Picken stating that a public meeting had been held on 19th November, 1949, setting out the following resolutions which had been passed: (i.) That the Urban District Council be asked to recon- sider the recent allocation of Coun- cil houses; and that the Coun- cil be asked to adopt a points system when allocating Council houses and that due regard be given to the booklet, "Housing of Tenants," issued by the Minister of Health.— It was recommended: (i.) that Mr J. E. Picken be informed that the Council could not reverse the deci- sion made regarding the allocation of houses in course of erection on Montalbo Road; and- (ii.) that the Council was not prepared to insti- tute a " points system " for the allocation of tenants, which had previously been tried and fouud un- i the debate, saying that suitable, as it was considered that rved his remarks. The Clerk presented a petition from the tenants of the Victoria Road houses for the installation ot wash basins and cold water supplj into the wash-houses. It was recom- mended that an estimate of the cost of installation of wash basins and cold water supply iuto the wash- houses of the Victoria Road houses be obtained and submitted to the next meeting. Coun. G. A. Carter inquired why this should arise at this moment, and he hoped that the Council would not be saddled with the extra cost. The Clerk explained that the ten- ants would eventually pay for any iniproveinents. Sub-Divisional Police Headquarters, Bede Kirk Site. It was recommended that the tentative layout plan of a portion ot the Bede Kirk site proposed to bo used as Police Headquarters and four police houses, submitted by the County Planning Officer, be agreed in principle, but that the Surveyor bo instructed to confer with the Couuty Planning Officer regarding the width oi the proposed access road from Bede Road, and the dev- elopment of the remaining portion of .the Bede Kirk site. Airs Rutter proposed that this matter be further discussed in committee, as she felt that at this stage the Council's views should be submitted only without committing the Council to any further action. The proposal was agreed to. Christmas Markets and Holidays. The Clerk read a letter from the Ministry Two Piano Recital Music lovers in Barnard Castle and Richmond are looking forward to .the two-piano recital which luge- borg Petersen and Leonard Randall will be giving at the Witham Hall, Barnard Castle* on Thursday, Dec- ember 8th, and at the King's Head Assembly Hall, Richmond, the previous Tuesday (December 20th): The programme includes many popular works by Chopin, Liszt, Bach, Do Ealla, Biisone, Areusky Poiileuc, and Melan Gueroult. Their first two-piano recital in Barnard Castle was given during the war at the Bowes Museum, and a second one was gu-en there under the auspices of the Arts Council. They are now well-known to music- lovers in the North, having given many recitals aud broadcasts, the most recent given this month from the Leeds Studio. Prior to the wai they gave many recitals in Loudon and the South. Cast year great interest was aroused when ttiey arranged a con- cert at the Witham Hall given by the pupils that they teach iu Bar- nard Caste and surrounding areas. Miss Petersen and Mr Randall (Mr and Mrs Randall) both com- menced their musical studies at the same school of music in London, and at the age of five and nine respec- tively appeared at the same concert as soloists. Ail iwell-known and seasoned play- ers, their flawless presentation of ' Ys hilarious comedy was one ot the 'list productions ever seen in the area. F. Brown. Colonel Watson then gave a very interesting talk on the pre- paration for and invasion of Sicily, and the part played by the local Company iu the action. He had with him the original maps ami plans as used there, also a splendid album of photographs of the Battal- ion iu Egypt and Italy. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed it and many questions were asked and answered. The chairman thanked Col. Watson very much for his very interesting talk, and the members are looking forward to his next visit with the cinematograph. L.R.A.M., L.Musc. f .C.L. OBITUARY THE LATE MR T. DOBSON. The death occurred at 2, Temper- ance Terrace, Bridge End, Start- forth, on November loth, of Mr Thomas Dobson. aged 74 years. He started work at an early age at the Uilathorne Mill and was employed there as a stationary fireman until it closed down in the 1930's. He was a keen angler aud up to recent- ly followed his hobby, and generally returned with a catch of trout. He served in the Army during the 1914- 18 War. He ce'ebtated his Golden Wadding in 1911. He leaves two sous and two daughters. The funeral was at Siartfoith Church, the Rev. G. Rayuer, Vicar, officiating. Bearers were Messrs W. Coulthard, A. Coulthard, W. Jones and F. Waine. Special Savings Week Barnard Castle Bride COMMITTEE RECEIVE8 REPORTS Barnard Castle urban and rural districts savings committee met in " Woodleigh," Barnard Castle, on Saturday week, when reports on the special savings week in October were presented. County Coun. C. T. Singer presided Coun. V. Garter, hon. treasurer for the special week, presented the financial figures which revealed a grand "total of £7,021. Mr A. E. Eason, hon. secretary, said that the committee could con- gratulate themselves on the week's work by virtue of the fact that although they had not reached the target of £10,000, they had doubled the weekly average. The Commit- tee, he added, were not compelled to set a monetary .target tor that carried bouquets special week. The main theme was to raise the standard of the nation- al saviugs movement, to give it publicity and if possible to increase the number of savings groups and savers. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a charming gown of white chiffon vel- vet with bridal veil and head-dress of orange blossom. She carried a shower bouquet of red roses. Mr Clark was a native of Shildon and was at one time an engine driver on the L.N.E.R. On his retirement he lived in Swaie- dale Avenue, Darlington. Latterly he made his home at Porch House, Gainford, with his youngest daugh- ter, Mrs W. R, lvesou, alter his wife's death. He made many friend, iu the village, all of whom thought very highly of him, for he was of a genial and kindly disposition. A service was held in Geinford Parish Church, conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. E. H . Wale .and was largely attended. The organ- ist was M r Minto, of Shildon. The chief mourners were: Mr and Mrs Wm. P icken s t a t i n g t h a t a public meet ing had been held on 19th November, 1949, se t t ing ou t the fo l lowing resolutions which had been passed: ( i . ) T h a t the Urban D i s t r i c t Counci l be asked to recon­sider the recent al location of Coun­c i l houses; and tha t the Coun­c i l be asked to adopt a points system when a l locat ing Council houses and t h a t due regard be g iven t o the booklet , " H o u s i n g o f Tenan t s , " issued by t h e M i n i s t e r of H e a l t h . — I t was recommended: (i.) t h a t M r J . E . The Cle rk presented a pet i t ion from the tenants of the Victoria Road houses for the ins ta l la t ion ot wash basins and cold water suppl j in to the wash-houses. I t was recom­mended tha t an est imate of the cost of ins ta l l a t ion of wash basins and cold water supply i u t o the wash-houses of the V i c t o r i a Road houses be obtained and submi t ted to the next meet ing.

