“Though we lack both disciplinary practices and wisdom, we can cross over the painful sea of birth-and-death by boarding the ship of Amida’s Vow. Upon crossing over to the shore of the recom-pensed land, the dark clouds of evil passion will be instantly cleared away and the enlightened moon of Dharma-nature will quickly appear. Then we shall become one with the Light unhin-dered in the ten quarters, and shall benefit all sentient begins, then and only then can we say that we are enlightened.” Our founder Shinran Shonin recognized in himself the imperfec-tion that is human beings. He recognized the ego self as the source of all sufferings. It seems natural for us human beings to look outward instead of inward for the source of sufferings and conflicts. We blame others when the unavoidable conflicts arise in life. At the same time Shinran understood that the Dharma is the source from which we can get an understanding and become ob-jective and see others people views regardless of our own disa-greements. Throughout our lives we are in constant association with others. Whether it be at home, school, work or at the temple the potential for conflict presents itself. And when conflicts do arise it creates disharmony in our lives and can affect the lives of those around us. When this happens we look for some calming element in our life for balance. Or, we blame others for the conflict we find ourselves embroiled in. But like Shinran we too must find in ourselves the

source and the solution to all conflicts. All of us wish and strive for harmony in our lives. During the month of September, we observe Ohigan (literally the other shore). Despite global warming we can still see that the fall equinox is an example of harmony in nature. The length of day and night are equal in length. The weather is very temperate and neither too hot or too cold. We can learn about harmony through nature and we can look at ourselves in contrast to nature.

    Ohigan (continued)

Shinran uses the term to cross over and he means that we must cross over the anxieties and obstacles of this life caused by our self-centeredness. And it is the Nembutsu that pulls us over to the other shore of enlightenment. If we listen to the teachings, then the recitation of namoamidabutsu is only a natural response. Namoamidabutsu is only the result of hearing and listening to the teachings.

Temple Parking Lot Project The Watsonville Buddhist Temple will be resurfacing the parking lot area in front of the Hondo/Bell Tower/Gym as well as the corner parking lot (on corner of Bridge & Blackburn St). We are anticipating this project to start Mon., Aug. 19 late afternoon/early evening and continue for approximately one week. Additional handi-cap parking will be provided in front of the Temple. Please note that the NEW main entrance to the front of the temple will be closest to the driveway between gym and parsonage. Front exit will soon be from the Hondo side of parking lot.

During this project time, please use parking in the back of the church. Watch for detour/closure signs! Your cooperation and understanding will be much appreciated.

ARIGATO GOZAIMASU … Words can’t express our heartfelt appreciation for all the temple support and the many volunteers who came out and helped

make Watsonville’s 2019 Obon Festival such a success! We had a great turnout and many

compliments about the wonderful food, great environment and festive dancing. Everyone

worked so hard and worked tiredlessly over several days to prepare and support this event.

We were also fortunate to have many volunteers from near and far, who came to help.

Thanks to members from the Monterey Peninsula Buddhist Temple for offering their help

with chicken cooking, beef skewering, and sushi prep. This is a wonderful way to express

your DANA to the Temple. Many thanks for another successful Obon Festival!

With Gassho, Barbara & Bob Shingai, Obon Chairpersons

    MANY THANKS

Thank you to everyone who generously donated to the Watsonville

Buddhist Temple annual Rummage Sale. It was a very successful

fundraising event. Big kudos to the individuals who came out with

helping hands to sort and price items and those who brought goodies to

share. Special thanks to Sheryl Wobber for co-chairing this event with

me and to Ryoko Kozuki for donating the main lunch one day.

    Everyone’s efforts are much appreciated!

    In a Matter of Seconds

On a spectacular sun laden afternoon, Before the end of Summer and the coming of Fall,

An outrageously sweet and pungent aroma Surrounded the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

Where happiness thrives and love is alive,

In supposedly the safest place on earth. Friendly high fives and masterful chefs

Make locals proud to show off their worth.

They came in scores from many different shores, For the festive gathering in this little hamlet.

Friends met up with friends and families reunited, For garlic ice cream and an egg-cellent omelette.

The band played and music filled the air,

But in a matter of seconds, joy turned into fear, As the bone chilling sound of rapid gun fire,

    Endlessly resonated in their ear.

When the sun went down, the lights became dim For the young and innocent, on that fateful day.

Gone were their dreams to make this a better world, A much kinder world ~ in a peaceful way.

Our hearts go out to each and every family, whose

Child will never again touch a Mother's loving face, Feel a Father's quiet but tenacious strength,

Or a Grandparent's warm and gentle embrace.

As we sadly contemplate this evil, we ask, Are we doing enough to lessen hate and bigotry?

Is society remiss, or did we blindly dismiss The red flags that led to this senseless tragedy?

And humankind should always keep in mind, The courage displayed in the face of danger,

By our Gallant Police, First Responders, Firemen, Volunteers and Kindly Strangers.
