Why should we learn about the Older Adult (OA)?
People are working and living longer Advanced medication and new interventions
So we need.....
Higher level education To expect increasing numbers of OA’s in all
health care settings – highest consumers of health services
To manage complex cases acute and chronic To understand assessment of physical,
intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual areas
Reorientating health and aged care
The next generation of health care and aged care consumers will expect more options than those previously available.
Health and aged care programs to enable them to continue to live independently at home and in their community for as long as possible.

Nursing ‘s focus of the OA
Encourage research on aging Address cultural diversity issues with
aging Promote health and prevent disease Provide elder care resources that are
community focused and home-care based Develop nursing focused EBP Address long-term care issues Attract students to gerontology (May Wykle, RN, PhD, FAAN, FGSA, Dean of Gerontological Nursing and leader-researcher in Gerontological

Your goal in this course........
To become aware of the multiple factors which impact on the OA’s health state
How the OA presents in an altered health state
How to modify your nursing care in order to accommodate and treat the OA
Understand some of the more common OA illnesses
Define Gerontological Nursing Gerontology nurses utilise specialist
nursing knowledge and judgement to provide competent care for older people in health rehabilitation and palliative care across the care continuum
Gerontological nursing care aims to assist the older person in realising his/her highest potential through functioning as fully as possible or towards a dignified death

online, 1/3 stand up teaching, 1/3 simulation Developing an understanding and extensive nursing
