The River Deben Association has been going for 30 years and is a strong local interest group whose aim is to protect and conserve the character, beauty and environment of the River Deben. RDA is a lobbying and pressure group representing river users. This summer we feel we want to begin to do things a bit differently. We’ve therefore introduced a new category of family membership and we’d be glad if you’d think about joining us. We know you’ll have a lot to offer, especially when we’re thinking about the environment. We’re concerned about the state of the river walls which protect the countryside from fl ooding and we’re also interested in the state of the salt marshes which are part of the river eco-system. We can’t fi x things ourselves but we’re working to fi nd Citizen Science ways in which we can all use our observations to keep up the pressure. We have an Instagram account (@riverdebenassociation) on which you can post a photo if you notice a change that seems worrying and obviously we’re all trying to keep the river plastic-free so, if you have a litter bag with you, please do your bit to help the wildlife.

For many people the River Deben is a source of inspiration – for writing, painting, collecting things, making music. This year, for the fi rst time, we’re running an under-18s photography competition. If photography interests you, we recommend Suffolk photographer Gill Moon’s recent book Take Only Photos, Leave Only Footprints. She’s offering some free photography walks this summer and also does workshops currently for very small numbers to maintain social distance. You’ll need to book via her website (gillmoon.com).

PHOTO COMPETITION: The River Deben is in an area of outstanding natural beauty – but that’s an idea that will mean different things to different people. Take a photo on or near the river which you consider expresses the river’s outstanding natural beauty and enter it into the River Deben Association’s competition.

Here are the competition details:

Send your photo to our Instagram (@riverdebenassociation). In your message write Competition Entry, specifying your age (as of August 31st) and contact details. You can submit up to 3 photos – the closing date is August 31st, 2020.

There are 3 age groups (using your age the closing date):• 9 and under – £10 prize for the winner, £5 for the runner up • 10 to 14 – £20 prize for the winner, £10 for the runner up • 15 to 18 – £30 prize for the winner, £15 for the runner up

All winners and runners-up will also receive a year’s free Family membership of the River Deben Association.

The panel of judges will make their decision by 15th September and winners will be notifi ed using the contact details they supply.

By submitting your photo, you give the River Deben Association consent to use the photo for its own purposes, including publishing on its website and in its magazine.

New Chair

The River Deben Association is pleased to announce that Joeske Van Walsum takes over as acting Chair with immediate effect (pending formal appointment at the next AGM). The previous Chair, Sarah Zins, will stay on as Vice Chair.

Joeske Van Walsum said:

“It is with great pleasure that I take on this position. I am a relatively new resident of Woodbridge (my wife Rachel and I moved here in August 2018 with our 12 year old son Hans) and I want to make a contribution to the community.

In some ways it is a grim time but perhaps it is also a time when people try to fi nd some meaning in life and appreciate more than ever the wonderful environment with which we are blessed. I for one, could hardly manage without my daily dose of walking along the wonderful River Deben!

We need more members to make our ‘voice’ stronger. Currently we have 820 which is 3.5% of the population of the parishes neighbouring the river. That is quite substantial, but I am targeting 10% i.e. around 2500!”

A Woodbridge hotel which has been through the toughest three months in its 28-year history has won an award for the family values that have pulled it through.

Ufford Park Hotel, Golf and Spa was named Family Business of the Year at the Family Business United Awards 2020 during a virtual award ceremony celebrating hundreds of family business across the UK.

Managing Director, Tarnia Robertson said the award was a huge boost at a time when they needed it most.

“The last few months have been extremely tough – the toughest three months we have ever experienced,” she said.

“In fact, this is the fi rst time in the last three decades that we have had to stop trading and close the doors to customers and members and like many businesses in the hospitality industry, this has been tough.

To be recognised for this award after such a diffi cult time for our staff is amazing. We believe it is our family values and ethos that has seen us through – we have all pulled together to get through and we are a supportive team with a

Tarnia Robertson took over the running of the hotel from her parents in 2015 and her children have now taken on casual roles in the business, making them the third generation to be involved in Ufford Park.

