Hello and welcome to the new edition of The Ideal Bathroom magazine.

In this issue, we’ll be introducing you to some new and exciting developments in our marketing strategy, which we think will really help you to grow your bathroom business in the coming year.

Read all about our new customer incentive that’s launching in April, where you could qualify for a luxury holiday to Dubai – find out how to register on page 12. And if you’ve not yet used our fantastic new

promotional publication – Ideal Offers – which is designed to help you generate extra sales, now’s your chance! Find full details on page 16.

You’ll already have seen the new look of our industry recognised Big Yellow Price Guide that came out in January – and the feedback has been great so far. This more user friendly style

with a consistent look and feel is the kind of change you’ll see being rolled out across all of our communications with you in 2015 – so watch this space!

We also have a new feature in this issue, “Looking into …”, which reports on current industry trends and takes views from retailers in the bathroom business. Of course, you won’t want

to miss the established favourites like the Buzz, What’s New at Ideal Bathrooms, John Bagshaw’s Column and Corporate Profile, which features Shades (and their rather nice new

manufacturing facility!). And our Market Focus feature delves into Mira’s state-of-the-art showering technology – meet their new MD, Liz Hazeldene, in “Who Is ….?” on P23.

Together with our supplier partners, we are doing everything we can to help you kick-start 2015, and we hope to be able to supply you with the tools throughout this year

that will deliver success, both for your business and ours.

Yours,

Danielle LillisCommercial Director - Ideal Bathrooms

them. Engaging with consumers and the trade is vital to uphold brand values and is a key factor in modern customer communication.

I see showering continuing to grow because of the pace of life and the aspirational look and technological advances in showers.

On the wider front we will see more on energy saving and on the personalisation of equipment with intelligent control systems. As this becomes more mainstream, then prices of technology items will become more affordable and therefore increasingly popular again – but 2015 will be a little soon for this.

Bathroom furniture is the fastest growing category of bathroom product and there are many really good furniture products available now. For us, as distributors, this means the challenge of greatly increased stockholding and handling because of the SKU’s. I expect this to be a differentiating factor in 2015/16 for distributors.

4. you have identified a radical upgrade in your marketing and communication strategies. why did you feel this necessary and how does that benefit customers?

A: Every business needs to adopt a modern interface with its customers and today there are so many different levels and types of communication. Just look at the explosion in social media. It is important to move with the times and to have an accessible, user-friendly

image across the whole communication platform.

We went back to basics in a thorough review of our image and our communications and identified the correlation between the company name and the company’s goals i.e. “That’s Ideal” – a phrase which sums up our business ethos. It’s all about being easy to do business with and efficient in our service to you.

Our customers are at the heart of our strategic planning and we know and remember our place in the channel is to help our customers.

We looked at our publications and ascertained which were working to best effect, at our promotions, our service – and just about everything else.

And the result is a new look and a renewed customer focus. 5. The last 12 months have seen two people at Ideal Bathrooms achieve their 25 years’ service and a third reaches this milestone in july, you must be very proud of this?

A: Good businesses depend on their people. They are loyal because they are happy in their jobs and careers. We are pleased to see our people advance both personally and in their careers with us. We believe it is our people who set us apart – they live and breathe our business for us. Looking back over 25 years we are proud of what we have done for our people and what they have undoubtedly done for us. We celebrate their dedication as they have been instrumental in Ideal Bathrooms’ success.

1. hot on the heels of the Scottish referendum, we now have a general election on the horizon. what are your hopes for this election and what would you like politicians to put into their manifestoes?

A: First and foremost I would like to see some practical initiatives for growth. Whilst some schemes have been introduced to stimulate greater activity in the housing market, it is still true to say home ownership remains out of reach for many. I would, therefore, like to see more done for the house building sector to fuel the economy by providing sustainable, reasonably paid jobs. I would also welcome plans on how the country is going to cope with the demands of an ageing population and how any government plans to tackle the problems of a greatly outdated transport infrastructure. 2. as the experts report an improving economy and predict a better year for the Uk, how do you see the prospects for the business of bathrooms in 2015?

A: 2015 will remain a tough market with challenges from the Internet and from unbranded low price product. Our role as distributors is to help our customers by advising of opportunities and to give you the tools to help you capitalise on them. As I frequently say “It’s by helping you grow that we grow too.”

The bathroom industry needs to be at the forefront in its appeal to new and emergent markets (such as inclusive design) and to be forward thinking in its offer. 3. from which brands and/or product groups do you anticipate strongest growth? and why?

