HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER A HUGE SUCCESS

Each October, the National Hockey League and the NHL Players’ Association team up during the month of October to promote Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Month. This year’s initiative raised a record $1.1 million to donate to cancer organizations, eclipsing last season’s record.

During Hockey Fights Cancer’s 13-year history, the two organizations have raised more than $12 million.

“The NHL’s commitment to the fight against cancer is shared by everyone in hockey — our clubs, players and fans,” said Brian Jennings, NHL Executive Vice President of Marketing. “Each year, we raise awareness for this important cause by positioning it in the first month of the NHL season. Our fans recognize how important this initiative is and the $1.1 million they helped raise in October is proof of their steadfast support.”

FOND FAREWELLThe hockey world lost one of its most courageous warriors

on Nov. 19 when long-time NHL coach Pat Burns passed away from lung cancer at the age of 58. Burns, who also had bouts with colon (2004) and liver (2005) cancer, had been battling lung cancer since 2009.

Burns spent 12 seasons plus parts of two others behind NHL benches. He began his coaching career with Montreal in 1988-89, and had stops in Toronto, Boston and New Jersey before retiring in 2005. The three-time Jack Adams Award winner (best coach)led the New Jersey Devils to a 2003 Stanley Cup championship.

LILES REBOUNDSCompared to the standards he had set for

himself during his first six seasons, Colorado Avalanche defenseman John-Michael Liles had a disappointing 2009-10 season. Fresh off a new four-year contract, Liles produced just six goals and 31 points, with both numbers the lowest of his career.

This season, Liles has responded in a big way. The Indianapolis, Ind. native led all NHL defenseman (tied) as of Nov. 22 with 20 points (3G-17A) through the first 20 games, helping lead the Avalanche to the top of the Northwest Division with a 12-7-1 record.

“This is my seventh year here and I always looked to improve,” Liles told NHL.com. “It doesn’t matter how old you are — you learn different tricks to be better … Right now, I’m feeling better and better out there on the ice.”

RONRONRON BURKLE BURKLE BURKLE

MARIOMARIOMARIO LEMIEUX LEMIEUX LEMIEUX

Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world.Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in

retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins.

Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal.

Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less.

Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s

new multi-purpose entertainment venue.Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-

owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits.

Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups.

A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points.

In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org.

Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley.

DAVIDDAVIDDAVID MOREHOUSE MOREHOUSE MOREHOUSEPittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the

Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center.Morehouse had served as team president since 2007,

overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs.

Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine.

As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic.

Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

JASONJASONJASON BOTTERILL BOTTERILL BOTTERILL

Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006.

His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the

playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09.

One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization.

Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators.

Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office.

The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group.

Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-

related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars.

Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo.

A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments.

He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009,

Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season.

Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim.

Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh.

He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw

the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent.

Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003.

Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993.

Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary.

Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman

for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen.Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-

10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green.

coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992.

A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade.

Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average.

Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more.

It replaces the old Civic Arena/Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in 1967. It was the oldest arena in the National Hockey League.

“CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.”

CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania.

The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification.

Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney.

McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010.

In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years.

A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others.

The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

THE FLAMESThis is the final game of a five-game road trip for the Flames, who kicked it off last

Sunday in Detroit, where they lost a 4-2 lead with nine minutes to play and fell in overtime, 5-4. Henrik Zetterberg scored with less than four seconds left in regulation and Nick Lidstrom scored in overtime. . . Calgary played in New York on Monday, in New Jersey on Wednesday and in Philadelphia yesterday afternoon. . . The Flames were 3-5-1 on the road before facing the Rangers. . . The Flames’ last home game before the trip was a 7-3 victory over defending Cup champion Chicago, a game in which Iginla recorded a hat trick as Calgary snapped a three-game losing streak. Iginla scored twice more in the loss to Detroit. . . After the win over Chicago, Alex Tanguay said, “We need to make up some extra ground. Tonight was a good example of how we have to play. Let’s remind ourselves to play the same way on the upcoming road trip.” . . . Former Penguin Tom Kostopolous made his Calgary debut in the win over Chicago after being traded from Carolina two days earlier.

Jarome Iginla recorded a hat trick in the Flames’ 7-3 victory over the defending

Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.

FSN 1 PROVIDING A THANKSGIVING FEAST WITH A SMILE

The Pittsburgh Penguins players assisted the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in providing the fixings to make Thanksgiving a little warmer for 100 Hill District families.

After practice on Tuesday, November 16, five Penguins players visited the Allequippa Terrace Community Center to distribute frozen turkeys and a variety of vegetables and fruit to disadvantaged families selected by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.  Max Talbot, Brooks Orpik, Alex Goligoski, Paul Martin and Deryk Engelland not only gave their time, they also provided people who rely on the Food Bank with much welcomed entertainment and laughs.

