Concer t programs can be arranged in a great variety of ways; each resulting form serving a different function or highlighting a particular theme. As I began to put together the literature for this evening’s program I started
with a particular piece which I thought would be well suited for the Chorale: Mirjam’s Siegesgesang by Schubert. From there I sought to expand upon the theme of “Water” as I searched for other compositions. After considering many selections, a more particular theme of “Baptism” began to emerge. As the pieces began to fall into place, a particular order also began to emerge; a chiasmus. Finally, the program order, as you will hear tonight, was created.
To begin with, the concert is framed by two instrumental pieces played as the choir processes and recesses. The processional Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a Trinitarian Hymn petitioning God to “bind the restless wave.” Long known as “The Navy Hymn,” it has been sung for and by sailors of many nations, marked by the repeating prayer “O hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea.” The recessional Coro is the finale to Handel’s “Water Music”; also written to be performed on water. This time the central idea is not one of concern, but rather joyous festivity as Handel wrote the instrumental suites for a royal party on the Thames for King George I. As the nobility socialized on barges, fifty musicians floated behind providing party music. A far cry from the concert hall indeed!
The concert proper begins and ends with two very different settings of Miriam’s song of victory following the Hebrew exodus in which the Israelites passed through the parted waters of the Red Sea and watched as their pursuing enemies, Pharaoh and his Egyptian army were drowned as the water collapsed upon them. In response to such a miraculous deliverance, Moses and Miriam both led the people in songs of praise. Schubert wrote his setting during his final year of life, 1828. He had intended to orchestrate the work, but died before having the chance. It was modeled after the cantatas by Handel. Fittingly, the concert concludes with the finale from “Israel in Egypt”; Handel’s setting of the same scene which premiered in 1739.
Working our way in, we can see how the second and penultimate sets contrast motet settings with spiritual settings of similar ideas: (1) Psalm 29 and Wade in the Water speak of God presiding over turbulent waters; (2) Sicut Cervus and Deep River highlight the theme of longing and thirsting in connection with a river which satisfies and quenches; and (3) Valiant-for-Truth (from Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress) and Hark! I Hear the Harps Eternal concisely narrate the journey of life from man’s temporal earthly struggle, to his passing through (baptism in) the deep waters of death, unto the eternal glory awaiting him on “the other side.”
On either side of the central set are two settings taken from Bach’s chorale cantata BWV 7 on Luther’s baptism chorale Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam. The first setting is the opening chorus from the cantata for choir, orchestra, and solo violin. Throughout the entirety of the work Bach employs a “wave motif ” of four sixteenth notes followed by an eighth note. The corresponding chorale is a straight forward setting in which the instruments double the voices. In both the chorus and the chorale, Luther poetically and theologically describes and exegetes the scene of Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan by John the Baptist.
At the crux of the program two familiar settings of the hymn Ave Verum, by Byrd and Mozart respectively, surround the antiphon Vidi Aquam. The central antiphon is a chant setting of Ezekiel’s vision of water flowing from the right side of the temple which saved all who came to it (Ezek. 47:1-12). The text of Ave Verum draws on various New Testament passages which speak of the fulfillment of Ezekiel’s prophecy in the crucifixion of Christ, particularly John 19:34 and Revelation 22:1.
In structuring the selections in such a way, it is hoped that the chiastic form will allow the pieces to join forces serving as second witnesses to one another. As such, the presentation of these texts and compositions spanning thousands of years can comment on one another, showing a unity of understanding expressed in a variety of manners from cantata to oratorio, from motet to spiritual, from the Middle East to Europe to America. As you listen to the music, be reminded that most all of the repertoire on tonight’s program was never intended for the concert hall. The pieces were not written to entertain people, but rather to be entertained by people. And so we encourage you so to do. We are grateful that you have chosen to spend your evening with us; we thank you for your support of the Idaho-Washington Concert Chorale; and it is our pleasure and delight to share this great music with you. So dive in with us as we “Wade in the Water.”

