Roy Perkins was named an athlete representative at the beginning of the year to meet the 20% athlete rule and was not officially elected

If the updated by-laws are approved, I would like to elect three athlete representatives this year

Athlete Representative Candidate Statements Erin Taggart

Hello I’m Erin Taggart and I want to be an athlete representative. I am a sophomore at La Costa Canyon High School where I participate on the varsity swim team. I am on the Senior Team with RSD, and on an all-girl volunteer organization called Female Athlete Volunteers. I started swimming when I was six years old in Houston, Texas. I moved to California in 2010 and I have been a part of SI swimming as well as All-Star and Imperial Zones teams for many years. Also, I was on the Ocean’s Seven team that swam the Catalina Channel in under eight hours and raised twenty thousand dollars for Fresh Start, a charity that gives free surgeries to children who cannot afford them. I have gotten to know many people in San Diego, and it is important to me that athletes get a voice in important matters in the swimming community.

Maria Davila

My name is Maria Davila, and I am hoping to be elected as next year’s athlete rep for San Diego. . For me, being an athlete rep this past year has meant being a role model in and out of the water. I’ve had the chance to showcase this through my 9 years as a South Bay Aquatics swimmer, running the timing system for meets since I was 11 years old, announcing at the past several JOs and Winter Championships, and simultaneously dedicating myself in school--as shown by my 4.32 GPA. Over the past year,

I’ve also had the opportunity to help organize this past Swimposium and attend the USA Swimming National Convention as an athlete rep--with the athlete vote for San Diego. After attending the convention, I walked away with the goal of increasing athlete involvement in our LSC. Most of our athletes don’t realize that there is a governing body of swimming, or that their voice can even make a difference in it. If I am selected as this year’s athlete rep for San Diego, I will help increase athlete involvement as well as educate our athletes on the various things that make up USA Swimming and impact our LSC.

Martine Abouchabki

Hi my name is Martine Abouchabki and I swim on Pacific Swim in the senior group. I've been swimming for 10 years and now compete at the regional senior level. I embody all the characteristics that reflect my team such as persevering, hard working, discipline, commitment, competitiveness, and team work. I have a very strong personality that I use to encourage and lead the team not only during a workout but outside the pool. I strive to be a role model and encourage the younger swimmers to be part of our big family. I want them to have the same memorable experiences as I have. During my summers teaching swim lessons and seeing the fun the children have in the water reminds me of why I still swim today. I would like to be an athlete representative to have a voice for not only my teammates but for all age swimmers in San Diego.

Natalie Smith

My name is Natalie Smith and I am a senior swimmer with Pacific Swim. San Diego Imperial Swimming has been a major part of my life. I have been a swimmer in this LSC for over nine years, and throughout this time, I have met and become friends with swimmers, coaches, and officials. One thing that I have learned over the years is that SI swimming is very much a family.

As a swimmer, I have seen the way our LSC works from that perspective. I have competed at every level within and for our LSC. I’ve progressed from C Meets and JO Max, to JOs, All Stars, Zones, and now regional senior meets. I have also had the honor to represent SI swimming as the 2013 Zone Team co-captain, and I am currently a Pacific Swim team captain.

Now, I would love the opportunity to learn how the LSC works from the inside. I am interested in representing athletes in order to continue the good experience and I had growing up in our LSC. As

athlete representative, I would like to work to support and promote a culture of inclusion and acceptance of all swimmers. I would also seek out and listen to swimmers’ feedback, and help to ensure that swimmers’ concerns or suggestions are shared with the LSC leadership.

Thank you for the opportunity to be considered as athlete representative

Safe Sport Report Jolyn Yanez

1. The incident from the Freestyle Festival North Event #003 addressed by the

Safe Sport, Diversity & Inclusion, and Board of Directors reached conclusion. An announcement by SDI was posted to our website and Facebook page and was intended to reach the parents of our membership. The purpose of putting out a statement from the LCS was to show that the SDI did not approve of what happened and we will support anyone who feels they have been mistreated while participating as a member of SDI.

2. Attached to this report is the Safe Sport Scenario for November . Please share with your athlete members in your next team meeting.

3. Teams are bringing on new staff members for the fall as team membership during these months as teams grow. Visit USA Swimming online for the following member resources:

Deal with a Safe Sport concern Initiate a background check Complete a preemployment screening Put Safe Sport policies in place Access Safe Sport training materials Fill my club’s toolkit Learn more about USA Swimming Safe Sport Find out what Safe Sport is up to

a. Use the USAS tools provided on the Safe Sport page when hiring new staff for your team.

4. The Safe Sport Shield logo can be found on the Safe Sport page (look for the toolkit link) of the USAS website. If your team has not done so already, please update your team’s websites to include a link to the USAS Safe Sport page by Friday, December 2, 2016.

Read this scenario to your athletes : You see a bunch of social media posts by one of your teammates. The posts are about another teammate, and they’re really mean about how they look and their other hobbies. You know that these teammates don’t really talk at practice, but you didn’t think they hated each other. Looking at these social media posts really bothers you. Discussion Questions :

What do you do?

Kids might say, “I don’t know.” They might want to tell someone, but they don’t know who to tell. >Safe Sport says: You can do a few things. First, show your support for the teammate who is the target of the posts. Let him/her know that they are a valued member of team. Next, you can let the coach know that this is happening, especially since it’s involving two teammates and could impact the team environment.

Should you respond to the post online?

>Safe Sport says: You could respond by commenting on your support for the target, but you could also tell your teammate who posted the mean things how it looked/felt in person at practice.

Does it change how you respond if the person who posted the mean stuff is a good friend of yours?

