INTRODUCTION

WELCOME TO THE FIRST CARTES FLUX!

Cartes Flux new media fi lm festival is proud to present the fi rst public screening at the premises of Espoo Cultural Centre, Louhisali in Tapiola, Finland.

After the screening of this festival, with the kind permission of the participating Artists, Cartes Flux DVD vol 1 is set to be shown around the world, through cultural institutes, fi lm festivals and other public screenings.

This program consists of digital fi lm shorts from Finnish and International Artists. Among the selection of short fi lms there are many premieres for Finland which includes a fi lm by Jean Dupuy, a visionary of the early art and technology movement, also prominent in the 'Experiments in Art and Technology' (E.A.T.) in New York during the 1960s. To bring the current new technology with the old, Cartes Flux also gives the pedestal to younger creators. Although this program is intended for all ages, special attention has been given to make this festival especially geared towards a younger audience.

GOODBYE MR. NAM JUNE PAIK! was a message I received by e-mail at the night of 29th January 2006, this great pioneer of electronic media had left us. Since the turn of the century many great minds, talented craftsmen have left us to cope on our own. The longing which I would by no means call nostalgic but a sincere realisation that an era where historic contracts were signed and the fashion of building reality as we still know it today had passed.

As a reply to my open call to the new media fi lmmakers I received a myriad of fi lms depicting and mirroring this very change, displaying so many buildings so many internal landscapes or visions where this realisation had taken place. We are at the turn of accepting a great change, we all have new tools within our reach to grasp this somehow altered reality we are in. We have all the knowledge developed by the previous generations still available for us; how do we want to preserve it, what do we want to use it for?

Still there are also things unchanged: the urge to interact with the world, feeling of friendship, sadness, joy, togetherness, belonging, sharing, also with all critical aspects present. The leading role of a human character, human emotions and the societies we live in, have not yet been replaced by those of machines, abstraction or technology as a focal point of storytelling. The fashion of how to tell a good story may have found new formalities and as such developed new techniques for telling, but the stories are only complete when the audience brings the virtual world into the actual one, combining their own reality with the one perceived from the audio-visual screen. This multidirectional movement is one of the keys for the programof Cartes Flux vol 1.

Please enjoy!

THE WORKS ARE situated, both formally and narratively, in the terrain between short fi ction and advertisements. They examine the differences and interactions between the two: the effects of the moving-image tradition and the language of fi lm on advertising; and the use of narrative strategies and means of expression from adverts in drama.

ME/WE is about balancing individual identity and about control.

OKAY uses a single on-screen persona and various voices to consider the shifts, desires, and inhibitions of the ego within a sexual relationship.

The subject of GRAY is the change in reality caused by a catastrophe, and the blurring of the boundary between ego and other. It deals with a situation in which the other cannot be excluded, because it is in the very air that is breathed.

AN ATTEMPT TO PORTRAY ... the camera is focused on the instable facial expressions of a girl, immersed in darkness.

The face refl ects different textures, sustains interferences, shocks, heartbreaks, dislocations ...submitted, thus, to our questioning and to our attacks. Uncertain and fragile, doubting the aptitude to seize upon any reality, the images decompose the body into unreadable signs, reducing its presence into convulsive pulsations...

Made with "non-professional" equipment, this "low tech" video experiment is connected to the relationship between digital video images and memory processes. As such it also puts into question the substance of these images, the traces of time, the processes of imagination.

His message could be: It´s possible to fi nd a solution for all the risks. It´s still possible to fi nd a peaceful place and what´s best, you can still feel that you can rule your world.

BUTTERFLY LOVERS is a music and dance fi lm by director Marikki Hakola.

A synthesis of the ever-popular Chinese violin concerto "Butterfl y Lovers" and choreography inspired by Chinese martial arts and modern dance, the fi lm is an imaginative interpretation of the ancient Chinese fairy tale - "A Love Story of Liang Shan Bo and Zhu Ying Tai".

The fi lm features violinist Takako Nishizaki, conductor James Judd, choreographer and dancer Dou Dou, dancer Ding Yue Hong and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

TRANSIT

"TRANSIT" is a spiritual (auto)portrait in time and space. An internal journey to which stations are connected as visions and produce some kind of meditation.

"Transit" is not constructed on linear action or a traditional story-board. The selected scenes come out from an inner necessity based on meditative thinking about our physical presence from a spiritual viewpoint.

The scenes fl owing one after another can be seen as equivalent to the steps of a transcendent search. This also explains the title of the fi lm which can be interpreted both ‘horizontally‘ and 'vertically'.

TRUST

VIERAILU - A VISIT

15:00 min. 2004

THE IDEA TO "TRUST" IS inspired by a scene in "Deliverance" where four canoe companions are carrying a dead hillbilly. Though this fi lm is rather disturbing, the scene I am referring to is, in itself, a very beautiful one. I wanted to use a "carry scene" like this in my own work.

"Trust" is not a commentary to "Deliverance",it is merely an esthetical appropriation.

When a person is being carried, whether during a rescue, in play or in a ritual, a feeling of kinship and communion evolves amongst those who are carrying. The person being carried can only trust that she is in good hands.

In my fi lm I wish to convey that trust involves the duality of vulnerability and strength. Trust strengthens the bonds and gives a sense of security, confi dence and reliance. At the same time it makes you extremely vulnerable if the expectations and convincement is lost. "Trust" is about this fi ne balance. We are presented with four young women in a snow-clad forest. They are wandering around in exploration, perhaps of each other. Their undertakings appear almost like a ritual. This might be a situation of severity or perhaps it is just a game.

