DECEMBER 2010
IDYA’s CF FUNDRASIER NIGHT Written By: Carmel Duggan
On 13th of November 2010, I was dead nervous
and excited about the CF Calendar photo shoot.
When I arrived there, some people had their pho-
to shoot already, they look fabulous with their hair
and make up done. I got my make-up and hair
done, so it was my time to get change and have
my photo shoot done. I was scared but when you
got into it, it was not that scary. The team were
fantastic!
On 27th of November, we arrived and set up the
room.. I was excited to see some men suffering
from waxing.. But I was worried about the icy
roads and snow too but everyone came!
It was great fun to see all men suffer the
waxing and it looked painful but well done to
them! The head shaving was good, some of
them looked very different! Also I was totally
amazed with three women, they are an in-
spiration to me! I can't believe that they
shaved their beautiful hair. BIG well done to
them! Also seeing my father get his beard
and hair shaved was emotional! I never saw my father's face so naked before in
my life! He looks so different! We sold many calendars and raised a lot money at
that night. The night was brilliant and I hope everyone enjoyed the night as much
as I did.
We have raised €5,200.00 so far! Our fundraising is still open . Please do donate
it, I doesn’t matter how big or small the donation is. We do appreciate your sup-
port for CF and IDYA. You can donate on-line, www.mycharity.ie/event/idya
The IDYA Boards and staff would like to say thanks for your support . We do appre-
ciated this and make sure that you carry on with your support for 2011! The Irish
Deaf Youth Association would like to say thanks to our special main sponsorship -

Better Together Awards On 25th of November 2010, The IDYA got shortlisted for the video competition for the
“The Wheel”. The competition is named, “Better Together Awards”. Also the Irish Deaf So-
ciety got shortlisted as well. We met lots of people from the different organisations. We
watched loads of videos from the different organisations. The IDYA wasn’t selected as
winner of the best videos. It is a pity but we were delighted that IDYA got shortlisted, re-
member 210 organisations had entered.
Well did well against the other organisations and we hope to apply again next year. The
IDYA board would like to thank “The Wheel” for inviting us to get involved with their com-
petition. Check it out on the website: www.bettertogether.ie. Also you can check out our
video here!

General News
Having entered a men's team into the recent 3rd European Deaf Futsal Championships which took place in Switzer-
land from the 5th to 15th November, captain Paul O'Callaghan and his team-mates repaid IDSA's faith in them with a credible 6th place finish out of 26 countries which was made all the more impressive when you consider they fin-
ished a lowly 17th out of 20 teams in the 2007 World Deaf Futsal Championships in Bulgaria.
The boys in green had the incredible fortune to have two highly experienced futsal coaches at the helm, Brazilians Gleudson Junior Da Silva and Anderson Nunes. Their input proved to be invaluable as the Irish recorded impressive
victories in their group matches over Belarus and Cyprus, winning 8-5 and 12-0 respectively.
This was enough to see them progress onto the elimination stages where they faced Belgium in which the stakes
were high. Not only was a place in the quarter final up for grabs, the victorious team would also automatically quali-fy for the 2011 World Deaf Futsal Championships. Inspired by the devastatingly in-form Joe Watson, the boys in
green put in a stellar performance as they took the game to the wire. With nothing to separate the two sides at full time with 7 goals apiece, extra time played was played but victory could not be claimed as the final shoreline stood
at 10-10, meaning a penalty shootout was then in order.
The penalty shootout was just as dramatic as the match itself. With the score being 4-4 in Ireland's favour after the Belgian captain saw his effort beaten out by goalkeeper Ciaran Maloney, the responsibility of the last kick went to
Sean Young. In the face of intense pressure, the 16 year old displayed a cool composure beyond his tender years as
he sent his first touch of the ball of the entire game into the bottom corner of the goal, drawing a final conclusion to what was arguably the most entertaining game of the entire championship.
However the Irish could not sustain such intensity in the following match against the Russians, succumbing to their
effective combination of experience and fresh legs in the quarter finals as the match ended 13-5 in favour of our Baltic neighbours. However all was not lost as the Irish went on to defeat Switzerland 8-4 after extra time before
facing Turkey in which once again, they were unfortunately at the wrong end of a 9-1 shoreline. Upon arrival in Dublin airport, Irish goalkeeper Ciaran Maloney lauded the efforts produced by all in the Irish camp, "the attitude
shown by lads was fantastic, our spirited performances gave us a lot of confidence throughout the tournament.
To go from finishing 17th out of 20 teams to 6th out of
26 teams in the space of three years is amazing progress and gives me great pride to have been involved in this
team. Thanks must go to our coaches Anderson and Jun-ior who were instrumental."
The futsal squad would like to take this opportunity to
thank the following organisations and people;
IDSA, ISC, DDA, MDSC, LDSC and CDSC for their spon-sorship,
FAI for supplying gear, Seán Herlihy of IDSA for his hard
work. Sporting Final Futsal players for their assistance in training St Joseph's School for the use of their sports hall.