Coun. G. A . Car te r inquired why this should arise a t th i s moment, and he hoped tha t the Council would not be saddled w i t h the ex t ra cost.

The Clerk explained that the ten­ants would eventually pay for any iniproveinents.

and Richmond are looking forward t o .the two-piano reci ta l which luge-borg Petersen and Leonard Randal l w i l l be g i v i n g at the W i t h a m H a l l , Ba rna rd Castle* on Thursday, Dec­ember 8 t h , and at the K i n g ' s Head Assembly H a l l , R ichmond, the previous Tuesday (December 2 0 t h ) :

The programme includes many popular works by Chopin, L i s z t , Bach, Do Eal la , Biisone, Areusky Poiileuc, and Melan Gueroul t .

Their f i r s t two-piano reci ta l in Barna rd Castle was given d u r i n g the war a t the Bowes Museum, and a second one was gu-en there under the auspices of the A r t s Counci l .

They are now wel l -known to music-lovers i n the N o r t h , hav ing given many recitals aud broadcasts, the most recent given th is month from the Leeds Studio. P r i o r to the w a i they gave many recitals i n Loudon and the South.

Cast year great interest was aroused when ttiey arranged a con­cer t a t the W i t h a m H a l l given by the pupils t ha t they teach i u Bar­nard Cas t e and sur rounding areas.

Miss Petersen and M r Randal l ( M r and M r s Randa l l ) both com­menced the i r musical studies a t the same school of music in London, and a t the age of five and nine respec­t i v e l y appeared a t the same concert as soloists. Both are L . R . A . M .

OBITUARY T H E L A T E MR T. DOBSON.

The death occurred a t 2, Temper­ance Terrace, Br idge E n d , S ta r t -f o r t h , on November l o t h , of M r Thomas Dobson. aged 74 years. H e s t a r t ed work at an early age a t the Ui la thorne M i l l and was employed there as a s ta t ionary f ireman u n t i l i t closed down in the 1930's. H e was a keen angler aud up to recent­l y followed his hobby, and generally re tu rned w i t h a catch of t r o u t . H e served i n the A r m y d u r i n g the 1914-18 War . H e ce'ebtated his Golden Wadding i n 1911. H e leaves two sous and two daughters.

The funeral was a t S i a r t f o i t h Church, the Rev. G. Rayuer , Vicar , officiating. Bearers were Messrs W . Coul thard , A . Coul thard , W . Jones and F . Waine . The undertaker was M r H . Waiue .

ford on Tuesday, .November 22nd. of M r Rober t C la rk , of Porch House, Gain tord , who died after a short illness. M r Clark was a nat ive of Shi ldon and was at one t ime an engine dr iver on the L . N . E . R . On his re t i rement he l ived in Swaie-dale Avenue, D a r l i n g t o n . L a t t e r l y he made his home at Porch House, Gainford , w i t h his youngest daugh­ter, M r s W . R, lvesou, a l te r his wife's death. H e made many f r i e n d , i u the vi l lage, a l l of whom thought very h i g h l y of h i m , for he was of a genial and k i n d l y disposi t ion.

The death occurred in D a r l i n g t o n Memor ia l Hospi ta l on Monday n ight of M r John Birkett, West P a r k F a r m , Cotherstone, who was admi t t ed earlier in the day suffering from injuries received i n an acci­dent. H e was 35 years of age.
