This allows you to start the en-gine with fewer pulls on the starter rope.Activate the primer bulb by pressing itand allowing it to return to its originalform.

;HOKEThe CHOKE helps to supply fuel to theengine to aid in cold starting. Activatethe choke by moving the choke lever tothe FULL CHOKE position. After the en-gine attempts to start, move the chokelever to the HALF CHOKE position. Onceengine has started, move the choke le-ver to the OFF CHOKE position.

BEFORESTARTINGENGINE,_/LWARNING: Be sureto read

the fuel information in the safety rulesbefore you begin. If you do not under-stand the safety rules, do not attemptto fuel your unit. Call 1-800-235-5878.FUELING ENGINE

_/LWARNING: Remove fuel capslowly when refueling.

This engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be mixed with a goodquality synthetic 2-cycle air-cooled en-gine oil. We recommend Craftsmanbrand synthetic oil. Mix gasoline and oilat a ratio of 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is ob-tained by mixing 3.2 ounces of oil with 1gallon of unleaded gasoline. Includedwith this trimmer is a 3.2 ounce contain-er of oil. Pour the entire contents of thiscontainer into 1 gallon of gasoline toachieve the proper fuel mixture. DONOT USE automotive oil or boat oil. These oils will cause engine damage. When mixing fuel, follow instructionsprinted on container.Once oil is added to gasoline, shakecontainer momentarily to assure thatthe fuel is thoroughly mixed. Alwaysread and follow the safety rules relat-ing to fuel before fueling your unit.IMPORTANTExperience indicates that alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol) can attract mois-ture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage.Acidic gas can damage the fuel sys-tem of an engine while in storage. To avoid engine problems, empty thefuel system before storage for 30 daysor longer. Drain the gas tank, start theengine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use freshfuel next season.Never use engine or carburetor clean-er products in the fuel tank or perma-nent damage may occur.See the STORAGE section for addition-al information.HOW TO STOP YOUR UNIT• To stop the engine, push and re-

lease the engine ON/STOP switch. The switch will automatically returnto the ON position. Wait 5 secondsbefore attempting to restart unit toallow switch to reset.

• If engine does not stop, move chokelever to FULL CHOKE position.

You will achieve the best perform-ance and minimum line wear by notcrowding the line into the cuttingarea. The right and wrong ways areshown below.

Tip of line does the

Right

Line crowded intowe!

Wrong

• The line will easily remove grassand weeds from around walls, fences, trees and flower beds, but italso can cut the tender bark of treesor shrubs and scar fences.

• For trimming or scalping, use lessthan full throttle to increase line lifeand decrease head wear, especially:• During light duty cutting.• Near objects around which the line

can wrap such as small posts, trees or fence wire.

• For mowing or sweeping, use fullthrottle for a good clean job.

TRIMMING - Hold the bottom of thetrimmer head about 3 in. (8 cm) abovethe ground and at an angle. Allow onlythe tip of the line to make contact. Donot force trimmer line into work area.

Trimming

3 in. (8 ore)Above Ground

SCALPING - The scalping techniqueremoves unwanted vegetation down tothe ground. Hold the bottom of the trim-mer head about 3 in. (8 cm) above theground and at an angle. Allow the tip ofthe line to strike the ground aroundtrees, posts, monuments, etc. This tech-nique increases line wear.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FORUSE WITH WEED BLADES• Blade Thrust is a reaction that only

occurs when using a bladed unit. Thisreaction can cause serious injurysuch as amputation. Carefully studythis section. It is important that youunderstand what causes blade thrust, how you can reduce the chance of itsoccurring, and how you can remain incontrol of unit if blade thrust occurs.

• WHAT CAUSES BLADE THRUST -Blade Thrust can occur when thespinning Made contacts an object thatit does not cut. This contact causesthe Made to stop for an instant andthen suddenly move or 'thrust" awayfrom the object that was hit. The"thrusting" reaction can be violentenough to cause the operator to bepropelled in any direction and losecontrol of the unit. The uncontrolledunit can cause serious injury if theblade contacts the operator or others.

• WHEN BLADE THRUST OCCURS- Blade Thrust can occur withoutwarning if the blade snags, stalls, orbinds. This is more likely to occur inareas where it is difficult to see thematerial being cut. By using the unitproperly, the occurrence of bladethrust will be reduced and theoperator will be less likely to losecontrol.

• Cut only grass, weeds, and woodybrush up to 1/2 inch in diameter withthe weed blade. Do not let the bladecontact material it cannot cut such asstumps, rocks, fences, metal, etc., orclusters of hard, woody brush havinga diameter greater than 1/2 inch.

• Keep the blade sharp. A dull bladeis more likely to snag and thrust.

• Cut only at full throttle. The blade willhave maximum cutting power and isless likely to bind or stall.

• "Feed" the blade deliberately andnot too rapidly. The blade can thrustaway if it is fed too rapidly.

• Cut only from your left to your right.Cutting on right side of the shield willthrow debris away from the operator.

• Use the shoulder strap and keep afirm grip on the unit with both hands.A properly adjusted shoulder strapwill support the weight of the unit, freeing your arms and hands tocontrol and guide the cutting motion.

