass warns us not to harden our hearts.

When we accept bad and criminal behavior from those in the public

arena, we are instilling in our children an attitude which tells them everything is acceptable if you are a celebrity or a talented athlete.

50 names from each parish will be drawn for 2 tickets per name. Names may only be submitted once. Names for the drawing must be submitted by Sunday, September 10th. A bus will be available for transportation.

Please fill out the form below and place it into the offertory collection basket or bring it to the parish office. Thank you.

Bible Study Dates:

Bible Study will begin next Monday night and will be held at the Life Center at Holy Family Parish at 7 pm. You are requested to bring a Bible with you. The class is designed for young adults and older. You may join at anytime, and if you are not able to make a specific session that is fine. This will be a process of growing in knowledge and understanding and so the "information" is secondary to the interaction and personal growth dimension. Everyone is most welcome. Don't make an excuse for not coming. If you are free and want to learn what the Bible really says, you should be there. Hope to see many of you on the Monday nights of bible study.

Upcoming Dates: September 18. October 2, 26 and 30. November 13 and 27, and December 11. After Christmas we start up again on January 8 and 22. February 5 and 19; also March 5 and 19. Then April 9 and 23, May 7 and conclude on May 21.

We are still looking for students to play for St. Augustine School teams.

If you are a registered member of any parish that does not have sports teams and you are attending a faith formation class at your church or are home schooled, you are most welcome to play for our school teams. My hope is to have more opportunities for all our children to participate in team sports, but we can't do that without having more children willing to play. Please consider playing for our school. If you are interested, please contact the school for more information. Thank you.

Please get your names in for the raffle drawing for the tickets to the Beatification Mass.

The drawing will be this week for the tickets to the beatification mass at Ford Field on November 18th. The buses will leave the church parking lot at 1pm and the doors open at 2pm for the 4pm mass. Our expectation is to be home around 8pm that night. There is no cost for the tickets or for the bus. A free will donation will be taken for the bus, but that is at your discretion. For those going, I would ask that you make sure that your weekly donation is still made at the church. More information is coming about the security restrictions and other details in the coming weeks, and we will keep you informed as we are aware of them. We do know that there will be tight security and you will not be able to take purses in with you, similar to the rules they have for regular football games at Ford Field.

For those who will not be going to the mass, Fr. John has been kind enough to volunteer to cover both regularly scheduled masses on that Saturday. Thank you Fr. John.

Give a gift of a mass.

Is someone you know having a birthday, a wedding anniversary, an anniversary of the death of a loved one? You may want to consider having their intention be mentioned at mass. For more information about how to request a mass intention, contact the parish office.

Hope you all have a great week God bless you always.

Classes begin Sunday, September 17th and Tuesday, September 19th.

We are still in need of Faith Formation teachers & aides!

Most of us want to know that what we say and do has made a positive impact. A great way to do that is to volunteer to be a catechist. As you read this, take a few seconds to search your heartI Could God be leading you to this opportunity to make a Real Difference?

Not a huge time commitment (2-3 hours a week: half in the classroom, half in preparation). No special knowledge of Scripture or Theology needed. You learn with the children. Lots of support, materials, resources and hands-on help for whatever is needed.

The Lord does not call the Qualified… He qualifies the Called.

Contact the Faith Formation office at either parish for more information. Making an inquiry will not obligate you.

This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 17, 2017. The 2017 theme will be "Living as Missionary Disciples." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. This commissioning will happen at the 9:00 am Mass at St. Augustine and at the 10:30 am Mass at Holy Family Parish. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

Sunday, September 17 Join us for 5:30 pm mass at Holy Family!

...or meet us in the Holy Family Life Center following 5:30 pm mass (approximately 6:30 pm)!

Dinner will be provided! For High School youth ~ grades 9-12!