Once the food was safely stowed in the bags of the Hill District residents, the players took time to sign autographs, pose for photographs, and talk with many of the families.

This marked the fourth year that Penguins players have distributed items for Thanksgiving meals to community centers in the Hill District.  This endeavor is made possible by fan donations at the team’s annual Food Collection which is traditionally held in early November.  The generosity of our fans truly does make the holiday season a happier time for many local families.

On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games.

The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie.

After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems.

The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals.

Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship.

Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

They are who they thought they were.

“Oh my, yes,” forward Max Talbot said.

The Penguins’ 11-8-2 record through 21 games wasn’t what they thought it would be

through approximately one-quarter of their 82-game 2010-11 regular-season schedule. But

the way they executed their systems, the way they skated, their decision-making and the

battle level exhibited in a 3-1 triumph over the Vancouver Canucks on Nov. 17 (game No.

20), and the 5-1-1 streak the Penguins found themselves on following a 5-4 shootout win

over Carolina on Nov. 19 (game no. 21) had the Penguins encouraged heading to Florida

and Buffalo at the

outset of this week.

They extended

the streak to 6-1-1

by defeating the

Panthers on Monday.

“Obviously, having

high expectations

is always a tricky

thing because most

of the time you’ll

be disappointed,”

forward Max Talbot

said. “It’s tough

to exceed the

expectations of a

team like we have. Through 21 games, we definitely had some ups and downs. But the last

seven games have been pretty solid and we’re definitely going in the right direction.

“It’s a process. Yes, we have a core group of guys but you have [new] guys [as well] and

we all have to learn how to play together and we all have to learn how to win together. It’s a

process, for sure.”

The Penguins envisioned themselves a contender when the puck dropped on Oct. 7 in

the opener against Philadelphia.

They didn’t have center Jordan Staal then and still don’t. Defensemen Brooks Orpik and

Zbynek Michalek and forward Arron Asham were also among those who have missed time

due to injury in the early going.

of incorporating newcomers

Results were mixed in

October and early November

but far from disheartening.

Although they had

at Florida (13.5 percent), the

Penguins had generated

their penalty-killing units were

boasting an 88.5 percent

success rate.

Although they had been

relatively mediocre at home

(5-5-1) their road record (6-3-1) was among the league’s best.

Mike Prisuta is the sports director for WDVE-FM and the sports anchor for “Jim, Randy & the DVE Morning Show.”

As Talbot said, it’s a process.

The Penguins understand.

“I feel really good,” defenseman Kris Letang said. “We have a lot to learn but right now

we’re building something strong, the team has good chemistry. We have new players and it’s

something that’s difficult to [build], but I think right now we’re on our way.”

Letang was especially encouraged by the mid-November Vancouver game, one he

maintained, stood out as an example of what these Penguins are capable of collectively.

“We thought we’d have a better record,” Letang said. “But the way we play, the way

we’re supposed to play when we play a food game, that’s what it should look like with the

speed that we have up front and the puck movement on the back end.”

Added forward Chris Kunitz: “I think we all know what your job is when you’re out there.

We have all aspects of guys that are willing to go out and put their bodies on the line or

step up in games and do great things.

“I think it’s just putting it all together. We haven’t gotten to the best part, where we

want to be yet. Hopefully, it’ll come soon. Just keep building toward it, just keep putting

a better game together, and another game and another game; get on a little roll. If you

can win five or six in a row it makes your team feel a whole lot more confident about each

other and you never know where things can go from there.

“With the additions on defense and the depth of our forwards, we’re definitely a team

that can play with anybody. We just have to make sure we go out and play our game and

dictate and not sit back and watch.”

Defenseman Kris Letang points to the Nov. 17 game vs. Vancouver as an example of what the team can accomplish.

Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be

difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving

The 16,978 fans in attendance might not have appreciated the significance atthe time, but history was made when the Penguins and Washington Capitals dropped the puck at Mellon Arena on Nov. 22, 2005.

Superstar rookies Sidney Crosby of the Penguins and Alex Ovechkin of the Capitals — two youngsters who were the talk of the league to that point in the season — met for the first in the National Hockey League.

Like he often does in big games, it was Crosby who stole the show in Round One between the two hockey titans, scoring a beautiful goal in the first period and later bringing down the house with a spectacular behind-the-back pass to Zigmund Palffy that led the way to a 5-4 Pittsburgh victory.

The Penguins didn’t take long to begin what would end up a four-goal first-period scoring barrage on goaltender Olaf Kolzig and the Capitals.