Tarnia said: “We have worked very hard to combine the traditional elements of our business with modernising, which has future proofed it. Part of this has included extensive refurbishments while maintaining our focus on customer care that my parents have always held dear.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ufford Park has been closed to the public since 24 March 2020 but reopened its doors to the public on Friday 10 July 2020. You can fi nd out more on their website: www.uffordpark.co.uk

Woodbridge Tide Mill Museum re-opened on Saturday and Sunday 4 – 5 July and will now be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The Mill has acquired the Industry Standard ‘Good to Go’ mark which means that it has followed government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, has a Risk Assessment in place and a process to maintain cleanliness and aid social distancing. The Mill, which relies on visitors’ entrance fees and purchases to survive has, like

many, been severely hit by lockdown. It has, however, not been sitting idle. The Mill restarted milling from the middle of May. A great deal of effort was spent making sure the processes were fully compliant with all the guidance associated with working whilst the pandemic exists. A small team of younger volunteers led by Mill Manager Dan Tarrant- Willis and Ian Gray has done a great job. Over two tonnes of grain has been milled and the resulting fl our distributed to the Mill’s customers.

A major external redecoration of the Tide Mill also commenced in mid-May and is now complete. The result has drawn a lot of positive comment. Thanks to Nigel Barratt

and Tim Buxbaum for overseeing this.A lot of work has been done to ensure visitors and staff are safe when the Mill re-opens. Visitor numbers will be limited to pre-booked time-slots which can be purchased via: www.woodbridgetidemill.org or directly from: www.ticketgun.com/events/woodbridge-tide-mill-re-opening. The Mill has produced a revised Visitors Guide which is on the website or here https://tinyurl.com/millopen

TURBAN CENTRE CLEAN UP

Having heard that the weeds growing in Woodbridge Town Centre were to be controlled by weedkiller, Transition Woodbridge decided they would prefer to remove at least some of these weeds without herbicide. So, on a recent Sunday afternoon after the Co-op Supermarket had closed, a group of three Transition Woodbridge members armed with a sharpened hoe, a litter picker, a sweeping brush and dustpan and rubbish bags spent a couple of hours removing the weeds and all the litter. The Turban Centre has remained weed free so far, but sadly within 24 hours there was more litter, particularly cigarette butts, despite there being two rubbish bins nearby.

This effort was part of the group’s aim to improve the biodiversity of our town, to increase the number of wildlife species in Woodbridge and Melton. Around the area Transition Woodbridge has planted over the last 5 years, over 50 apple, pear, plum and damson trees making a scattered community orchard. Volunteers, on a rota, water each tree every week through the summer months for the fi rst 3 years after planting to help their survival in this dry part of the country. The trees are for people living nearby to enjoy – the blossom in the spring and the fruit in the autumn. It is hoped that as the trees grow they

will become a focal point for the community, a meeting point, a place for a picnic. In the Edible Garden at Woodbridge Library, members of Transition Woodbridge, with the support of Woodbridge in Bloom and Woodbridge WI, are growing vegetables and soft fruit for everyone visiting the library to pick and enjoy. In various small gardens around town – at the top of Chapel Street, near the skateboard park, in two dinghies in front of the Long Shed at Woodbridge Historic Riverside, Transition Woodbridge members have planted a wide variety of small trees, shrubs, perennial and annual fl owers.

The aim of all these gardens and the orchards is to grow plants that will help bees, butterfl ies, moths and other insects. The numbers of these creatures have declined signifi cantly in recent years for a variety of reasons but including the use of herbicides/pesticides. No chemicals are used in the gardens and orchards and any compost used is peat free. Transition Woodbridge hope that others in Woodbridge and Melton will follow these examples to help improve biodiversity even more.

LOVE THE RIVER DEBEN BUT HATE LITTER?

In the summers of 2018 and 2019 Transition Woodbridge joined forces with Woodbridge Sea Scouts to remove litter from both banks of the River Deben near Woodbridge. We were amazed and appalled by what was found.

This year, because of the pandemic and the need to keep a distance from others, the Sea Scouts can’t be involved. Transition Woodbridge have also decided that we cannot organise a community litter pick on a single day. Instead we hope that members and supporters and anyone who loves the river, will collect litter from along the river bank anywhere between Kyson Point to Wilford Bridge at any time during August, as

individuals or in family groups. This could include Kingston Fields and the car parks between the Avenue and the Riverside Cinema. If you go on the river in a dinghy or canoe then you might consider collecting rubbish you fi nd in the river or on the river bank (always wear a life jacket).