Kids might say that they would be more comfortable confronting a friend versus confronting a teammate with whom they’re not close. >Safe Sport says: If you’re comfortable talking to your friend about it, do it! Let him/her know that what they did was out of line. If you’re not comfortable talking with them, tell your coach.

Bonus Question : What if you see a post on social media of one of your teammates wearing a team shirt and doing something that is against the rules/law?

Kids might say that they would confront their teammate or brush it off. >Safe Sport says: How your team is represented matters. If your team code of conduct includes athlete behavior while representing the team, this should extend to social media. Talk with the team about what the expectations are when they’re wearing the team shirt, traveling, or competing with the team.

Wrap It Up : How do we show respect for one another on this team?

You’re not always going to like everyone on the team, and that’s okay. You don’t have to be best friends, but you DO have to respect each other and get along. Everyone contributes to the team in some way, and it is not good for the team environment when someone puts down another teammate or bullies. >How do we build each other up and hold each other accountable for our actions with teammates?

*For Coaches: for more information on team culture, visit www.usaswimming.org/toolkit. To report concerning behavior, contact Safe Sport at (719) 866-4578 or [email protected].

Officials Committee Report John Smigal No report submitted.

Equipment Report Carlos Davila I. Meets:

We have had 5 meets since the last board meeting. In general, the timing system equipment was working fine for all of them.

a. Equipment 1. We had no big problems with the equipment; just one of the start boxes had low power on the batteries and we used the backup start box. We recharged the one that had the low battery, everything worked fine. 2. Pads: Still no solution for the slippery surface problems on the touch pads that SBA replaced and we use them due to the double meets of the 2016 long course season. We will be trying a clear anti slippery spray to see if we can solve the problem. The sand paper company that was thinking in using us as testers got an order from Germany headquarters that they should not show the product before they have all the patterns and legal rights, in few words no solution in this way yet.

II. PA: The new PA system was bought and we tested it at the MRA meet on Sunday and also at the Swimposium; it worked great and we are ready for the LSC Championship Meets.

III. Next meets: Everything is ready for the December meets.

Operational Risk (was Safety) Report Kate Thornton No report.

Age Group Vice Chair Sean Redmond Meets

Zones –Hotel reservations have been made in Roseville for the 2017 AG Western Zone meet.

All‑star meet ‑ I still have not heard back from the Age Group Chair of AZ swimming about a potential dual meet. What would the group like to do?

Diversity Committee Report Krissy Payton Still would like a couple more people for our committee. From the North county would be nice. Wanting to work on Scholarships for meet entries and possibly a D & I Catch the Spirit camp in the

future. The Western Zone D& I committee discussed what other LSC's are doing towards Helping promote

Diversity within their own areas. Many ideas out there.

They are discussing a D&I Swim Meet. We told them to come to San Diego, all meets are Diversity and Inclusion.

Adaptive Swimming Don Watkinds No report.

Swimposium and Catch the Spirit Camp Report Mary Redmond A special thank you goes out to the following team who without their assistance this event would not

have happened: Rich Cosgrove, Maria Davila, Tim Marsh, Jason Ornelas, Lynn Fazen, Andrea Hoff,

Dan Peck and John Smigal. Lynn was instrumental in providing our guests with goodie baskets and

obtaining our volunteer athletes who assisted with registration, getting the coaches, officials and

parents to their respective sessions and assisting our Olympians with the in water session. Thanks to

Dan Peck for volunteering to give a parent session on swimming and college.

The Catch the Spirit camp was headed up by Kevin Eslinger who with the staff of Krissy Payton, Greg

Spire, Niki Lopez and Chris Yarranton put on an amazing clinic. The athletes were engaged the entire

time with games, talks and inwater technique session. Kate Thornton was the guest speaker and

shared her personal experience as an athlete with the parents and athletes.

Please see attached financial statement.

Some of the comments received from the parents: This was a wonderful event. Thanks for the opportunity to parcipate. The whole day seem well organized. The group was not too big. Everything great‐ we need more, more, more I loved the concept of the camp. My daughter was thrilled to be able to aend

Some of the comments received from the athletes: I know how to enjoy swimming more. I learned how to use self‐ talk. It made me realize how much l love it. They told me that even if the person in the lane might beer than me, but if I have a lane, I have

a chance Due to the success of the event a Swimposium has been requested for Fall 2019. LSC’s are allowed to host one every 3 years. There has been a request for addional Catch the Spirit camps. We are allowed to host 4 per year. USA Swimming will be changing the camps and we will be informed what the changes will be in 2017. The following was written by Maria Davila and it could not have been said better. This was also on

the website.

San Diego Imperial Swimming had a very successful Swimposium and Catch the Spirit camp this past October. During Saturday’s Swimposium, athletes had the opportunity to meet and swim with Olympians Jason Lezak and Caitlin Leverenz. In the water acvies included technique and stroke work. Swimmers even

had the chance to race against Leverenz in all four strokes. Coaches, parents, and Officials also benefied from talks and clinics given throughout the day by Ron Van Pool, David Benzel, Sco Colby, and our own Dan Peck. Sunday’s Catch the Spirit camp proved beneficial to our swimmers. Led by Coach Kevin Eslinger and other local coaches, athletes learned new drills and ways to approach their starts and turns. Friendships developed in athletes across the county as they became united and gained a greater love for the sport of swimming. Overall, the weekend ended in triumph and showed the future is great for San Diego Imperial Swimming. A huge thanks to those who parcipated and an even greater thanks to those who gave up their me and made the event possible. Included are some photos from the event taken by one of our athlete volunteers, Chris E.

Technical Planning Vice Chair Tom Paradowski The bid packet for Long Course 2017 should be available by the HOD meeting.
