W ITH INTERMOT having just released their exhibitor andvisitor prospectus and schedule for 2014 (Cologne,Germany, October 1st – 5th) this would generally be a time

in the biennial market cycle when the Milan show (EICMA) would bethe hot topic among vendors in Europe as the industry prepares forthe expo in November (5th-10th).

However, whilst Milan will still nonetheless see the largest broad-basedmotorcycle industry gathering of the year, and a still massive investment in vendorbooths and associated expo costs, the sad truth is that preparing this pre-EICMAedition of IDN has revealed that more parts, accessory, technical and apparelvendors than ever before have abandoned the show as marketing budgets(indeed all budgets) continue to be squeezed.

As reported in this edition of IDN, the Italianmotorcycle market, while remaining the largest inEurope, continues its relentless decline, with totalPTW sales for the full year likely to have declined tonot much more than one million units from the nearthree million recorded as recently as 2007.

The particularly acute downward pressure onmotorcycle, scooter and moped sales seen inSouthern Europe in general in the past four years has been unprecedented.Matched as it is by the pan-European decline in the sale of Japanese-mademotorcycles from the glorious peaks of years past, market sentiment as theindustry approaches EICMA, Europe’s other major general-purpose OE-drivenshows and the new model launch season, is at best muted.

As the figures released by ACEM at the end of September suggest, the bestnews headlines that anybody is able to latch onto currently are that maybe, possibly, perhaps, there are signs of a slowing in sales decline in some of thelarger countries and that, maybe, possibly, perhaps motorcycle sales are poisedto bottom-out sooner than scooters and small cc PTW units.

G iven the relative retail value of larger displacement machines for Europe’sdealer network, and the greater role their riders play in fuelling parts,

accessory and apparel sales then maybe, just maybe, 2014 might see theaftermarket leading whatever sense of recovery there is to be had – a reverse ofwhat has been seen in historic market decline/growth cycles.

There is a received wisdom in the motorcycle industry that when times arehard and new unit sales in decline, aftermarket parts and accessory sales prosper, relatively speaking, as consumers delay new model spending in preference forincreasing used model ownership longevity.

In parallel with this, another early indicator of any pending recovery in theindustry is used unit values and dealership workshop revenues.

Whilst there is no question that service diaries remain full, and that workshopprofits have been the primary way in which most motorcycle dealerships(franchised and independent) have been able to keep the lights on, the storywhere used motorcycle values is concerned remains inconsistent.

There does not yet in this painfully extended downturn appear to have beenany evidence of the so-called received wisdom giving buoyancy to parts andaccessory sales, and with youth unemployment across all of Europe, but especially

in Southern Europe, now threatening to leave us with an entire lost generationof consumers to fuel the spending median of our mid-40s demographic, it isgoing to take an awful lot of “urban mobility” to dig us out of this hole.

In addition to being shocked at the number of parts and accessory vendorsand brands who have abandoned their traditional investment at Milan, so farthis season it is also striking that new product research and design also appearsto have stalled.

I t may well be that the rather more trade-oriented, large displacement, technical, and international environment that INTERMOT delivers will see theindustry wearing its game-face twelve months from now, but I have to say thatour canvass for product innovation in advance of this year’s Milan show has

yielded thin pickings.Congratulations to those companies who are

stepping up to the plate – because for sure andcertain you are the ones who will emerge from thedownturn in better shape than your competitors.

It is an established and recorded fact that in alldownturns during the last 80 plus years any surveyof market leadership, indeed of any kind of salesgrowth, achieved as market recovery sets in has

always revealed a direct correlation between the essential twin pillars ofdownturn survival and post-recession profile – namely research and designinvestment and branding and marketing spend.

When times are hard, it is all too easy for consumers and those in thedistribution channels between manufacturers and the end user to assume thatthere simply is not going to be much in the way of new and creative offers withwhich excitement and enthusiasm can be built.