A: The brands which will grow successfully are those which invest in their marketing and their products. Brands who get closer to their customers will fare better that those which are content to let the market do their growing for

ThaT’S Ideal—We have also created a new, more dynamic brand image. The concept is based on the word ‘Ideal’, defined as ‘a standard of perfection or excellence’, and this of course is our aim in all our communications with you. The branding highlights our service and our desire to remain your number one bathroom distributor of choice, providing you with the marketing platform to deliver growth for you and, therefore, us.

And although our core values remain unchanged we want to re-establish that we have the resources, and desire, to assist in the progress of your business – in short to be your ‘ideal partner’ – a phrase which typifies our business rationale.

It’s all summed up in the new corporate identity ‘That’s ideal’. The ‘ideal’ concept will become an integral element of our future marketing – reinforcing the whole ethos of our approach to our business. The word ideal is intrinsically linked to the company and we will continue to build on this association in the future.

Our sales office manager Helen Webb is a key member of the Ideal Bathrooms team and well known to most customers. She recently reached a significant milestone, with the completion of 25 years service for the company. Considering today’s fast paced job market, it is an increasingly rare occasion when someone reaches such a memorable anniversary.

Her highlights over her time with Ideal Bathrooms have been the birth of her son 18 years ago and, on a business front, the May Ball in 2011 in celebration of the company’s 30th anniversary.

Helen has always been a key member of the team and has played an important role in the company’s success. She is a true professional – always does her job with dedication and commitment and is a pleasure to work with. She embodies all the principles that make Ideal Bathrooms the company we are.”

PeoPle To Be ProUd of—At Ideal Bathrooms we know it’s our people who define our service and are a differentiating factor in helping make your and our businesses successful, so we make sure we acknowledge the vital role people play within the company. Every year we run our Pride Awards to recognise the outstanding contributions made by individual employees in their day to day activities. These awards are judged, not only by the company’s management but also by employees’ peers and are therefore so much more appreciated by the winners.

This year’s ‘Employee of the Year’ was won by Purchasing Manager Nick Brown. Since joining the business, Nick has very successfully overcome a number of challenges from staff changes to managing a greatly expanded stock portfolio. Nick continues to improve and motivate his team to achieve their targets and is always ready to help and assist colleagues even if this is not directly relevant to his department. It is of great credit to Nick that the whole of his department were individually nominated for Pride Awards.

Winner of the ‘Customer Service Excellence’ Award was Sales Coordinator, Steve Foster. Steve was commended for continually looking at ways to improve in his role and his success in building excellent relationships with the V&B customer network. His efforts have received highly positive feedback from customers and colleagues.

Ideal Bathrooms Operations Director Kim Kirby-Earnshaw comments “Winning a Pride Award is a superb achievement especially because they are based on the recommendations by colleagues in the company. The Pride Awards are the company’s opportunity to show that we really appreciate those who consistently go the extra mile in carrying out their roles.“

“His performance was quite exceptional” says John Bagshaw. “Jordan epitomises what Ideal Bathrooms is all about. He is conscientious, committed and always wanting to help customers – a comment reinforced by his customers and colleagues. He truly represents our customer focused service and is an ”ideal Partner” to his customers.”

aT home wITh ShowerlUXWith a rise in new-build homes, prefitted showers and bathrooms, and increasing demand for en-suites, showers are increasing in popularity - great news for showering brand Showerlux. Focusing on meeting the needs of customers throughout the UK, Showerlux’s flexible range of shower solutions is proving popular with the growing UK housing market, thanks to its design-conscious and fitter-friendly options.

Minimalist design is still very popular, due in part to the average bathroom shrinking in size. Gone are the days of chunky frames, thick trays and cumbersome handles. Instead, consumers are looking for showers that complement the space available.

The experts in luxury shower enclosures

Linea Touch Single Door QuadrantGlide Slider

Showerlux’s response to this is its Linea Touch range. It offers contemporary, chrome effect frames and a lower profile tray, while clear 8mm safety glass creates a fuss-free design that works in any setting.

To create the illusion of space, frameless panels and space saving sliding doors are the perfect solution. As well as offering off-set quadrant units, bi-fold and pivot doors when space is at a premium, the single or twin Glide quadrants - for use with radius corner trays - maximise space whilst the user is in the shower.

The Glide range features slimline aluminium frames and an easy glide roller system. In addition, all enclosures offer a lifetime

guarantee and feature Glass Shield as standard. And for the fitter, Showerlux also offers a number of ancillary components to simplify fitting even in the most awkward situations.