If you are willing to do this please kit yourself out with a pair of gardening gloves, a couple of plastic (sorry) bags and possibly a litter picking stick (available to buy from Webb Bros, hardware shop in Church St) and do follow this advice: Never put yourself in any danger to collect litter.

If you fi nd litter that is dangerous, too large or heavy then leave it but, if possible, take a photo to send with an email to Suffolk Coastal Norse ([email protected]) giving the position of the rubbish. They will then collect it safely. The same applies if you fi nd fl y tipped rubbish.

Collect recyclable litter (cans, plastic or glass bottles) in one bag and non-recyclable rubbish (cigarette butts or packets, snack and crisp bags, bits of paper, grotty stuff) in the other bag. At the end put the litter in the appropriate bin either at home or in town.

If you can, take a photo of your collection and a list of your fi nds to send us. We can then put photos on our website, Facebook etc to highlight the problem of litter and the damage it does to our environment. We can also pass information on to the AONB and to Beachwatch. Only include a photo of yourself and your family if you are ok with it being published.

Enjoy your walk near our beautiful river and be happy that you are helping to care for our environment.

Club members have now been able to launch boats and sailing has started, albeit under new conditions. It has been a joy for members to get on the water sailing around the water ways, rivers and seas, and seeing other members on their boats as they pass. Lucky members have been able to spend peaceful nights aboard their boats at anchor or on buoys, waking to seals, birds and wild life – a welcome change.

Club life has not resumed fully, but online life carries on. The popular photography competition ended on a high note for the last one, with the theme of ‘My favourite thing’ attracting a wide range of diverse entries, from chocolate treats, to treasured souvenirs. The winning entry from Ruth Mezits was chosen by club Cruise Cap-tain Mark Richardson because “I liked the intricacy and patterns of the shapes, as well as the diversity of the special objects in the boxes”.

As the sailing season is now starting, it was deemed appropriate to end the lockdown photography competition, thus allowing members to send in photos of their cruises.

The bar is opening for club members, and it will be a joy for members to meet up in real life, as well as online. Although Woodbridge Cruising Club has its own Instagram now, with an ever-growing following, it is a real boost to be able to see friends for real.

The cruise programme is being reviewed, and subject to lockdown still easing and marinas opening, there should be trips to Ramsgate and Dover, Walton Backwaters, Lowestoft and Southwold, Blackwater, Walton Pond – culminating in the Three Rivers and end of cruise dinner at RHYC in September. Trips are being planned from July through to September. Members are hoping these may occur in some form or other, and bookings are going ahead.Do you enjoy all things nautical, and have a boat (whether power or sail)? Then the

cruising club is for you. If you are tempt-ed by the activities, do check out the club website where full details are found, www.woodbridgecruisingclub.org.

WOODBRIDGE CRUISING CLUB

An incredible feat & incredibly aching feet to raise funds for Macmillan cancer support

Over the past few months St Audry’s Golf Club has been most fortunate to welcome a number of new members. A couple of these are Stuart Bailey & Tom Norton who, on Saturday 27th June, pushed themselves to the limit for the great cause of raising funds for Macmillan cancer support. They were part of Macmillan’s ‘longest day golf challenge’ which for them meant that they’d be playing 54 holes at St Audry’s in just one day and having a change of scenery by slipping in 18 holes over at Ufford Park Golf Club! 72 holes in just one

day and all this without the aid of buggies. Looks like St Audry’s have come up with a pair of genuine heroes!

In their own words…

“Because of the corona virus lockdown and grim fi gures for charity donations at an all-time low we felt we needed to do something now. Whilst the country is in lockdown, cancer doesn’t stop and without Macmillan support many sufferers won’t get the help and support they need and deserve. The challenge itself was very hard, as even before we fi nished the fi rst 9 holes we had a golf trolley collapse, the heavens

opened and we spent most of the day in strong sideways rain. However, getting an email whilst playing, saying we’d had new donations certainly kept us motivated in the wind and rain. After 49,651 steps, 27.79km and 14 hours of constant playing we feel proud that we achieved it and managed to raise almost £500 in a month of fundraising and hopefully we can still get a few more donations”.
