iEXCEL Executive SummaryThis year has witnessed the rapid evolution of the iEXCEL program as well as exciting enhancements to the design of the Davis Global Center.
The iEXCEL Advisory Board, Executive Committee and Strategic Advisory Group have each continued to provide invaluable guidance during all stages of program development, as well as the design and construction of the Davis Global Center. In addition, our global industry collaborators have enthusiastically supported the growth of iEXCEL by actively participating in conferences and community engagements, including the KANEKO Reality Exhibition and the iEXCEL Visionary Speaker Series.
To facilitate connectivity across Nebraska, interactive digital walls (iWalls) have been installed in Scottsbluff and Kearney complete with software that enables real-time collaboration among the remote teaching sites. iEXCEL also launched the EON Reality Virtual Reality Innovation Academy (VRIA). This academy offers an 11-month course and an industry certificate upon completion, preparing participants to join a modern workforce using their newfound skills in 3D and AR/VR content creation.
This academic year also saw rapid growth in the iEXCEL visualization and simulation staff capabilities with the addition of specialists in areas such as computer programming and surgical simulation. These teams are already creating dynamic medical content and realistic simulation scenarios that “bring learning alive”
for all health care students and Nebraska Medicine staff.
As the iEXCEL team enters the planning phase for occupying the Davis Global Center, several multidisciplinary faculty work groups are actively engaged in preparing for the center to open in fall 2019. iEXCEL is experiencing tremendous momentum as the team offers faculty, students and Nebraska Medicine staff new opportunities in experiential learning and innovative research.
Enthusiasm for iEXCEL is resonating among a wide array of sectors beyond health care and promoting the creation of new public-private and community partnerships. This has resulted in iEXCEL hosting many national and international visitors, who come to Omaha to experience this ambitious project.
Thus, thanks to the leadership of the University of Nebraska, UNMC, Nebraska Medicine and a highly-committed and generous community, this extraordinary public-private partnership is rapidly advancing the journey towards Improving Human Performance & Effectiveness in Health Care!

Advanced Clinical Simulation
A team of experienced clinical simulation professionals design and support high-quality training sessions for the UNMC colleges, Nebraska Medicine and various external organizations.Advanced simulation is currently available in the Sorrell Clinical Simulation Lab, and, while this team is operational, they too are preparing to expand simulation opportunities with the opening of the Davis Global Center.
The Sorrell Clinical Simulation Lab was a key resource this year for the College of Medicine’s new block curriculum, which incorporates medical simulation for first year students. Exercises included learning Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), physical examination and a variety of basic and advanced procedural skills.
Standardized Patient ProgramStandardized Patients (SPs) are trained to portray the characteristics and symptoms of a real patient. They give students and licensed health care professionals the opportunity to learn and be assessed on patient communication and history taking skills. SPs provide feedback for the learner verbally and/or through an electronic checklist. This form of simulation provides a safe, controlled setting in which students experience the initial stress and awkwardness of interacting with patients, for example by participating in office visits and practicing ultrasounds, thereby building professional confidence.
The Davis Global Center will house the National Center for Health Security and BiopreparednessThis highly-specialized center on the ground level is led by experienced clinical experts who offer training for health professionals who care for patients with infectious diseases.
