The Brand

What isa“brand?”Abrandencompassesallaspectsofacompany,productorservice– the

name, logo, typefaces, colours andadvertising slogans are themost visual aspects, but the

brandalsoincludesthewholeexperience–everythingthatcomestogethertoformimage

and reputation.ForEmilyCarrUniversityofArt+Design,thisexperience includeseverything

fromwhat’sshowing inagallery,tohowthetelephonesareanswered,tothe locationofthe

campus.Theall-encompassingbrandaffectsthewaypeoplefeelandrespondwhentheythink

ofourUniversity.

EmilyCarrhasbecomeaninternationallyrecognizedinstitutionforartanddesigneducation.We

arestrivingtocreateandmaintainapowerful,recognizableandconsistentbrand.Buildingand

maintainingthebrandbyadheringtoourstandardsiseveryone’sjob.

The name – official and noT-so-official

EmilyCarrhasalonghistoryofnamechanges.In1925the

VancouverSchoolofDecorative+AppliedArtsopenedits

doorstoaspiringpaintersandvisualartists.In1933,thename

becameVancouverSchoolofArt:DecorativeandApplied.In

1978,wewererenamedEmilyCarrCollegeofArt,andshortly

afterthat,EmilyCarrCollegeofArtandDesign.Thenext30

yearsincludedtwostatuschangesfromCollegetoInstitute

toUniversity.

Withourmostrecentchangeto“University”,wewantedto

standardizewhatthecolloquialnameoftheschoolshould

be.Itwasagreedthatwesimplifyourname,embraceour

“roots”andcelebratethecreative,freespiritthatthisinsti-

tutionwasnamedforandbeknownfirstandforemostas

“EmilyCarr”withthesecondaryemphasison“Universityof

Art+Design”.

WhenreferringtotheUniversityinspokenorwrittenform,

“EmilyCarr”isourstandard.Pleasedonotuseacronymssuch

as“ECU”or“ECUAD”.Inlegaldocuments,ourfullname,

“EmilyCarrUniversityofArtandDesign”shouldbeused.When

writingorspeakingformallyabouttheUniversity,ourfull

nameshouldbestatedfirstandforeveryinstancethereafter

TheEmilyCarrlogohas2elements:thewordmark(text)andtheaccompanyinggraphic(wire

bundle). In theEmilyCarr logo, thegraphicelement is designed tobechangeable– the idea

beingthatthelogowillcontinuetoevolve,therebyremainingcurrent,relevantandinteresting.

As a simple example, the wire could be changed to a camera lens when promoting the

photographyprogram.Pleasedo not replace the item yourself,theimagerywillbeatthesole

discretionoftheUniversity’sdesignoffice.

Therearetwoconfigurationsofthelogo:averticalversion

wherealltheelementsarestackedandahorizontalversion

wherethegraphicandthewordmarkareside-by-side.

Bothversionsareequallyacceptabletouse–pleaseusethe

mostappropriateforyourlayout.
