Innovation Scheme - Characteristics

Built around pan-EU networks of competence centres / innovation hubs (normally RTOs or universities)

Provide expertise and skills Broker/facilitator across value chains Technology Transfer Dissemination / Multiplier

Critical mass of experiments

Industrial – focus: SMEs/mid-caps Cross value chain Flexible partnerships (50-250M€) Share lessons learnt – not IPRs

Flexible and light implementation

Coping with speed of market forces Add new experiments during proejcts

FP7: Open Calls for new partners H2020: Cascading funds to third parties

Typical project structure: IP/large IA

Phase 1 - facts and figures

10

• Financial support structure:

• Strong industrial participation

• 275 of 330 contractors are industrial

• 75% of them are SMEs and mid-caps (210)

• 120 of them are totally new to EU R&I programmes

• Good SME balance between users and suppliers (50/50)

• Collaboration across Europe and industrial sectors

• >70% of experiments are x-border: strong EU-dimension

• From classical (auto, aero, energy) to new sectors: food, textile, media, pharma, health, …

Application Experiments: A successful example

Cloud-based simulation of aerodynamics of light aircraft

Motivation • So far used Computational Fluid

Dynamics (CFD) simulation was limited and did not provide the required level of fidelity in a timely and efficient manner

• In-house computing power was insufficient to do full CFD simulation

BENEFITS • Full simulation available at

affordable cost (30k€ per design) • No in-house capacity necessary

(300k€) • Time for simulation shrank from 20-

30 days down to 2-3 days • Better designs and faster time to

market

Partnership -End User: Pipistrel d.o.o. -HPC expert: XLAB d.o.o. -HPC Provider: Arctur d.o.o.

Equipment Assessment: a successful example

FLAT - Plug in laser diode module for warm sheet metal forming

“Cold” forming: break Laser assisted forming: success

Partnership Supplier: MONOCROM User: Johnson Controls Research centre: AIMEN (ES)

Motivation • Development of solderless clamping

method of higher power • Design of special optical design to

deliver focused line • Novel packaging concept adapted to

specific needs (e.g. harsh environment)

BENEFITS • Serving demand for ever higher

quality products becomes possible • Accelerated product development

and time to market • Readiness for industrial deployment

at reduced risk

Mentoring & Sponsorship Programme for new Innovation Hubs

Bootstrap ~25 innovation hubs in "non-I4MS regions"

RTOs, academia

Investment shared by phase 2 I4MS projects: +- 1.5 M€

Largely foreseen in phase 2 proposals

Mechanisms:

1. Call for expression of interest (EoI) for new hubs (Q4 2015)

2. I4MS competence centres as mentors each launch 5 sponsoring subcontracts (6 months in Q2 + Q3 2016, 30-50k€)

Role of Mentoring & Sponsorship actions

Investigate digital needs of regional smart specialisation

Link needs to I4MS projects and competences

3 feasibility studies for Best Practice experiments

Establish links with local funding bodies 15
