  • Painting/Praying with the Icon of Our Lady of the Sign

Holy images express things in themselves

invisible and render them present, visible,

and active. An icon...does not exist simply to

direct our imagination during prayers. It is a

material center in which there reposes an

energy, a divine force, which unites itself to

human art. - Orthodox theologian Vladimir Lossky

Paint (or write) your own icon with step-by-step group and individual instruction. Spend the retreat week creating your own and reflecting on the icon of Our Lady of the Sign. You are invited to go deeper into the symbolism of this 4th century image of the praying Church, as Christ-bearers in the world. The image is known as the Platytera in Greek, meaning More Spacious than the Heavens is the one who bears Christ.

Drazen Dupor will present some of the history of iconography and lead us through the process of creating our own icon.

Pat Shutts will facilitate morning and evening prayer and reflection times.

    .

Drazen Dupor, a Yugoslavian artist and iconographer, studied the art of icon painting in Thessalonica, Greece, at the K.N. Georgiadis

School of Art. Over the last twenty years, Drazen has been creating works in his own Art Studios in Tessalonica and since 2003, in Madison, Wisconsin.

Pat Shutts has a B.A. in Theology and an M.A. in Pastoral Studies, and received training in spiritual guidance from Creighton University. Pat brings her gift of compassionate listening and openness to the Spirit, and companions seekers as they acknowledge and discover God's presence in all of life's journey. Pat is a lay covenant member of the Wheaton Franciscans and a member of the Sophia Zen Sangha.

No less than the written word, an icon is an instrument for the transmission of Christian tradition and faith. Through sacred imagery, the Holy Spirit speaks to us, revealing truths

that may not be evident to those using only the tools of reason.

~ Jim Forest in Praying with Icons