I t is also all too easy for buyers to simply forget that a vendor or brand existsor is still in business. It is a sad marketing truth that if you think the sell-bydate of groceries is short, the shelf life of brand profile and values is frighteninglybrief.

Marketing and new product investments are among the easiest of spendingactivities to reduce when sales are down, but by far the most difficult and mostexpensive to restore when market conditions are better. They are both falseeconomy and predicated on the assumption that there is no business to be done- but that is not true.

Nearly one in ten of EU citizens of riding age either own at least one orroutinely have access to at least one motorcycle or PTW of some kind, and theevidence in Europe is that the miles being ridden daily, weekly, monthly andannually remains high.

DAINESE has announced it willbe working with BMW Motorradto develop motorcycle safetyclothing for the Germanmotorcycle manufacturer. Thestarting point for the jointproject will be Dainese’s D-AirProtect system, which will bedeveloped into fully integratedinflatable protectors in riderwear for BMW owners. The first product in development

is the DoubleR RaceAir one-piece leather suit with D-Airracing protectors. Designedexclusively for use on racetracks, the suit is due to be launched atthe international EICMAmotorcycle show in Milan inNovember, following BMWMotorrad completing testing inMunich. This will be followed by thedevelopment of the Dainese

Dainese and BMW in joint protectiveclothing development project

B MW Motorrad used thecar-centric FrankfurtInternational Motor

Show to launch its electric maxi-scooter – the C evolution. Theproduction version of the electricscooter made its debut at the2013 Motor Show, alongside thenew BMW i8 electric sports car.

This latest scooter from BMW joinsthe two conventional models from thecompany; the C 600 Sport and C 650GT. However, rather than the petrolengines of the two existing models, theC evolution is powered by a drivetrainswingarm with l iquid-cooledpermanent magnet synchronousmotor via a toothed belt and ringgearing. The rated power output is aclaimed 11kW, with a peak output of35kW. This is said to enable theC evolution to achieve a top speed of120km/h (electronically limited).

A stand-out feature of theC evolution is its reversing aid. It isenabled via a control on the lefthandlebar. With the activation buttonpressed, the C evolution can be

reversed at no more than walking paceto make manoeuvring easier.

The 8kWh capacity of the air-cooled, lithium-ion, high-voltagebattery provides a predicted range ofup to 100 kilometres before it needsto be charged from any domesticmains supply, with a full charge takingaround four hours.

T he C evolution also has a form ofenergy regeneration that has

never been seen before on a single-track vehicle. Recuperation takes placeautomatically both when coastingwith the throttle closed and whenbraking. Riders can set their preferredmix of dynamic performance andefficiency by selecting from four ridemodes. In Road mode riders have attheir disposal maximum acceleration, approximately 50 percent energyregeneration when coasting and fullregeneration when braking. In Eco Promode acceleration and thereforeenergy consumption are restricted, while the maximum possible amountof energy is recuperated. Sail modesuppresses recuperation while

coasting, allowing the C evolution toglide along virtually free of any brakingeffect when the throttle is released.Dynamic mode combines fullaccelerating power with a high degreeof recuperation.

The C evolution no longer has amain frame in the conventional sense. The central component is the batterycasing made from diecast aluminium, which has a steering head supportmade from steel tubing attached to itat the front and, at the rear, the single-sided swingarm as well as a rearframe, also made from steel tubing.

Wheel location at the front ishandled by an upside-down

fork with 40mm stanchion tubes and120mm of suspension travel, whereasthe rear wheel is guided by the single-sided drivetrain swingarm. Suspensionand damping at the rear are performedby a directly controlled spring strutpositioned on the left-hand side withadjustable spring preload. Suspensiontravel here is 115 millimetres.

The C evolution rides on a five-spoke diecast alloy wheel at the front,size 3.5 x 15in, and a 4.5 x 15in rearwheel.