• Keep feet comfortably spread apartand braced for a possible sudden, rapid thrust of unit. Do not overreach.Keep firm footing and balance.

• Keep blade below waist level; it willbe easier to maintain control of unit.

• Do not raise the engine above yourwaist as the blade can comedangerously close to your body.

• Do not swing unit with such force thatyou are in danger of losing yourbalance.

Bring the engine to cutting speed be-fore entering the material to be cut.Ifthe blade does not turn when yousqueeze the throttle trigger, make suretube is fully inserted into the engine.Always release the throttle trigger andallow engine to return to idle speedwhen not cutting. The blade shouldnot turn while the engine is running atidle. If the blade turns at idle, do notuse your unit. Refer to the CARBURE-TOR ADJUSTMENT section or contactyour Sears Service Center.• Maintain good firm footing while using

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

,_WARNING: The trimmer head

or blade will be spinning during mostof this procedure. Wear your protec-tive equipment and observe all safetyprecautions. After making mixture ad-justments, recheck idle speed. Thetrimmer head or blade must not move/spin at idle speed.

Carburetor adjustment is critical and ifdone improperly can permanentlydamage the engine as well as the car-buretor. If you require further assis-tance or are unsure about performingthis procedure, call our customer as-sistance help line at 1-800-235-5878.Old fuel, a dirty air filter, a dirty fuel fil-ter, or flooding may give the impres-sion of an improperly adjusted carbu-retor. Check these conditions beforeadjusting the carburetor. The carburetor has been carefully setat the factory. Adjustments may benecessary if you notice any of the fol-lowing conditions:• The trimmer head/blade moves at

idle. See IDLE SPEED under adjustingprocedure.

• Engine will not idle. See IDLE SPEEDunder adjusting procedure.

• Engine dies or hesitates instead ofaccelerating. See ACCELERATIONCHECK under adjusting procedure.

• Loss of cutting power. See MIXTUREADJUSTMENT (L or H) under adjustingprocedure.

There are three adjustment screws onthe carburetor. The low speed adjust-ment screw is marked with the letter L,and the high speed adjustment screwis marked with the letter H. The thirdscrew is the idle adjustment screw.

Idle SpeedAllow engine to idle. If the trimmer headmoves, idle speed is too fast. If the en-gine stalls, idle speed is too slow.• Turn idle speed screw clockwise to

increase engine speed.• Turn idle speed screw counterclock-

wise to decrease engine speed.Low Speed Mixture Adjustment - L1. Allow the engine to idle.2. Turn low speed mixture screw (L)

slowly clockwise until the speed be-gins to drop.

3. Turn the low speed mixture screw(L) counterclockwise until the speedincreases and then starts to dropagain.

4. Set the low speed mixture screw (L)at the midpoint between the twopositions.

Readjust the idle speed (See IDLESPEED).

High Speed Mixture Adjustment - HCAUTION: Do not operate engine atfull throttle for prolonged periods whilemaking adjustments as damage to theengine can occur. Adjust the mixturescrew 1/16 of a turn at a time. A 1/16turn is about the width of the slot in thetop of the screw.1. Allow the engine to idle.2. Squeeze the throttle trigger fully.

Turn the high speed mixture screw(H) counterclockwise until it stops.

3. Turn the high speed mixture screw(H) 1/16 of a turn clockwise at atime until the engine runs smoothly.

After completing adjustments, checkfor acceleration and trimmer headmovement at idle. Reset if necessary.Acceleration CheckIf engine dies or hesitates instead ofaccelerating, turn the low speed mix-ture screw (L) counterclockwise untilyou have smooth acceleration.

_WARNING: Perform the follow-ing steps after each use:• Allow engine to cool before storing

or transporting.• Store unit and fuel in a well venti-

lated area where fuel vapors cannotreach sparks or open flames fromwater heaters, electric motors orswitches, furnaces, etc.

storage.• Store in a clean dry area.• Lightly oil external metal surfaces.

FUEL SYSTEMUnder FUELING ENGINE in the OPERA-TION section of this manual, see mes-sage labeled IMPORTANT regardingthe use of gasohol in your engine.Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alter-

native in minimizing the formation offuel gum deposits during storage. Addstabilizer to the gasoline in the fueltank or fuel storage container. Followthe mix instructions found on stabilizercontainer. Run engine at least 5 min-utes after adding stabilizer.Craftsman 40:1,2-cycle engine oil (aircooled) is already blended with fuelstabilizer. If you do not use this Searsoil, you can add a fuel stabilizer toyour fuel tank.ENGINE• Remove spark plug and pour 1 tea-

spoon of 40:1,2-cycle engine oil (aircooled) through the spark plugopening. Slowly pull the starter rope8 to 10 times to distribute oil.

• Replace spark plug with new one ofrecommended type and heat range.

• Clean air filter.• Check entire unit for loose screws,

nuts, and bolts. Replace any dam-aged, broken, or worn parts.

• At the beginning of the next season, use only fresh fuel having the propergasoline to oil ratio.

OTHER• Do not store gasoline from one sea-

son to another.• Replace your gasoline can if it starts

to rust.