David Erb is the newly appointed Fellow
of Music at New Saint Andrews College as well as the Director of Music at Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho. Prior to his recent move to the Palouse, Dr. Erb served as the Chief Musician at Trinity Church in Kirkland, Washington. He also taught at Providence Classical Christian School in Lynnwood, Washington.A long-time resident of Wisconsin, Dr. Erb received his DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, his MM in Choral Conducting from Westminster Choir College of Rider University, and his BM in Music Education from the UW-Madison. His primary mentors have been Robert Fountain, Joseph Flummerfelt, and Beverly Taylor. Additionally he has sung under the batons of Paul Salomonovich, Kurt
Masur, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Helmut Rilling.Dr. Erb has taught at Lawrence University, Bucknell University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has also taught all grade levels K-12. In addition to singing and presenting at various state and regional music conferences, Erb’s Women’s Choir at Lawrence University was chosen to sing at the 2001 Wisconsin Music Educators Conference after only its first year in existence. Along with his work in the academy, Dr. Erb has directed various community choirs and community theater productions. He has also served as a church musician for nearly twenty years. Throughout his career he has been sought after as a choral clinician for festivals, clinics, music camps, etc. Most notably, Erb was invited to teach at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s 75th Anniversary Summer Music Clinic in 2004.

Karina Brazas, soprano, is in her
final year as a Vocal Performance major at Washington State University, where she studies voice with Dr. Sheila Converse. Her recent roles include Miss Titmouse in scenes from Too Many Sopranos, Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro, and the title role in Victor Herbert’s Naughty Marietta. Karina has recently won Young Artist competitions with the Washington Idaho Symphony and the Coeur d’Alene Symphony and greatly enjoyed the opportunity to sing with those orchestras. She also regularly participates in competitions through the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), where she has placed second twice within her regional division. Her best experience was the five months she spent studying abroad in Vienna, Austria, where she studied private voice, German, and art history. In her spare time she enjoys foreign films, cooking, and the television show Arrested Development.

Chorale Member Profile
Laura McMichael has been a mainstay in the Chorale’s alto section since 1989, and for many years she has also served as the group’s house manager, arranging the front door and usher volunteers for every concert. Originally from Sandstone, MN, Laura is the youngest of eight children born to parents of Danish and Norwegian immigrant stock. Her early music activity with her family included playing the button accordion and harmonica, followed by piano lessons starting in the third grade. Laura’s first choir experience was with the chapel choir at Gustavus Adolphus College, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in English and Social Work and also played flute in the college band. After a year of social work studies at the University of Chicago, Laura moved to
Pullman in 1962, when her husband, Kirk (a bass in the Chorale), joined the chemistry faculty at WSU. In addition to raising their children Bob and Anne, Laura’s years in Pullman have brought her renown as a potter. She studied design & pottery at the University of Wisconsin and the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland during Kirk’s post-doc. and was one of the founders of A Fine Line, a fine arts and crafts cooperative in Pullman that operated for 15 years. For many years she was also a share holder and a test baker for Flourgirls Whole Wheat Flour. Laura studies organ with Jill Schneider and is the accompanist for the Trinity Lutheran Church choir in Pullman. As someone who loves to travel, a highlight of Laura’s years in the Chorale was the trip to Austria in 1992. Closer to home, summers find Laura at her float house on Lake Pend Oreille—a popular destination for family and friends. Of her Chorale experience, Laura says that she most enjoys the variety of music, the cross-section of interesting people who are members, and the satisfaction of having practiced well to help produce a beautiful performance. She especially loves the Christmas concert when St Boniface is filled with the sound of the Chorale and audience singing together.

Elena Panchenko
is oiginally from Ukraine and studied at the Moscow Conservatory where she earned her degree in piano performance, music history and music theory. She served as the Musical Director of the Penn State Opera for four years and performed the debut of two new operas, including Mrs. Satan, an opera about the life of the first woman presidential candidate, Victoria Woodhall. Working extensively as an accompanist and church musician, Elena has performed with groups as varied as a children’s dance group to such well-known musicians as Francis Orval and David Shifrin, clarinetist and Music Director of Chamber Music at Lincoln Center. In addition to Elena’s duties with the chorale, she is also the Music Director at St. James’
Episcopal Church in Pullman. Elena’s family includes her husband, Alex, WSU Math Professor and former Ukrainian rock star (as is Elena); her son Ivan, a student at UW; and their dog, Tasha.
