What is a Peripheral?•Device that is connected to a computer• It is dependant upon the computer to in

order to work• It means you can do more things on the

computer OR that you are able to do them easier

•EXAMPLES:printers, speakers/earphones, scanners, web cams, digital cameras, mouse, microphones, external hard drives, graphics tablet etc

HOW ARE THEY CONNECTED?•Each computer/laptop has different PORTS•Places where you can insert different

types of connectors•E.g.

▫SERIAL PORT/CONNECTOR▫USB PORT/CONNECTOR▫MONO CONNECTOR / MONO JACK

Types of USB connectorsUSB A - A type connectors can be found on almost every USB cable.  Type A USB connectors are wide and flat, with a plastic piece inside that prevents the user from plugging them in upside down. Virtually every peripheral device on the market these days uses them.

Types of USB connectorsTYPE B -  Type B is a little more square in shape, although there is a notch taken out of two of the corners to make sure that the user inserts it correctly. This connector usually plugs into the peripheral device. For instance, most printers and scanners have ports for type B USB connectors.
