The 12th State LevelPineapple Festival cum Sellersand Buyers Meet and YouthFestival, 2019 kicked off fromYesterday at the ThambalnuMarket Complex, AndroAssembly Constituency,Imphal East d istr ict. Thefestival is organised by theDevelopment OrganisationAndro Kendra (DOAK) incollaboration withHorticulture and SoilConservation Departmentfrom 4th to 7th July, 2019 underthe aegis of Eastern BorderArea Development Authority(EBADA) under thesponsorship of North EasternCouncil (NEC). Addressingthe media persons,Horticulture and SoilConservation MinisterThounaojam Shyamkumarsaid that the festival has beensuccessfully organised since2007 with the guidance andblessings of the elders of theAndro AssemblyConstituency. He alsocredited the hard work of theDOAK members, officials ofthe State Government,pineapple growers of the areaand people of theconstituency for the successof the festival. He hoped thatwith the commencement of thefestival, the State will receive

sufficient rainfall thus endingthe woes of the farmers.Stating that the Horticultureand Soil ConservationDepartment is working hard toincrease the income of thefarmers, he said that anotherbatch of horticulture produceswill be airlifted outside the Statesoon. Th. Shyamkumar alsostressed on the need topromote and preserve the ageold traditional culture of Androwhich is also an objective fororganising the festival. Hecalled upon people of the Stateto encourage and motivate thefarmers by buying theirproduces and focus onconsumption of organic
produces. Shri HeikhamDingo Singh, ChairmanManipur Building and OtherCo n s t r u c t io n Wo r k e r ’sWelfare Board and MLASekmai, spoke in length on theadverse effects of the climatechange in the State. Hestressed on the importance ofplanting and preserving thetrees to combat the issue of theclimate change faced in thepresent day. Speaking on thefestival he said it gives aplatform to the pineapplegrowers to increase theirincome. 185 stalls, including115 pineapple stalls aredisplaying various pineapplesand other products during the
festival. Visitors can also enjoythe pineapple juice producedin the two pineappleprocessing units at the AndroA/C. Entertainmentprogrammes are also thehighlights of the eveningfunction. The inauguralfunction of the festival was alsoattended by Shri K. RobindroSingh, Deputy Speaker,Manipur Legislative Assemblyand MLA Mayang Imphal; ShriJC Ramthanga, Pr incipalSecretary, Horticulture and SoilConservation; Smt. Th. BabitaDevi, Social Activist, PatronMember DOAK; officials of thevarious depar tments, localresidents among others.