As with all BMW Motorrad vehicles, the C evolution comes equipped withABS disc brakes, and further ridersafety is offered by the Torque ControlAssist (TCA) traction control, whichworks in a similar way to theAutomatic Stability Control feature onBMW motorcycles with combustionengines. TCA limits the motor’s torquedepending on the slip at the rearwheel.

T he new BMW scooter features a‘split face’ extending across the

upper section of the front cowl, acharacteristic BMW Motorrad designtrait that gives the two-wheeler ahighly distinctive and dynamicappearance from the front.

The trademark styling of BMWMotorrad Design is also reflected inthe twin-tipped spoiler on the frontcowl and the boomerang-shapedfloating panels in the front side trim.At the rear of the model there is anintegral helmet compartment.

B Y the time you read this edition ofInternational Dealer News, the all-newAIMExpo at Orlando, Florida, will either be

about to happen very soon, be currently takingplace (October 16th - 20th 2013), or have takenplace already.Either way, the cycle of domestic US

powersports industry expo discontent that gaverise to the AIMExpo project, and the panic that thenew show's announcement and inexorable marchtowards apparent success triggered at AdvanstarInc., the company that has owned and operatedthe 'Indy' Dealer Expo, appears to have driven'Indy' towards its final death throes. After multiple versions of their response to the

new rival came and went, the latest twist in thisparticular example of self-destruction comes withAdvanstar's announcement not only of yet anotherchange of date, but also now a change of venuetoo. In the past the company has consistently

insisted that, of all places, Chicago would be oneof the very worst host cities in which to stage theonce pre-eminent domestic US powersportsindustry trade show, but their latest news isindeed of a move for Dealer Expo to thenotoriously expensive, rigidly unionised andexhibitor-unfriendly embrace of Chicago'sMcCormick Place. What is more, having seen AIMExpo defy

Advanstar's historic insistence that 'sun-belt'venues were death for the business focus oftrade show attendees by successfully attractingnearly 400 exhibitors (and counting) to thegentle climes of Florida in the Fall, Advanstar hasseen fit not just to move 'Indy' even furtherNorth, but swap February for December!Slated for December 5th - 7th 2014 (marking

a near two-year gap since the last and muchcriticised Dealer Expo in February 2013) USindustry reaction to the move(s) has been almostuniversally hostile; indeed the widespread

scuttlebutt is that if AIMExpo #1 makes areasonable first year splash, then the chances ofthere being a 'next' Dealer Expo at all, anywhere atanytime, will be very much in the balance.

SPRINT Filter, which claims to be theworld’s oldest air filter manufacturer, ismanufacturing the waterproof P08 WP airfilter for use on naked bikes and customapplications. The patented Sprint Filter P08 WP air filterreceives a special treatment that makes itwaterproof. The technology used in thefilter is the same as that of the Sprint FilterP08 air filter (which has been used on LandSpeed Record bikes at Bonneville) but issubjected to a procedure with a specialPTFE treatment. This treatment prevents itfrom getting water-logged in heavy rain andthe water then being drawn into the bike’sengine. The filter material is 80 microns polyester, composed of wires with a diameter of fivemicrons, that allows a claimed doubling ofthe airflow and a higher filtration powercompared to any other sport air filter. The range of direct intake filters is made upof conical and cylindrical filters availablewith different inclinations and angles, andthey can be fitted on carburettors orthrottle bodies from 32mm flange diameterto 70mm flange diameter.

GIVI has widened its range of waterproof soft bagswith the introduction of a new range of bags, whichfeature high visibility elements and new materials. The bags have a navy-type closure system (they canbe rolled up to make the bag more compactdepending on its content) and a general purposemounting kit to fix them to a bike.

plastic support to help them keep their shape evenwhen empty.

The WP407 is a new Givi roll bag that has acapacity of 30 litres. It can be attached to other bags,or if used alone it should be preferably placed on theback of the saddle or on the luggage rack. It includesa shoulder strap and two elastic straps for securelyfastening it to the bike.