Over the next few years, the demand for showers is expected to increase. The requirement for en-suites and well-designed bathrooms will continue to develop, especially with the rise in watersaving requirements that a shower can offer. In addition, customers will also start looking to personalise these spaces in order to introduce their own individual preferences to the bathroom. It’s a great time for the shower market and Showerlux are excited to be a part of it.

Moores Furniture Group is thrilled to announce the launch of several new and exciting range colours, door finishes and cabinet styles within its Shades offering. Designed to enhance the current Shades range and exceed the high expectations that have come to be associated with Shades bathroom furniture, the new ranges combine luxurious style with the practicalities of everyday life.

Moores Furniture Group, holders of the prestigious Royal Warrant, has scheduled the launch of their new bathroom furniture for spring 2015. The launch will include four new

cabinets within the Shades Modular range, which have been specifically developed in the UK to perfectly match the contemporary door colours and finishes. As with all Moores furniture, these four carefully constructed cabinets continue to maximise

space, allowing you to make the most of your storage without compromising on style and quality.

Designed and tested in-house from scratch in the UK and pulling on extensive research from the current market, the new Shades bathroom ranges offer a wide choice of colours that are the epitome of style and the perfect platform to build a sensational bathroom.

As part of the Shades manufacturing process, Moores have invested in a state of

the art spray facility and automatic polishing line specifically for high gloss bathroom components. The addition of this new facility provides Moores with the flexibility to manufacture their own doors and panels and, therefore, allows a much greater control of costs, quality and the supply chain, which in turn increases efficiency. Moores now have the ability to innovate and market test new products, adapt and react to market trends and fashions and give continuity of supply to their customers.

The door collections are supplied on an impressive cabinet, which is strong, durable and is a rigid glue and doweled product. The cabinet also has a stapled back and has minimal drill holes putting it a step ahead of its closest competition.

As part of the new Shades bathroom product launch, Moores is launching an exciting new cabinet colour. Offering complete design flexibility, the new cabinet colour has been carefully selected to complement the range of Shades doors, ensuring that the product will fit into any surrounding no matter what the taste or style. Dave Rawle, Retail Sales Manager at Moores Furniture Group, says, “We are confident that customers will love the flexibility offered by the new range of furniture, enabling them to build up a bathroom to suit their budget whilst ensuring the look and feel of the bathroom is perfect for their home. Our luxurious on-trend door colours and an increased door style offering will enhance and transform any bathroom. We are sure that you will love our new Shades ranges as much as we do. one of my personal goals is to make the environment at kohler mira challenging, rewarding and somewhere that people say is a great place to work. liz hazeldene, Managing Director

Liz Hazeldene is the Managing Director of Kohler Mira Ltd, which has 30,000 associates in 52 locations on six continents. Appointed as MD in March 2014 Liz is responsible for the growth of the Kohler Mira business in the UK, which includes Mira Showers, Rada and Kohler UK brands.

how and when did you get into the bathroom business? My career in ‘bathrooms’ began in 2002, when I joined Kohler Mira initially in Marketing. Five years later, I moved into Sales before becoming Business Director for our commercial brand, Rada, four years ago.

what were your first impressions of the bathroom industry?Customers, Specifiers, Consumers and Installers are all key influencers, so to create long-term brand loyalty requires you to understand each, in detail. Having worked previously in a consumer brand, my initial impression of the bathroom industry was “Wow, this is complex!”

how did you view the industry from the woman’s perspective? As a consumer, it is interesting to note that 83% of global spend is ‘controlled’ by women, who are the primary decision makers in 91% of new homes and 94% of home furnishings.

This offers me a unique insight into consumer behaviours, but back in 2002, it is fair to say, it appeared a male dominated industry. However, the last decade has seen the bathroom industry become more diverse and inclusive – and I am keen to play my part in continuing this shift.

what made you join kohler mira?Opportunity! Being part of a truly global organisation affords you the opportunity to progress your career in whichever direction you choose.

To become Managing Director within 12 years of joining shows that my decision was spot on – and it is a commitment I am making to everyone who works at Kohler Mira. If you want to progress your career, Kohler Mira is the place to do that.

what has been your greatest achievement in your role to date? One of my personal goals is to make the

environment at Kohler Mira challenging, rewarding and somewhere that people say is a great place to work.

what goals have you set for yourself for 2015?We achieved record sales in 2014, in what was a tough market for everyone. Our goal in 2015 is to beat that level of growth – and I am confident we have the plans, the people and products to achieve this.

who has had the biggest influence on your career so far?My Mum! She was the first person who truly believed in me and encouraged me to never give in. She was one of the most determined people I know, which is why, whenever I face what appears to be an insurmountable problem, I have the belief to beat it.

what has kohler mira been up to recently?Gosh, where to begin! We recently shared with all of our associates our plans for 2015, at a company Roadshow. Every part of the business was there, including people from Belgium, Denmark and the USA.

