Getting Started: Classroom Engagements

The Perfect IB PersonIdea: In groups of 3 or 4, have students trace the outline of

one person onto large rolled paper. Once drawn, the group is asked to use words, pictures, symbols and colours to decorate the person and represent how this person shows each of the learner profile attributes. Groups them have the chance to share their “perfect person” with the rest of the class.

Example: A heart may represent kindness, a brain may demonstrate conscience, etc.

Blog it!Idea: As students start to recognize the identified Learner

Profile attributes in literature, ask them to highlight evidence they see of these behaviours in each other, as well as those they see in the news or other media sources. Establish a blog that gives students a chance to post and reflect upon their findings.

Here is an example….

Could this be a provocation for a discussion about Learner Profile attributes?

Flower PowerIdea: Pre-cut flower petals out of poster paper (the larger,

the better). Try to ensure they can be placed around a center piece without too much overlap. In groups of 3 or 4, students are asked to decorate a flower petal that represents one of the virtues. The end becomes a collaborative visual display filled with “kid-friendly” descriptions and examples of how the learner profile can be demonstrated in school.

Caught!Idea: Display photographs of each student in the class. Create

a moveable bulletin board which allows students to highlight evidence they see of other students demonstrating the Learner Profile attributes. In essence, they are “catching” each other being kind, showing principled behaviours, or being an inquirer, etc. A note could be completed to explain the situation then it could be displayed for all to share.

Eg. I caught Avery being caring when she was taking turns on the swing outside at recess.

Children’s Literature and the Learner Profile1. Choose a children’s book that interests you and a partner

or small group. 2. Identify the learner profile attribute(s) that are evident in

your story. 3. Brainstorm a learning experience/activity that could

engage children in understanding the profile attribute in connection with the literature. How could you use this in a captivating way?

4. Prepare an engaging way to share your ideas with the group