A second smaller option is the WP406, which canbe used as a saddlebag or as a tank bag. It has a 20-litre capacity, a shoulder strap and four fasteningstraps.

The final new item are a pair of WP405 side bags, with a combined capacity of 50 litres. The bags canbe used as throw-overs using a central fasteningbetween the two bags, which is adjustable withVelcro straps. However, Givi suggests it is best thatthe bags be used with pannier frames.

FORCEFIELD has expanded its range of riderprotection with the introduction for 2014of four new pieces.

The new Airo Vest featuresCE approved back and chestprotectors built into a zipfronted sleeveless vest. Theremovable back and chest armouris made from a mixture ofNitrexEvo and M15, which is saidto combine high levels of impactshock absorption with a low profileand flexibility, while beingbreathable and havingRepeat Per formanceTechnology (RPT) to ensurecontinued and consistent protectioneven after multiple impacts.

The back protector within theAiro is secured in place when beingworn with a height adjustable waistband that allows the wearer to fine-tune the position for fit.

Coolmax Extreme is used in the construction ofthe vest part of the Airo to draw moisture quicklyaway from the wearer’s skin. It is available in sizessmall, medium, large and x-large.

The aim behind the design of Forcefield’s Bladeback protector was to make it as light and thin aspossible. This is achieved by the use of a very simplelayered design using Forcefield’s shock absorbingmaterial NitrexEvo in an open system, which allowsit to move free of obstruction from stitching andbinding, creating a highly flexible and comfortableback protector that 3D moulds to the rider’s bodyshape. Comfort is helped by a series of vent channelson its underside.

As with all Forcefield protectors the Bladeincorporates (RPT), along with fully adjustable waistand shoulder straps to ensure the optimum fit.

Sizes the Blade is available in are x-small, small, medium and large.

The latest version of the Pro L2K EVO backprotector is the result of 10 years of productdevelopment. Made from NitrexEvo, which is a high-tech shock absorbing material, the Pro L2K EVO back

protector is designed to be soft, flexible andcomfortable, while still providing

maximum impact protectionand conforms to and

exceeds the CE test EN1621-2Level 2.

NitrexEvo provides RPT and 3Dmoulds to closely fit the contoursof the rider’s back. The Pro L2K EVO is constructed

in multiple layers that are stitchedwith Kevlar thread for increasedstrength and durability and

perforated in such a way asto allow partial movementof the inner layers. This

movement has a dual purpose, tomake the protector morecomfortable by allowing it to mouldto the wearer’s body shape and toallow air through the multipleper forat ions to prov ideventilation.

Fully adjustable shoulder straps and double waistadjustment ensure a correct fit for different bodyshapes and sizes, and it is offered in men’s sizessmall, medium and large and women’s sizes mediumand large.

The range of new protectors from Forcefield iscompleted by the Elite chest protector. The CEapproved protector has been designed to be as thinand flexible as possible while offering protection forthe sternum and chest, yet still being easily wearableunder a jacket or race suit.

Like other protectors from Forcefield, the Elite usesthe RPT NitreEvo in its construction, and has multiplevents and sculpted channels for rider comfort, whilethe four-point elasticated harness is fully adjustableand can be removed if not needed. Sizes availableare small/medium, and large/x-large.

BC Battery Controller has launched what itis claiming to be the world’s first everuniversal charger for lead-acid and LiFePo4batteries.Lithium batteries are gaining in popularity, but it’s neither efficient nor safe to chargeand maintain them with traditional lead-acid chargers (traditional or smart), as theycould damage the battery and endanger theuser. However, BC Battery Controller’s newBC Duetto is an all-in-one smart charger

with two specific algorithms for lead-acidand LiFePO4 12V batteries. The unit features two different chargingprogrammes, lead-acid mode and LiFePO4mode. The programme selection is easy andintuitive with an innovative ‘Easy Plug-inSystem’, which just requires the user to putthe clamps together and to connect thedevice to the power supply to switch fromlead-acid mode to LiFePO4 mode or viceversa. The active charging mode is shown