We also celebrated 2014, which was a record year for Kohler Mira. Last year we raised a record £50,000 to CLIC Sargent, our employee nominated charity. This is part of our Stewardship programme, for which we are seen as something of a shining light in Kohler globally – which makes me very proud.

how do you feel the industry has changed in the last 10 years? The Internet has been a real revelation for Consumers and how they choose to shop and buy. This new Omni-Channel is certainly a challenge for anyone who sells product. No longer do Consumers need to be told what to buy; they can access inspiration, help and advice in an instant – so for me, the rise of the internet has fuelled great change in the industry and will continue to do so for a few years yet.

what was your first car?A fiery red Ford Fiesta – which I used to drive around whilst listening to The Pet Shop Boys on full volume! That tells you my age, doesn’t it?

what is your most prized possession? My camper van, called Elvis. It has a quiff and it is old and scruffy but it’s a portal to great adventures. I love it! I only have to sit in it and it makes me feel happy.

Ideal Standard, leading supplier of design driven bathroom solutions, is building on its long standing partnership with Ideal Bathrooms, unveiling a brand new initiative, ensuring their comprehensive Essentials furniture range is in constant supply.

The furniture market continues to grow, with at least 3 out of 5 sales now containing furniture. In fact the UK bathroom furniture market for 2015 is estimated to be worth £92m, of which 42% is sold into the retail channel*. A powerful engine, smart features and design that makes installation a breeze – these make up the driving force behind every Mira electric shower. Today, there’s a lot of choice in the market for electric showers – but not all brands are made equal. With such high demands placed on bathrooms, installers and customers alike are wise to ask searching questions, such as whether a shower’s going to last without breaking down? How long will it take to install? Will it cope with a big family?

At Mira we spend a lot of time listening to and drawing on feedback. And we’ve made sure there’s an electric shower to suit different budgets, styles and plumbing systems. All with some very clever technology under the bonnet.

SenSI-flo™If the flow gets restricted – due to a kink in the hose or partially blocked spray plates, for example – water can sit in a shower tank and get too hot. Sensi-flo™ knows when there’s a drop in flow and immediately stops any heat getting to the element, ultimately protecting the user.

Mira Clearscale™ TechnologyUnlike competitor products all our electric showers feature Dual Element™ heater tanks.

Two separate heating elements are wound together in a coiled helix, this increases space for water to flow and gives a more even distribution of heat, reducing hotspots where limescale can build up.

having an exclusive range with the prestigious v&B brand widens Ideal Bathrooms’ portfolio and offers v&B dealers the opportunity to capture sales that would have migrated to other brands, whilst giving consumer excellent price points. rob St. Barbe, Premium Brand sales Director

The launch of the ‘Essentials by Villeroy & Boch’ collection at the end of last year introduced a new development in the bathroom market – an upper market range carrying a hugely prestigious brand name yet at surprisingly affordable prices.

As expected, response from the V&B network has been very strong indeed and has seen an excellent uptake on special display offers, with 115 new displays now installed and generating extra sales.0208 871 4028

Charlotte Kelly of H2O in Gateshead, who has the new suites on display, comments, “It’s early days yet, but the new ranges are going well so far. The new suites are opening up new market potential from a level of customer who wants the best quality at affordable prices. The V&B branding is a big bonus and gives us a superb product to sell against unbranded sanitaryware.”

She emphasises that the new Essentials by V&B collection is creating additional sales but not at the expense of their existing V&B offering.

Fezal of Bargain Bathroom Centre at Winson Green in Birmingham agrees that the introduction of a lower priced V&B product has provided a fantastic opportunity. “Being able to offer a brand which the consumer recognises at such price points makes life all the better for us,” he says. “We will certainly gain extra sales in addition to our existing V&B ranges and we get excellent service from Ideal Bathrooms on the V&B product too.”

This new feature article series focuses on topical bathroom industry issues. It will reflect your views based on interviews with a cross section of customers.

As a distributor, it is our service which is of paramount importance to you – so we conducted interviews with customers around the Country to check how we perform this key role in fulfilling your business needs. These showed just how important the distributor is to your trading operations and that you were all in total agreement that the distributor is a vital ally in your businesses.