A VISIT IS a short documentation of a 7 year old American girl living in a small town. Me and my brother visited her grandparents and she happened to be there. She wanted to sing for us. I taped her singing songs she had learned by heart from the Music Television. Suddenly she started to dance and went on convincing us that she really had talent and charm.

At the same time it might appear tragic to the viewer, because it becomes clear that she doesn’t comprehend what she is singing about and that her dance moves are actually sexual gestures perfectly copied from the adult world in the music videos.

THIS TAPE was made with Montreal action/abstract painter Graham Cantieni for a special event in honor of his retirement from the function of Professor of Visual Arts at the University of Quebec in Three Rivers where he taught since the ‘80s. With the help of a miniature surveillance camera, about the size of a lipstick, which was fastened to the hand of the artist while he painted, the video presents the point of view of the paint-brush during Cantieni’s creative process. Brush stroke after brush stroke, the painting emerges in all its texture and physicality, abstract and palpable, to the minimal drone music of NY intermedia composer Phill Niblock which Cantieni specifi cally invited to participate for this project.

Based on a collaborative concept by

Cantieni, Niblock and Liberovskaya.

13 BUILDINGS

5:53 min. 2005

13 BUILDINGS is a narrative video that refl ects on the evaporative nature of memory and our hopes and ideas towards a journey home. The lanes of traffi c have dissolved between the many places that I have lived and this work represents a coming to terms with that natural space between. That transience, that decade of movement has afforded both opportunity and loss, and I am interested in creating work that describes the social, political and personal dynamics of this interaction.

In 13 Buildings, locative habitats become the topic of a conversation between two people united as friends but who are philosophically opposed.

SELF PORTRAIT at surface & soundscape / geomorphic visualizations at depth, Parkfi eld M 6.0 Earthquake 24 September 2004.

At-depth sound recordings of the fi rst four minutes twenty-two seconds of a recent California earthquake intercalate with a video portrait from the seismic fi eld. A face appears and then melts into arrays of visualizations, which derive from Parkfi eld seismicity in VRML format.

'Silky', if visualizations become like a second skin, inside a phenomenology of datasets. Shoot the video onsite and then edit it inside a context of interlacing geomorphic animations. The velocities register as pulsations like rolling thunder. Finding self, losing place: losing self, fi nding place -- an oscillation crosses the screen center, x over face.

A PRACTICE OF ORGANIC RE-DESIGN that aims to stimulate thought and dialogue about the progressive relativisation of natural forms of life as a result of techno-biological evolution. The "Quasi-Objects" cycle, initiated in 2003 and still in progress, is composed of photographic and videographic materials generated with the assistance of 3D modeling, animation and rendering software.

In my earlier works consideration had been already directed at the process of complexifi cation of contemporary universes of Sense, focusing attention on possibilities for chronicling semantic shifts intervened in the system of subjects/objects.

Q.O. continues on the same research path, processing its synthetic-combinatory genesis as operative advantage within a practice of "organic re-design". Q.O. regards the meaning of Life in terms of a real and autonomous process disjoint from any specifi c material manifestation, as transient output of an operative practice.

rue de Rivoli, Paris.

INNER POND is a bent horizontal split screen where the seam is the essence, the surface without extent − the line, the meeting − to which everything relates.

The joint bares witness to the rectangular origin of the image. Two journeys fi lmed at night, an abstract landscape of fugitive colour memories in a tranquil self-referring meditation over surface, light and colour. The colour and being of drowning.

The sound is a compilation of several manipulated sounds, among others the scratching from an old LP-record and "If Ye Love Me" by T. Tallis, reversed and stretched. A voice sings: Save me.

SURF is a short fi lm of three events. A groom that chases away birds in a park that hinder the couple from having their wedding photograph taken. A photographer takes pictures of a woman sitting posed on the beach feeding a fl ock of seagulls that swoop around her and a woman further along the beach jumping through the surf of the oncoming waves. Bringing together these unrelated events; seen in a single day, jostles with notions of ceremony, composure in relation to the cameras.

UNEARTH is a collection of anonymous found S8 mm fi lm end clips from home movies rythmically edited into repeatedly modifi ed sequences, accompanied with repeating found sounds for home movies. These innocuous home-movie fi lm clips as documents of travel and family edited in this way reveal other aspects of life near to us.

SWAN SONG is a video work discussing the experience of interaction and independence, and the feeling of being rejected. The principal characters are played by two swans setting up a family. In the end one of their fl edglings is left behind. How will it get along, all alone in the big world? Swan Song is a prologue to the fairy tale The Ugly Duckling.

CARTES Centre of Art and Technology, Espoo, Finland, operates mainly within the fi elds of electronic and media art, aural and visual.

The role of Cartes is critically productive, by presenting site specifi c projects as well as 'traveling' productions it strives to challenge interdisciplinary encounters between the many actors of culture and technology.

In the new media art and design of today, the recent shift of focus from 'interactive' to 'participatory' media signals a new sensibility. Through user-centered design and technology development enlaced with media art the productions of Cartes are at the focal point of the research projects, artist installations, festivals & workshops carried out or governed by Cartes.

The challenge is to invite the audience to think, feel and act - the search for the new always involves the questioning of the status quo of existing models and practices.

CARTES Centre of Art and Technology, Espoo, was established in 1989 by the City of Espoo, Helsinki University of Technology and Sibelius Academy.