on a LED bar, and the last selected optionwill always be held in memory for laterusage. The lead-acid charging mode features anautomatic eight-step charging and testingprogramme, which allows it to recoverdeeply discharged batteries (starting from1.5V), recharge, desulfate and maintain allkinds of lead-acid 12V batteries (includingsealed, VRLA, AGM and gel batteries) andeven to recognize defective batteries, whichare no longer able to retain the charge. As a LiFePO4 charger, BC Duetto executes aseven-step algorithm which allows a fastand efficient charging of lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, and charge balancingbetween the battery cells and maintenanceof an optimum state of charge even for longperiods. Batteries are monitored by the internalmicroprocessor during the whole chargingprocess, allowing the user to keep thedevice always connected, even for longperiods.

MITAS, a member of the CGS Group, and best knownfor its line of off-road tyres, has moved into the roadmarket with the launch of its Sport Force tyre. Thenew Sport Force radial tyre will be initially availablein three front sizes and five rear sizes, and ismanufactured by Savatech in Slovenia, the latestacquisition of CGS HOLDING a.s. “The Sport Force radial tyre is the result of

intensive four years of complete in-housedevelopment work. It is based on our long-termexperience in road and racing scooter andmotorcycle tyre development, which together withthe most modern materials and some innovative

technical solutions has resulted in a very competitiveproduct,” said Bojan Rupar, Head of the motorcycleR&D Department at Mitas Business Unit Moto.Among the new technologies incorporated into

the design of the Sport Force tyres is OGT 3D (3-DOptimum Groove Technology), which is said toprevent the tread compound overheating throughthe use of optimum tread groove direction andgroove depth. SCT (Strong Carcass Technology) isclaimed to maintain the carcass rigidity at a high leveleven as the tyre wears, while finite elements analysisand a special computer-assisted simulation was usedto design the optimum tyre construction. The carcass

design is deformable to achieve the highest level ofgrip, but at the same time rigid enough to achievedriving stability. The tyre’s compound uses advanced S-SBR

elastomers, noted for their highly functionalisedpolymer chains. Mitas says that in combination withfillers and other special additives, they significantlyimprove the hysteresis in relation to elastomers/fillerand that in interaction with the tread pattern, construction and reinforcement materials, the endresult is improvement in maximum road grip in varieddriving conditions and optimised service life. The tread groove depth design of the Sport Force

follows the shape of actual tyre tread wear. In thecase of the front tyre, the groove depth in the middlesection is a little lower, then it increases in area whereabrasion of the tyre is bigger, and towards the edgeof the tread pattern it reduces again and graduallyfades to a slick tyre. Rear tyre tread depth is thegreatest in the middle section where the abrasionand also water drainage is greatest, then it graduallyreduces towards the edge and it fades to a slick tyrein its utmost section where the tyre is in contact withthe ground at the maximum lean angle and the roadgrip has to be the highest.

“portfolio” investment fund, wasfounded in 2007 to make what itdescribes long-term investments that“stand for capital and substance”.Dr. Hanno Schmidt-Gothan,

Managing Director of Perusa GmbH,and an adviser to the Perusa 2 Fundthat has undertaken the investment, said that “Schuberth is atechnologically strong company witha long history in head protection[Schuberth was founded in 1922 andintroduced its first motorcycle helmetin 1954]. We believe that the Perusaapproach [to ownership] of activeinvolvement in the growth anddevelopment of portfolio companies

will benefit Schuberth in every way -from internationalisation andinnovat ion to product iv i tyimprovements and financingstructure.”Both Schuberth and their new

owners are clearly looking to thefuture, and in particular at how thebrand can apply its “Made inGermany” engineering pedigree togrowth opportunities in 'emerging'international markets with “further

optimisation” of their “ultra modernproduction processes” and expansionof “our technological competitiveedge” as clear priorities given theirobjectives.Peter Heine, COO at Schuberth