With the Penguins on an early power play, Palffy parked himself right outside the crease and deflected a Sergei Gonchar shot into the net to make it 1-0 Pittsburgh.

Ric Jackman increased that lead to 2-0 less than three minutes later when he threw a puck into the net off the shin pad of Washington defender.

Then, it was Crosby’s turn to showcase his brilliance. The 18-year-old center took a Palffy pass in the neutral zone and exploded between a pair

of Capitals defenders to break in 1-on-1 with Kolzig. Crosby made a couple dekes to get Kolzig out of position before slipping a backhander into the cage to make it 3-0.

“I just saw a little hole between the two [defensemen] and I tried to hit it hard and break through and always try to make a move there,” Crosby said.

Lasse Pirjeta added a fourth goal to make the score 4-0 Pittsburgh after 20 minutes.Chris Clark and Brooks Laich each tallied for the Capitals in the second period to cut

Pittsburgh’s lead in half. That was when Crosby took center stage once again.Crosby began the play by fighting off Washington’s Jamie Heward for a loose puck along

the near boards. He then skated towards the net before spinning at the bottom of the near circle and sending a perfect blind, backhand pass — from one knee no less — to a wide open Palffy at the side of the cage. Palffy easily tapped home the Crosby feed for his second goal of the game.

Washington would score twice in the third period to make Pittsburgh sweat out a 5-4 victory, but when all was said and done this game was all about Crosby’s brilliance.

“He can be like Mario [Lemieux],” Palffy said. “Sometimes he’s hard to read, you don’t know what’s going to happen. He’s very fun to play with.”

ROLEXPenguins fans occasionally get a peek at what goes on behind the scenes, but

throughout the month of December, HBO will give everyone an all-access pass to the

life of a hockey player.

“24/7 Penguins/

Capitals: Road to the

Winter Classic” will

follow both the Penguins

and Washington Capitals

on the ice, in the locker

room, on the plane and

in the workout rooms

during the month

leading up to the

Bridgestone NHL Winter

Classic on Jan. 1, 2011

at Heinz Field.

“I think fans will get

a better understanding

as to what it takes to

be a hockey player,”

Matt Cooke said. “Some

people think we just go out and play games, but there’s a lot of stuff that goes on

behind the scenes.”

HBO’s crew visited practice in September and mid-November to shoot promotional

footage, but they will start filming for the series in early December to lead up to the

big game at Heinz Field on New Year’s Day.

“We’re thrilled to be here,” said Mark Taffet, senior vice president of HBO Sports.

“The team, every player, and the coaching staff have been so cooperative. Our work

here is only as good as the time that the players and the team give us. And they have

been completely unselfish.”

NHL players are accustomed to cameras being around the locker room and the ice,

but cameras following them 24/7 will be a new experience.

“They call it 24/7 for a reason,” Taffet said. “We’ll be with the team 24/7, and we

know it will take people up close and personal in a way that they’ll love and a way that

the fans will appreciate.”

“I think it’s going to be

pretty cool to have them

follow us around a bit,”

captain Sidney Crosby

said. “I’m sure it will

be something that we

look back on and it will

be great to see the

interaction with all

the guys and all the

preparation leading

up to games.”

The show

will help bring

out players’

personalities,

something that

isn’t always

revealed

in locker

room media

scrums.

“Hopefully

fans will get

to know

our team a

little better as

regular people as well,” Crosby said.

“What we really hope is that we can take fans to places with

these players and these teams where they haven’t been before,” Taffet said. “Even if

they’re hockey fans, we want them to see some things they’ve never seen before.”

“You’ll get to see what we put into it, the fun we have and the sacrifices we make,”

Mike Rupp said. “It all leads up to a pretty awesome game on the first of January.”

The fact that the Penguins are one of two teams that will represent the NHL in front

of millions of viewers is not lost on Rupp, but it’s nothing new for the Penguins.

“It’s a responsibility we have to carry,” he said. “But we carry it every day being a

Pittsburgh Penguin.”

HBO’s award-winning “24/7” franchise previously followed boxers leading up to

big bouts, and its “Hard Knocks” series followed certain NFL teams through training

camp. Some of the Penguins watched those shows and recognize the potential to

showcase hockey.

“I watched ‘Hard Knocks’ and I understood more about football,” Max Talbot said.

“Hopefully our show is going to bring more of the fringe fans. They are really going to

see what is going on in a hockey locker room and behind the scenes. Hopefully that will

make them like hockey even more.”

“I’ve watched what they did with the boxers and I think it’s pretty cool,” Marc-Andre

Fleury said. “I’m sure we’ll watch it to see how we look, and I’m sure there will be some

good stuff.”

