ICM Student guide (Period 3 and 4)

In this short guide, you can see at a glance what you should do if you experience difficulties in your student life.

If you have a problem, then you should immediately do something about it. The longer you leave it, the more dif-ficult it is to solve the problem.

We want to make communication smooth and open and efficient within the department, so please make sure that you read this guide so that you know where to go in any given situation.

Usually the problem can be solved if you go to the right place in the first instance of any difficulty and problems can be solved quickly and efficiently.

SCC coach

Your SCC coach is the first level you come to if you have a problem. SCC coaches will help you with study prob-lems and can in the first instance try to help you with any difficulties you have with your study or school life.

Your SCC coach should be able to point you in the right direction, but here’s what to do at a glance.

Personal problems that affect your study or your ability to meet a deadline - Student counsellor.

Study problems - SCC coach

Money problems - Student counsellor (if you are an international student. visit the International office)

Dispute with a teacher - SCC coach, who will try to solve the problem for you. If not, then follow the procedures mentioned in this guide.

I can’t get an answer from a teacher!/They are unavailable! - Talk to your SCC coach.

The Kick off for SCC will give you the information for each period as communicated by the co-ordinators.

They will inform you about any important information that you will need and will answer any questions that may be on your mind.

During the period, your SCC coach may ask you to have a meeting if it has been indicated that you are not com-pleting work in a satisfactory manner, if you are missing lessons, or if there is a lack of professionalism in your conduct (These matters will be discussed in a set teachers meeting during each period)

If you feel that you need help with your study or other matters, then you can always schedule a meeting with your SCC coach. Many problems can be resolved through email, so please use this chain of communication first.

ICM will be switching to course readers for each period. This means that all of the manuals will be in one docu-ment with a quick view of deadlines and projects. Make sure that you read the manual for your course.

It is up to you to know when your deadlines are and what work you need to do. If you are unsure of anything in the manual, address your questions to the teacher well in advance of deadlines or the end of a course.

Professional Conduct

Everybody in the course , both students and teachers should be treated with respect and matters dealt with in a professional manner. Abuse of fellow students or teachers will not be accepted. Being impolite to teachers is also not accepted. If you feel that a teacher has not treated you fairly, then discuss this with your SCC coach.

If your SCC coach feels that you are not behaving in a polite manner towards them, then a meeting will be ar-ranged with the manager to discuss this.

Exams and resits

It is up to you to sign up for exams and resits. It is reccomended that each time you sign in for an exam, you double check in good time that you are signed up and confirm that you have done so.

If you miss the signing up period, then you must take a resit for this exam. There strictly no exceptions to this rule.

Complaints

What is a complaint ?

According to the Regulations of INHolland a complaint is an expression of dissatisfaction regarding the conduct of a de-

partment or a body (the Executive Board, a Dean, etc.) or an individual employed within INHolland. You can find more

details in the Regulations of the Studyguide.

A complaint may, for example, pertain to treatment, a lecture timetable, an assessment date, a lecturer performance, the

accommodation etc.

What to do with your complaint?

Try to discuss your complaint as quickly as possible with the person or the body to which your complaint relate, or with

the relevant individual responsible for the issue. The table in section 45 of the Chapter `1.3.8. in the Studyguide shows

how the complaints process works. You can find more details in section 46.

You can always seek advise from the Complaints Coordinator of the Faculty. You can ask this Coordinator for mediation

in case of problems during the informal process of resolution of the complaint.

In that case she can request you for to complete the Complaintform

What to do in the case your complaint isn't resolved?

Page 3: ICM SCC reader year 1 Period 3

If the practical and informal way of resolution has failed or the outcome seemes dissatisfactory - despite a mediation of

the Complaints Coordinator - you are able to submit a formal complaint (see section 47 of the Studyguide).

This formal complaint (by phone, email or letter) may be submitted via the Administration Department of the relevant site

(for the attention of the secretary to the Executive Board) or directly to the Ombudsperson:

Hogeschool INHolland, secretariat Ombudsperson/Room 3.07

Optional activities 3rd period

In the 3rd period you have the opportunity to do an optional activity which is your opportunity to get involved with something you are interested in.

1. The ICM magazine. Here you can work for the ICM editor (a 2nd year) helping create content (Journalis-tic or Design) organising meetings and arranging internal and eternal contacts. You will be evaluated on Time management, problem solving, internal and external communication, professional product and organisation.

2. ICM events. Here you can work with the ICM events committee (2nd years) helping to organise class events, expos , business events and showcases. You will be evaluated on Time management, problem solv-ing, internal and external communication, professional product and organisation.

In both projects, you will be tasked with raising the profile of ICM and InHolland and creating new opportunities for you and your fellow students. You will be given the chance to enhance your professional experience and to gain an insight into how to work well in a media team and how to network.

Not only will this give you professional experience, but will also help you to extend the field of your study. This can also be beneficial when looking for an internship in the fourth year. When You are a second year, you can also be the manager of one of these projects, thus giving you experience on both sides of the table.