Customers are more and more aware that the UK suffers from some poor quality imports and are learning that brand values are built up over many years and are their reassurance of quality. alan wagstaffe, Fairfield Building supplies

neXT day delIverIeS—One key point raised was regarding customer expectations. Customers are simply not prepared to wait weeks for the product. Once they have made the decision to purchase, they want it NOW and the distributor is the source of meeting that demand. If consumers have to wait, they may well change their minds.

who from—Many larger retailers and merchants still buy some of their bathroom product direct from the manufacturer, but this has declined over the years. Even then the distributor is often needed to fill gaps in the stockholding.

Simon Neal of Hazel Grove Plumbing Supplies in Cheshire says: “I do buy direct, but distributors can often offer the same price and deliver quicker.”

Alan Wagstaffe of Fairfield Building Supplies takes a different approach “We don’t buy direct at all. Frankly manufacturers can’t fulfil the distributor’s role. The distributor makes life easier – that’s their job – and Ideal Bathrooms do it very well. They know what we need in the way of service. They hold stock and deliver, and we can then look after our customers – it’s simple.”

The rIGhT BrandS—“Having the brands to suit the market is important to us too,” adds Alan “Customers are more and more aware that the UK suffers from some poor quality imports and are learning that brand values are built up over many years and are their reassurance of quality.” He points out that his showroom has a lot of Ideal Standard products, and that, with the huge stockholding Ideal Bathrooms have of Ideal Standard product, he can offer his customers the full range and he can also obtain this from a single source. “It’s a perfect marriage” he says “And because we use a lot of their product, we are always keen to take on their new product introductions.”

SeTTInG The STandard—All agree that service excellence is what makes you continue to place your business with your chosen distributor.

Brian Callow of Cu Plas Callow on the Isle of Man says, “Ideal Bathrooms are always our first call - and we rarely need a second. We need to have confidence and trust in our distributor. Ideal Bathrooms tell you how it is. They go the extra mile even for the smaller merchant. They are a benchmark company for service.”

Alan Wagstaffe brings in a more personal note “Ideal Bathrooms are a pleasure to deal with. There is never any hassle – everything is done and dusted there and then.”

David Williams of SX Heating and Plumbing agrees “We have a very good relationship with Ideal Bathrooms, especially on the contracts side, where things can be more complex. They bend over backwards and always come up with the goods. Their helpful attitude makes our job easier.”

Chris Maggs of Embassy Plumbing Supplies, in North West London, singles out the sales office for his praise, “The guys in the office really know what they are doing and they are nice to do business with. They have got it right. Not too pushy but always there when needed. Even their drivers take care, too.”

And Simon Neal confirms “Everything about Ideal Bathrooms is what a distributor should be. They know how we work and what we need. I can’t fault them at all.” He also mentions Ideal Bathrooms’ returns policy, which is a key element in his preference for Ideal Bathrooms as his chosen distributor.

meeTInG yoUr needS—Today’s distributor is the vital link between the manufacturer and the merchant. By holding huge stocks across a wide range of products, we deliver on a next day basis to virtually any corner of the country. Ideal Bathrooms have a continual stockholding of over £6 million, representing some 20,000 different product lines. We also have our own delivery fleet of 50 vehicles to ensure that we can meet your needs at all times. Today’s market is fast moving and demand is now almost instant. Your distributor is key to ensuring you can meet the needs of your customers in this changing environment.

At Ideal Bathrooms we have a history of raising moneys for charities. For 2014/2015 we have joined in with our parent company, Saint-Gobain Building Distribution, in fund raising for the chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support, with staff from all sections of the company taking part in a variety of fund raising events to raise as much money as possible for this, and other, highly worthwhile causes.

Individual fund raising events from cake sales, fancy dress days and an office tuck shop to larger organised activities raised over £6000 towards the Saint-Gobain group total of over £300,000. Ideal Bathrooms’ annual Milton Keynes office and Christmas party raffle alone raised a superb £3180.

A 55 mile sponsored London to Milton Keynes bike ride in October raised over £1,150 with proceeds split between the organisers, The British Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Macmillan Cancer Support.

This will be followed by two even more arduous bike challenges later in the year, both attempting to complete 350 mile journeys. Steve Hooley and Steve Gillespie will be joining other members of the Saint-Gobain group on a 4 day, cycle endurance ride covering 350 miles from London to the Group’s archives site in Blois, Loire Valley, France.

In a separate challenge, a team from Ideal Bathrooms will undertake 5 different rides, ranging from 50 to 100 miles each, between May and October. The October ride will repeat the 2014 London to Milton Keynes event, with a total 350 miles, again celebrating Saint-Gobain’s 350th anniversary.

“Everyone involved in events, large or small, is to be congratulated on their hard work and commitment to raising much needed funds for these admirable charities.” says Managing Director John Bagshaw.
