www.nakapro.com Digestive enzymes are extremely important for breaking down food into individual nutrients for absorption. Insufficient digestive enzyme production will reduce absorption of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients from food. Ultimately, this can lead to chronic malabsorption, which can be at the root of many illnesses. To realize the importance of digestive enzymes, it is beneficial to review the path of ingested food. The digestive process begins in the mouth with salivary amylase. Amylase is a digestive enzyme that works on breaking down carbohydrates. Food then passes to the stomach where gastric juice containing pepsin and hydrochloric acid further breaks down the food into smaller molecules. From the stomach, the chyme (partially digested food) moves into the small intestine where digestive enzymes are secreted and 90% of digestion and absorption occurs. The pancreas plays an important role in the digestive process. It acts as an exocrine gland and secretes most of the enzymes involved in digestion. Unfortunately, the typical western diet has wreaked havoc on the production of these enzymes. Heavily processed and sugary foods, chemical exposures from pesticides, as well as antibiotics, reduce the body’s ability to make digestive enzymes. Age also plays a factor. Production of digestive enzymes begins to decline at age 20, and by age 70, one could be producing 1/3 of the enzymes required for proper digestion. For those suffering from any of the following: gas, bloating, indigestion, constipation, heart burn or malabsorption, supplementing with a good digestive enzyme may be the key to getting digestion and absorption back on track. Digestive enzymes are extremely important for breaking down food into individual nutrients for absorption.

When choosing a digestive enzyme, one should look for the following ingredients:

If so, you are not alone. Digestive issues are one of the most common problems that cause people to seek medical attention or to miss work. The symptoms listed above are just a few examples of how a deficiency in digestive enzymes can manifest.

Amylase

This enzyme is normally secreted in saliva and by the pancreas. It is responsible for the break down of carbohydrates into glucose molecules that can easily be absorbed through the intestinal wall

Protease

These are proteolytic enzymes secreted in both the stomach

and small intestine and are responsible for the breakdown of proteins. Pepsin, which is secreted in the stomach, trypsin and chymotrypsin, which are secreted by the pancreas, are all protease enzymes. Protease enzymes are required to breakdown proteins, like meat, into amino acids so they can be absorbed in the small intestine and used as the building blocks for protein synthesis in the body.

Lipase

This enzyme is secreted by the pancreas and is used for the breakdown of fats into fatty acids and glycerol molecules. Lipase works hand in hand with bile, which is secreted by the liver.

Cellulase

Plant cells are surrounded by a cell wall composed mostly of cel-lulose. When we ingest plant sources, this is the part of the plant that is considered insoluble fibre. Unlike cows and other animals, humans do not produce the enzyme cellulase required to break down cellulose. A large majority of these fibers are excreted in our stool without ever being broken down. These undigested fibres can leave a film on the small intestine impairing the absorption of nutrients. Cellulase can help to clear the accumulation of this film.

Lactase

This enzyme is required to breakdown lactose into glucose and galactose. Lactose is the sugar found in milk products. As we age our production of lactose decreases but usually remains adequate to digest the amount of lactose found in a typical diet. For some individuals whose small intestines do not produce sufficient lactase, lactose will interact with bacteria in the large intestine and cause symptoms like gas and bloating. This is known as lactose intolerance.

Invertase

This enzyme is particularly important when consuming a western diet, one that is generally high in sugars and starches. Invertase breaks down sucrose into glucose and fructose making them available for absorption and use as energy. One of the reasons ulcers can form is due to sugar remaining in the stomach and causing fermentation. By breaking sucrose down into simple sugars, invertase prevents sugars from staying in the stomach long enough to cause fermentation.

Bromelain

This is a natural proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples. It is commonly used to treat inflammatory conditions like arthritis as well as break down blood clots. As a digestive enzyme, it helps to breakdown proteins into amino acids. It also enhances the activity of pepsin and trypsin, two of the important protease enzymes previously discussed.

Papain

This is another natural proteolytic enzyme derived from papayas. It has traditionally been used to aid in the digestion of meats as well as used topically as a poultice to help with wound healing. The natural protease activity helps in the debridement or removal of dead tissue found on wounds.

Betaine Hydrochloride

Hydrochloric acid (HCL) and pepsin are the main components of gastric juice produced in the stomach. They are responsible for breaking food down into smaller units before they move on to the small intestine where they are further broken down by digestive enzymes. Those who are low in hydrochloric acid can experience a number of symptoms. Common complaints associated with low HCL are: heart burn, bloating, belching, diarrhea, gas, acne, candida, undigested food in stool and constipation. Betaine hydrochloride is a natural source of HCL commonly derived from beet root. Supplementation with Betaine HCL can aid those who might be suffering from poor digestion and absorption due to deficient production of HCL.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek seeds help to soothe the stomach and intestines by providing a mucilaginous coating. Studies have found it to be beneficial in those who suffer from heartburn.

Proper digestion is key to optimal health. If you suspect that your digestion is not up to par, a good digestive enzyme may be the key to getting your health back on track.

Ginger

Ginger root is well known for reducing nausea. It is also a potent digestive aid in that it stimulates the body to secrete digestive enzymes required for digestion.

Lactobacillus acidophilus

This probiotic is very helpful for those who are lactose intolerant. It naturally produces lactase, the enzyme required to break down the lactose found in dairy products. It is also important for fighting off any pathogens that may have made their way into the digestive tract and may be causing diarrhea. Lactobacillus acidophilus is an important part of the body’s natural antibiotic system.
