Carnegie Hall is Bringing the Arts to Life for the 23rd summer!
Carnegie Kids’ College is a summer arts and science program for children who will be entering kindergarten through 7th grade.
Kids’ College consists of three distinct tracks:
1. Classes for Grades K-1: Music, Movement & Art for Kids: three 60-min. classes 2. Morning Session for Grades 2-7: three 60-minute classes
3. Afternoon Session for Grades 2-7: two 80-minute classes
Kids’ College provides children an opportunity to expand their learning, through art and science, in a safe and nurturing environment.
The primary objectives of Kids’ College are to spark creativity and help each child
develop a love of learning through art and science.
Students have the chance to “try-out” different art forms at Kids’ College.
They may identify new skills within themselves, and at the same time develop their own
“inner” creativity. Our teaching artists and volunteers, along with the staff at Carnegie Hall, are eager to provide a learning experience that is positive, fun, and fulfilling. When kids were asked “What was your favorite part of Kids’ College?”, they replied:
“My favorite part was making stuff.” “It was fun!” “I liked making things for friends.” “I liked it when we did the volcanoes and they erupted!” “My favorite part was making new friends.” “The best part was making everything and then taking it home.”
Teaching artists enjoy their participation in Kids’ College because: “I love having a completely hands-on experience. It makes the art so much more meaningful to the kids.”

Dave Pontius was born in Texas, and graduated from Cardinal Stritch University with a degree in Education. He moved to West Virginia in 2011, and is now the Science and Social Studies teacher at Mountain View School in Monroe County. Dave loves to dig, find and explore! Lillian Posselt worked as a substitute teacher and a secretary at a primary school before retiring to Lewisburg. For the last four years, she has been active as a volunteer for Carnegie Hall and Kids’ College. Crocheting and sewing are her passions, and she would like to pass on her skills to young children. Joseph Sampson is a Math and Computer Science major at WVU. During high school he competed in the West Virginia state and national West Point Bridge Design Contest's (Engineering Encounters Bridge Contest). During his final year with the competition he placed 4th in the nation. After helping with last year’s Robotics class, he wanted to do something that had a civil engineering flavor to it. Robin Skillern is a professional artist and educator. She has her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and her undergraduate degree in visual art. She has worked with children through Carnegie Hall’s Creative Classrooms and Kids' College, Greenbrier County Schools, The New Greenbrier Preschool, and Seneca Health Services. Her pottery, painting, and beadwork have been exhibited in West Virginia, Virginia and Georgia. Susie Smead grew up on Church Street in Lewisburg in the 50’s and 60’s. She earned her degree in English Education from Marshall University, taught high school for three years in Winchester VA, and returned to Greenbrier County in 1980. Since then she has been teaching English and reading in Greenbrier County schools. She is passionate about wool and helps Debbie Rapp with her sheep farm in Renick, WV. Caroline Smith has always been a hands-on learner and she passes that on in her teaching style. She has worked with piñatas, clay, concrete, mosaic tile, paper, photography and dance. Her most current passion involves midwifery--the ultimate creative process. She also farms with her husband in Renick; they vend flowers, fruits, and vegetables at the Lewisburg Farmer's Market. Elizabeth Spangler is a Software Engineer with the Problem Determination Tools Division of IBM Corp. She earned her undergraduate degree in Math and Computer Science from VA Tech (go Hokies!) and her graduate degree in Software Engineering from North Carolina State University. Elizabeth grew up in Lewisburg and is glad to have returned home. She is very happy to be involved in activities at Carnegie Hall. Erica Spencer has many years of experience working with children in various settings, from wilderness therapy to Waldorf classroom teaching. She is passionate about the arts and enjoys knitting in her free time. Currently she lives in Knoxville TN, where she is a docent at the Knoxville Museum of Art. April Vincent is most in her element working and playing with young children. She studied Visual Art at Warren Wilson College, received a Master’s degree in Education from Western Carolina University and has been teaching elementary education, special education and art for the past decade. He wants to use his musical talents and knowledge of teaching strategies to provide a fun and valuable learning experience for children attending Kids’ College. Libby Johnson is a retired educator from Greenbrier County Schools. Growing up, she spent a great deal of time helping out in the kitchen. Her first 4-H project involved both cooking and baking, and she earned “Best Project” for her efforts. She’s been cooking and baking for family and friends ever since. She and her husband, Greg, live in Lewisburg. Emily McCourt grew up in Greenbrier County, and is currently teaching science at Western Greenbrier Middle School. She earned her degree in Forensic Science from WVU, and she has a Master’s degree in Science Education. She skates with the local roller derby. She is married to Jeremy McCourt, pharmacist for the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. Sean O'Connell is an artisan who recently relocated to Alderson, W.V. from upstate New York. He has created work using all types of materials including wood, metal, natural fiber and bone, but clay is his preferred expressive medium. Intro to the Universe (1pm) Grades 3-7 only Instructor: Dave Buhrman How old is the sun? How big is the universe? What is the name of that group of stars, or constellation? You will find out what astronomers have discovered and learn about our amazing universe. You will spend time in the classroom, in the Cosmodome (Carnegie Hall’s planetarium) and outdoors attending astronomy demonstrations. Music around the World (2:40pm) Instructor: Birch Graves Explore the world through music! From German hip-hop to Tuvan throat-singing, you will be immersed in the rhythms and sounds of far-away places. We will watch videos, listen to recordings, read, write, move, create art, discuss, and best of all, we will make music. You will play real pieces of music from places like Africa and Indonesia. Let’s go! Offered Week One only. Pottery Studio (1pm and 2:40pm) Instructor: Sean O’Connell Explore clay and learn to use hand building and sculpting techniques. Creativity and skill-building will be the focus of this class. Students can pick up their pottery in late August, after it has been fired in the kiln. Pysanky Egg Dyeing (2:40pm) Grades 4-7 only Instructor: April Vincent Students will learn the traditional art of Ukrainian egg dyeing. By coating eggs with layers of wax drawings and successively immersing them in brilliantly colored dyes, very intricate eggs can be produced. Children will work with traditional tools including hot melted wax and permanent dyes. Rockets and Rollercoasters (1pm and 2:40pm) Instructor: Jason Johans Have you ever wanted to create your own rocket that actually launches? How about design your own working rollercoaster? In this class, you can do all that and more while exploring physical science in action, through hands-on activities and experiments. School of Rock (2:40pm) Instructor: Birch Graves Are you ready to rock out? In this exciting class you will learn about the history of rock and roll. Then it will be time to make some music yourself. You and your fellow classmates will learn real rock songs on easy-to-play percussion instruments. At the end of the week, we’ll perform as part of the Student Showcase. Offered Week Two only.
