Page 8: IDEA: power and authority

Firstly, in The Charge of The Light Brigade, we see power and authority when the order is given for the Light Brigade, who are part of the British Army in the Crimean War, to charge on the Russian army. The words which show this are: “’charge for the guns!’ he said.” The Light Brigade were ordered to fight against guns and cannons while they were only armed with swords. The words, “Flashed all their sabres bare... sabring the gunners there” show how the battle was uneven. These orders led many of the Light Brigade to their deaths. The poet describes them going “into the valley of death.” This quote shows many of them died.

Page 9: IDEA: power and authority

The Charge of The Light Brigade makes the idea of power and

authority interesting because it shows that those in power and authority can be wrong with terrible consequences. Many of the Light Brigade died in the battle described by the poem. For example the poet says “back from the mouth of hell, all that was left of them, left of six hundred.” This quote shows that many of the six hundred did not return. It is also

interesting because the Light Brigade obeyed those in power and authority, even though they knew that the order was a bad one. For example the poet says, “Was there a man dismayed? Not though the soldier knew someone had blundered: Theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die:” This shows that they obeyed those in power, even though they knew the order was leading them to death. Tennyson suggests that this is courageous, and that we should “honour the light Brigade, Noble six hundred” for their deeds.

Page 10: IDEA: power and authority

Therefore in The Charge of The Light Brigade, and Ka Kite Bro, we see examples of how power and authority can be misused with negative consequences. This is interesting because it can take courage either to obey orders or to resist them.
