Space Charge Distribution Measurement using PEA Method

-Encounter with unexpected behavior

Professor Yasuhiro Tanaka

Measurement and Electric Machine Control Laboratory,

Tokyo City University, Japan

Synopsis:

Space charge accumulation phenomenon is one of key factor to resolve a problem to realize HVDC network,

especially using a solid insulating material. In the case of power transmission cable, it was hard to develop a

good material for the insulating layer which was sustainable under DC high electric stress, and most of the

cable using an ordinary insulating material like XLPE couldn’t pass a DC test for cable. The reason of such fail

was thought as the accumulation of so-called space charge in the layer under high DC stress. To resolve such

problem, authors have been investigating the space charge accumulation characteristics in various polymeric

materials such as LDPE, XLPE and modified materials based on polyethylene using PEA method. From the

measurement results, we have encountered many curious space charge behaviors which were not expected

before the measurements. In this report, I would like to introduce these interesting characteristics of the space

charge accumulation behaviors observed in the polymeric materials under high DC stress at various

temperature.

Progress in Eco-friendly High Voltage Cable Insulation Materials

Professor Jinliang He

State Key Lab of Power Systems,

Department of Electrical Engineering,

Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China

Synopsis:

Traditional crosslinking polyethylene (XLPE) insulation cannot meet the requirement of environmental protection

and sustainable development. This speech summarizes the progress in the development of eco-friendly high voltage

cable insulation materials, especially the PP based cable insulation materials. Propylene based materials, including

the blends with other elastomers and copolymers are introduced as the base material for both AC and DC cable

insulation application; secondly the effects and mechanisms of adding nanoparticles and grafting with polar groups

in tailoring the properties of PP based cable insulation under DC electric field are discussed; thirdly, the space charge

performances under high temperature and high electrical field, are presented. Finally, the issues for future research

are introduced.

Interface tailoring for charge injection mitigation in insulators: different

principles and achievements

Professor Gilbert Teyssèdre

Laboratory of Plasma and Energy Conversion,

University of Toulouse, France

Synopsis:

In the development of HVDC technologies, one needs to handle the major drawback of insulating materials,

which is the accumulation of electrical charges forming internal space charge with possibly two major issues:

(i)- the out-of-control of the internal electric field distribution initiating current runaway and (ii)- cumulated

molecular level damages extending or creating defects and leading ultimately to breakdown. As regards

Polyethylene, which is the main material used in the insulation of HV cables, the efforts are directed to the

reduction of crosslinked by-products or even the replacement by thermoplastic polymers and/or

nanocomposites and more generally to the understanding of charge trapping processes in those materials.

At the same time, it is recognized that charge build up and even conductivity measurements heavily depend

on electrode conditions of samples and not only on bulk properties of insulations. To prevent space charge

accumulation, one necessary route, not examined in depth by the scientific community to date, is to control

the charge injection at the interfaces between the insulating material and the “electrodes” (metallic or semi-

conducting). Very few studies focus on the interface properties to change its characteristics in terms of charge

trapping probably because in a general way the phenomena at play are complex and not correctly described.

In this contribution, we investigated different routes for tailoring the interface between electrode and

polyethylene material, based on chemical modification of the insulation or layer intercalation. Three processes

were tested, going from grafting of polar groups, thick nanocomposite layer intercalation up to thin

nanocomposite layer deposition. Depending on the process, charge injection control is achieved either for

negative charges or for charges of both polarities. The process of charge injection control is discussed with

reference to the chemical/physical modifications brought about by the different treatments. The results

provide indication towards a strategy to control the charge injection in power cables and other electrical

components.

Developments in Functional Materials for Extended Performance Dielectrics

Professor Gary C Stevens

Gnosys Global Ltd,

The Surrey Research Park, Guildford, Surrey, UK

Synopsis:

Achieving high performance electrical power assets for higher voltage and higher ampacity applications in both

alternating and direct current networks requires dielectric materials with increasingly enhanced performance. This

lecture will examine a number of developments in functional materials that enable new materials to be formulated

that can meet some of the key challenges while enabling an appropriate balance of properties to be achieved.

Currently, these developments are informed by some a priori molecular modelling, multi-scale modelling and

simulation but also through the use of simple concepts based on experimental observation. We will illustrate this

using examples drawn from recent work on thermoplastic polymer blends, nanocomposite dielectrics and self-

healing materials having self-repair function.

Biography:

Gary Stevens was born in London on 21 October 1950. He received his BSc in Physics (Hons) at Queen Mary College

of the University of London in 1972; in 1975 he received his PhD in solid state polymer physics from the same college.

He joined the Central Electricity Research Laboratories (CERL) in 1975 and undertook fundamental and applied

research in dielectric materials, intrinsically conducting polymers and non-metallic materials and served in several

senior research roles heading first Dielectrics and later Electrical Sciences first within CERL and later in National

Power where he also headed Energy Futures and Utilisation. In 1994 he established the Polymer Research Centre at

the University of Surrey and was appointed Research Professor in 2000 and remained the Director of the PRC until

he established Gnosys Global in 2006. He also established and directed the University of Surrey Environmental Body

in 2000. He is a Chartered Physicist and member of the Institute of Physics and the IEEE. He was General Secretary

of the Dielectrics Society and Chairman of the Dielectrics Group of the IOP. He is an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer and

Member of the EPSRC College in the UK.

Polypropylene Laminated Paper (PPLP) insulation for HVDC power cables

Professor George Chen

The Tony Davies High Voltage Laboratory

University of Southampton UK

Synopsis:

HVDC power transmission systems have received significant attention as they offer many advantages over HVAC

systems in terms of grids connectivity, system reliability and off-shore wind farms etc. As a result, HVDC power

cables have experienced a significant development in last ten years. Many efforts have been placed on developing

polymeric insulated cables. Insulation based on improved XLPE, nanocomposite and thermoplastic have been

developed for HVDC power cables at 400 kV and above. However, less attention has been placed on the insulation

based on polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP). PPLP has been widely used for HV power cables including HVDC

due to its excellent electrical and mechanical performances. Its use for power cable insulation can be traced back

to 1970’s, initially for HVAC cables but extended to HVDC cables. Typically, PPLP consists of a laminate of a

polypropylene film with a paper layer on both sides. This type of structure shows a higher AC, impulse and DC

breakdown strengths as well as lower dielectric loss compared with the conventional kraft paper. When compared

with XLPE insulation only limited publications on PPLP insulation are available in the public domain and the exact

mechanisms for the improved electrical performance are not well understood. When this type of insulation is

applied to HVDC cables above 500 kV, it becomes increasingly important to understand charge dynamics in such a

system and the influence on electrical performance.

Biography:

George Chen was born in China in 1961. He received the B.Eng. and M.Sc. degrees in 1983 and 1986, respectively

in electrical engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University, China. After he obtained the Ph.D. degree in 1990 in

electrical engineering from The University of Strathclyde, UK, he joined the University of Southampton as a

postdoctoral research fellow and became a senior research fellow subsequently. In 1997 he was appointed as a

research Lecturer and was promoted to a Reader in 2002. Over the years, he has developed a wide range of interests

in high voltage engineering and electrical properties of materials and published over 100 papers. He is a visiting

Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong University, China.