Q. Why is the Eucharist considered to be the spiritual center of the Catholic faith?

A. The Holy Eucharist is the spiritual center of a parish, a diocese, a religious community, of the Universal Church, and of the whole human race. The Eucharist is the body, blood, soul and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, without whom there would be no hope and no Catholic faith. Under the appearance of bread and wine is the Redeemer of the world. Luke writes “Neither is there salvation in any other. For there is no other name under heaven given to men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Scripture also tells us that Jesus is the one “by whom all things were made” (John 1:3 & 1 Cor 1:16). Jesus, in the Eucharist, will help us obtain the strength to master our passions, purify ourselves of venial sins, and avoid the mortal sins to which our human nature is so easily inclined and Satan is so adept at deceiving. God revealed the magnitude of His love for us by becoming man so that He could sacrifice His life in our place. He remains present to us today in the Eucharist. Pope Paul VI assures us that “in the Eucharist there is nothing more consoling on earth, nothing more effective for advancing along the road of holiness." The reason is obvious. The Jesus in the Eucharist is the very same Jesus who performed miracles and healings and even raised people from the dead. He continues to perform miracles of conversion and sanctification through the Eucharist today - for those who have faith. And therein lies the answer to Catholic Evangelization today. One reason for the tragic separation of so many people from the Catholic Church today is the loss of faith in the Real Presence of the Holy Eucharist. The single most important means towards the restoration of our faith is in the Eucharist. Catholics today should work to reunite a sadly divided Christianity by sharing with others the reality of the Real Presence. It is the mission of every Catholic to lead others back to this spiritual center of the Catholic Church. I can tell you that for me personally it was discovering the Real Presence that began my journey, a third generation Pentecostal, into the Catholic Church. Perhaps by asking this question you too may have doubts about the Eucharist? I suggest that you don’t rely on this, much abbreviated, superficial article to your very important question. I urge you to do an in-depth search for a more complete answer. There are many good books as well as audio and video recordings available through abundant sources. You can start with Scott Hahn’s “Understanding the Eucharist parts 1, 2 & 3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mj5OD2jDGU

Welcome Back!

The start of another school year means summer is just about over. Although the first week may be tough to get back into routines and schedules, this week has been wonderful. Seeing the students fill the hallways and buzzing with excitement fills my heart with joy. We have many new families that have joined the St. Augustine community. Students have been very welcoming and kind to our new friends. We welcome our new families and hope you find yourselves at home.

As we enter this year, there are many improvements and upgrades we have made in order to better serve our students and their families. The middle school students will each be given a Chrome book to use in the classrooms for research, projects and classwork. New textbooks have been ordered to compliment the curriculum and meet the new Archdiocesan standards. We will be launching a new website soon to make it easier for visitors to navigate and find information. The enrollment has increased this year to 160 students, from 135 students last year.

With the support of parents, we can do many wonderful things to help our school grow and our students be independent. Some things you can do to help them become independent is allowing them to carry their backpack, giving them chores to complete at home, etc. They can handle it, and they enjoy the independence. We look forward to watching them grow and change. Let’s make this a fantastic year! Sincerely, Ms. Tina Silvestri Principal

Greetings from 8th grade!

It has become a tradition that I not only choose how to decorate my classroom, but that I come up with a theme or message as part of the room as well. This year I decided to use gold and white décor, and on my large bulletin board, I have the Bible verse “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). A school year typically starts off with a lot of positivity and energy, and sometimes that light can fade when we feel stressed or overwhelmed with the pressures of each day. My goal is that the students have a constant visual reminder to keep their light shining and bring brightness to each day. I also have a poster that reads “Anyone can find the dirt in someone. Be the one who finds the gold.” My hope is that the students and I remember to focus only on others’ strengths, talents, and gifts.

I look forward to a “golden” year with all of our St. Augustine students. For my 8th

graders, they will have so many opportunities to shine – from participating in the “America and Me” essay contest, to becoming field day captains, and just being everyday leaders. I look forward to sharing their accomplishments with you as the year continues.

Sincerely, Mrs. Julie Nader 8th
