Building Materials

I chose to use Advantech particle board for the sub flooring because it is made from recycled product and it can with stand water.

I also chose a recycled particle board for the roof under the metal.

I chose fire clay tile for my bathrooms and kitchens due to its eco friendly construction.

For the other flooring in the house I chose bamboo hardwood because it not only looks good but because it is an abundent renewable source.

My drywall is a recycle content drywall.

Building Materials

For the HVAC we chose a geothermal which may be high dollar up front but it pays off in the long run.

We also chose to use a eco friendly paint.

The siding is fiber cement board.

The roofing is a metal roof which is about the most eco friendly out of your choices.

I also used skylites to help with the living quarters lighting at an energy efficient cost.

For insulation I chose cellulose which is also recycled.

For mulch in the land scape we chose the recycled rubber mulch.

Floor Plan Layout

The reason I laid the floor plan out the way I did was because I think that for 10 people to live together that a roommate isn’t a bad thing and you can even benefit socially from this. I put enough bathrooms on the second floor so that more then likely you shouldn’t have to wait in line. Also on the second floor I put a large laundry room which all will share and shouldn’t have a problem. A small kitchenette on the second floor for drinks and snacks. I also put a small living room up here just as a place to go and relax.

On level one you will find a large game room for people including guest to enjoy. I also put a man and a women’s separate bathroom. I put a big dining room right across from the kitchen for easy access. I put a pretty good size living room here

Floor Plan Layout

for everyone to enjoy. On the first floor you will also find a computer room for you to go in and study because you will probably get tired of just staring at the walls in your room. If you really focus on the second floor you will find that there are five bedrooms and four baths. Each bedroom will consist of two people using bunk beds or even separate which is optional. Each person will have there own 2x3 closet in the corner of the room. The laundry room being on the second floor should also be very handy for washing clothes, so you wont have to go up and down stairs.

Timeline First I’ll need to get a survey crew out and get this lined out and then start digging for the footer (1 week).

Next I’ll need to poor the footer and lay the cinder block foundation (2 weeks).

Now I will lay all of my drain tile and start backfilling then start the framing. This step will go from the plate board put on the cinder block, walls, doors, windows all the way to setting the truss’s and putting on the particle board roofing, also allow for bad weather (6 weeks).

Now I will have the plumber in and then the electrician, roofer and the Hvac crew in all around the same time. This will be considered the rough in and should take (2 weeks).

Now I will have the insulation blown in the walls. (1 week)

Now I have people putting siding on and people inside hanging drywall. This should take around (2 weeks).

Now we can blow insulation in the ceiling/attic (1 week).

Now we will primer the house and paint it and then start installing the tile and hardwood. That should take about (3weeks).

Now that that is done I’m going to have the plumber, HVAC and electricians back to finish up and get inspected. (2 weeks)

Now we are going to install all cabinets and counter tops and put down some trim. (1 week).

Now we will do a final walk through and check everything out to make sure we have not missed anything and we will head outside to do some landscaping (1 week).

With the weather cooperating, 22 weeks is the total from start to finish on this project.

Conclusion

Overall I had fun with this project and learned some about green materials for building. I was the general contractor in my own home about 5 years ago so this has been pretty familiar to me other then the green building side of it. I went very energy efficient when I built, but I wouldn’t call it green. I installed a geothermal unit and love it. The project was fun and I am glad to have explored green building materials as to where I didn’t know what all truly was out there.
