Blowing Agents Handi-Foam High Density Kits: Performance and Environmental Advantages In January 2016, ICP Adhesives & Sealants, Inc. (formerly Fomo Products, Inc.) announced its Three-Point-Pledge of being a trusted resource, providing an improved customer experience, and improving the environment in which its products are used. “When developing our new Handi-Foam High Density kits, Solstice GBA fit into our Three-Point-Pledge perfectly,” said Zachary Utz, marketing product manager, ICP Adhesives & Sealants. “Not only were we able to use a foam blowing agent with a much lower global warming potential than the current material, we are introducing a repair kit that offers contractors efficiency, convenience, and a very durable foam.” The foam used in these low-pressure SPF kits is formulated with Honeywell’s ultra-low global warming potential (GWP) Solstice GBA, which is based on next generation hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO-1234ze(E)) technology. It is an ideal replacement for HFC blowing agents, delivering both improved performance and lower climate impact. CASE STUDY RESULTS

“Prior versions of the repair kit used HFC-134a blowing agent, which has a very high GWP,” said Mojee Cline, vice president, Technology, ICP Adhesives & Sealants. “It is one of the blowing agents that the EPA is going to delist in its SNAP Rule 21 in the next few years. Adopting Solstice GBA not only positions us well ahead of regulations calling for the phaseout of HFCs, its solubility and other properties helped us develop a product we are confident contractors will really like.” According to Cline, some of the advantages of the new repair kits include:• High density that matches typical foam roof densities (greater than

3 lbs./cubic foot)• High compression strength that offers a strong, durable surface

capable of handling foot traffic (40 psi or greater)• Smooth, professional-looking surface after curing • Paint and other coatings are easily applied• Excellent thermal performance • At least a 12 month shelf life

A Strong Collaboration. Mutual Success.“ICP’s adoption of Solstice GBA marks a significant milestone in Honeywell’s commercialization of the Solstice platform of low GWP products,” said Laura Reinhard, global business manager for spray foam, Honeywell. “ICP is the first company to use Solstice GBA in two-component, low-pressure foam and this is a testament to the strong collaboration between our companies.” Reinhard attributes this success to multiple teams across both organizations working well together; from leadership, to technical, to marketing.

“The collaboration has been fantastic,” said Utz. “Not only has Honeywell been a resource on the R&D side, they’ve assisted on the marketing side. They put us in contact with some contractors to help us develop new formulas and obtain product feedback from the field so we can be sure we are solving end-user needs.”

Roof repairs at Brookpark Memorial Elementary School were made using new Handi-Foam High Density kits from ICP Adhesives & Sealants.

Some Benefits of Solstice® GBA Include:• Ultra-low GWP of less than 1, even lower

than carbon dioxide

• Non-ozone depleting

• Nonflammable (ASTM E-681 and EU A11)

• Better solubility than HFC-134a

• Listed under the U.S. EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program to replace ozone depleting substances

• VOC-exempt per U.S. EPA

• Listed on the TSCA inventory and registered under REACH

• Reliable, U.S.-based supply from Honeywell

“ It saves us time and money. We can double the repairs in the same amount of time.”

-Dustin Ross, Service Manager, West Roofing Systems

Roof Repairs Made Faster and EasierBefore using the repair kits, West Roofing Systems typically used high-speed, high-pressure foam for roof repairs. According to Dustin Ross, service manager, West Roofing Systems, this was usually a labor intensive set-up involving three or four crew members and two trucks pulling an air compressor and a generator. Repairs would often take half a day to complete. “With these lightweight repair kits, we can cut the crew in half, use one less truck, and speed up repairs,” said Ross. “It saves us time and money. We can double the repairs in the same amount of time.”

Another popular feature of the new kits is the Handi-Gun® II. This innovative spray gun has a number of benefits including Multi-Direction Twist and Lock® ColorWise® Nozzles, a high-low module and ergonomic design. “The repair kits definitely exceeded our expectations. The new gun with its variable speed trigger is a huge benefit and our crews really like it,” said Ross.

Excitement Building for the New KitsLooking ahead, ICP is gearing up for its commercial launch of the new Handi- Foam High Density kits in the fourth quarter, 2016. “The kits have performed flawlessly at all of the field trials,” said ICP’s Utz. “The feedback we’ve received from contractors has been outstanding so we’re excited to bring this product to the market.” Honeywell’s Laura Reinhard agrees, “Now is the time to accelerate the commercialization of products using Solstice GBA. Early adopters, like ICP, are positioning themselves well for future success.”

From the Lab to the RoofICP knew it was imperative that the new repair kits perform as well in the field as they do in the research lab. “When we made the switch from HFC-134a to Solstice GBA, we noticed that the foam tended to spray out a lot better,” said Andrew Shinko, R&D chemist, ICP Adhesives & Sealants. “It doesn’t sputter as much as we’ve seen with HFC-134a kits and it gives us a smoother spray profile. Also, we achieved very high density and compressive properties so when people are walking on the roof, they don’t have to be concerned about the foam deforming or delaminating from the substrate. This is a very good product.”

ICP and Honeywell recognize that feedback from the contractor who pulls the spray gun trigger is paramount when developing new spray foam products. West Roofing Systems, a highly respected Ohio-based contractor, was approached by ICP (based in Norton, Ohio) to try out the new Handi-Foam kits on a roof at Brookpark Memorial Elementary School. West Roofing Systems was eager to test the new kits and saw them as a way to increase speed and efficiency when repairing foam roofs.

Prior to using the Handi-Foam kits, West Roofing Systems often made roof repairs with high-pressure SPF that required two trucks pulling an air compressor and a generator.

The kits include ICP’s innovative Handi-Gun II with a variable speed trigger and other features that have been well received by contractors.

The lightweight, low-pressure SPF kits are ideal for a variety of repairs including cracks, blisters, penetrations and curbs.
