The coastal town is known for its serene atmosphere and French ambience. The main campus of the University has a sprawling area of 780 acres spread on the western side of the East Coast Road. The land gently rolls down to the beaches and is interspersed with lovely woods. This idyllic campus is on the fast-track to developing into an ideal nurturing ground for innovation and creativity. The University is supported by the University Grants Commission and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Pondicherry Central University moves through a phase of 300 times growth. The teaching faculty consists of more than 423 active members in different 15 Schools, 37 Departments and 10 Centers. Currently, there are around 6100 students pursuing their post-graduate and doctoral programs in the campus. Pondicherry is about 160 km south of Chennai and is well connected by bus through the East Coast Road (ECR). Pondicherry is well connected to all important cities in India by rail route. The nearest international airports are at Chennai and Bangalore. The airport of Pondicherry is linked to Bangalore by Spicejet airlines. About Department of Physics The Department of Physics, came into existence in June 1987, offers a two year program of MSc and a five- year Integrated-MSc program (with specializations in Condensed Matter Physics, Electronics and Laser Physics), Integrated-PhD and regular PhD programs. The research areas of the Department of Physics are widespread in the fields of magnetic materials, multiferroics, spintronics, dielectrics, photonics, solid state ionics, spectroscopy and transport studies, nonlinear optics and semiconductor lasers, nonlinear dynamics, statistical mechanics, plasma physics, magnetohydrodynamics, atomic physics and quantum field theory. The Department has nine patents and many national and international collaborative research programs. The department has been recognized for special funding by DST-FIST and UGC-SAP to promote research activities in Condensed matter physics, Optics, Lasers and Theoretical physics. About MSI Magnetics Society of India is a registered professional body that came into existence in 1973 with its office located in DMRL Hyderabad. The main objective of MSI, among several others, is to bring together all those who work in the field of magnetics, to a common forum for dissemination of technical information, sharing of technical facilities, assessing the technical needs of industries and promoting a strong interaction among academicians, technocrats and entrepreneurs. Currently, the society derives its strength from nearly 60 Patron members (from companies) and about 550 Life members.