Evgeni Malkin has always been a little bit shy in front of the camera. Yet he sees this

as an opportunity.

“It’s good for fans to see what I do in my life,” he said. “It’s tough on me because I’ll

have to talk a lot to the cameras, but it’s a good idea. I like it because the Winter Classic

is a dream to play in again.”

A 12-minute preview of the show aired in November, and replays of the preview will

broadcast frequently leading up to Dec. 15, which is when the first of four episodes will

air at 10 p.m. The program will also be available on demand and at HBO.com.

The series will give fans an inside-the-locker room look at the Penguins as they prepare to play on Jan. 1.

inaugural season-opening tournament of the Mid-American Great Lakes Sled Hockey League.

The newly created league was designed to recognize and grow the sport of sled hockey across the United States. It gives those participating an opportunity to engage in competitive hockey and a chance to compete on a national scale.

Five teams — the Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins, Michigan Sled Dogs, Fort Wayne Flyers, Grand Rapids Sled Wings and Ohio United — competed in two days of hard-fought battles that made the tournament a huge success.

”Previous to this we just did one-weekend tournaments, but it wasn’t enough to keep a lot of hockey going,” Angie McCoy, manager of the Mighty Penguins said. “With this new league, each of the five teams will play 16 games in addition to the tournaments they used to play, so we’re getting closer to what amateur hockey does at a standup level.”

Played on two skate blades mounted under a sled, the game is essentially the same as standup ice hockey. Players use two sticks — a shortened version of a hockey that includes a ‘pick’ — to control the puck and propel themselves across the ice. With the exception of shorter periods, sled hockey is just as demanding as standup hockey, as players engage in rough, hard-checking play.

In Pittsburgh, the formation of this league meant the Mighty Penguins were able to showcase their skills in front of their community on a competitive level.

“We were so excited that we had the community backing us,” McCoy said. “The stands were pretty full and it was great to see how many people who supported us in the past came out to support these games.”

The Mighty Penguins did not disappoint. With all five teams competing in four games each, the Penguins closed out the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record.

With the season officially underway, there will be three more league tournaments to decide the standings and determine the top two teams. Those teams will then head to Blaine, Minn. to compete for a National Championship during the USA Hockey National Disabled Festival, April 1-3, 2011.

Sled hockey is an official Paralympic sport and is one of the fastest growing disabled sports in the world, and the Mighty Penguins are doing their best to spread the word.

“More than kicking off the league, the real goal was to get the community to see what the league is about and grow the team with more players,” McCoy said. “There are so many people with disabilities who want to play competitive sports, and this is one that you can really jump into it no matter what age you are.”

CLEVELAND, OHIO

What was it like to grow up in Cleveland? It was good. As a kid it was a great town to grow up in. Being a fan of sports, there’s a lot of rich tradition in that city. I like the Indians, the Browns and the Cavs, and I still follow them pretty closely. And, like Pittsburgh, it’s a hard working town.

Where was your favorite place to hang out? I liked going over to friends’ houses to play street hockey all day, and play hockey video games.

What’s an underrated part of Cleveland? The support from the fans for their sports teams.

What’s something most people don’t know about Cleveland? It gets a bad rap, but it’s got some nice areas. It’s not as bad

as people think.

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending.

The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

Pascal Dupuis missed the Penguins’ Nov. 3 game at Dallas to attend the birth of his

daughter, Lola, back in Pittsburgh. “Family comes first,” Dupuis said.

But… “That’s four kids. I’m done,” Dupuis added. “I won’t miss any more games.”

Who knows what Dupuis’ form might be nine months from now? The Penguins won’t be

playing then, anyway.

But right now, Dupuis is performing at a high level. He is part of the Penguins’ top-notch

penalty-killing unit and skates a regular shift on Sidney Crosby’s right wing.

Dupuis had five goals and four assists in his first 20 games this season. The 6-foot-1,

205-pound native of Laval, Quebec had 18 goals and 20 assists last campaign.

The Penguins’ penalty killing has been the sensation of the season so far. As of Nov. 20,

the Penguins’ PK ranked fourth in the NHL with a success rate of 88.5 percent, and was

doing so without the injured Jordan Staal, widely regarded as the team’s best penalty-killer

and one of the entire league’s elite at that task.

Dupuis says that one key to the Penguins’ PK is pressure.

“We’re putting more pressure on the opposition,” said Dupuis, 31. “The guys on the

power play are usually the guys with the most skill, so if you take away their time and

space, it’s in your favor. If you have a hot goaltender that makes the key saves, he’s going

to be your best penalty-killer. We’re

getting that from Marc-Andre [Fleury].”

The Penguins’ PK played a huge role

in the team’s 3-1 home victory over

Vancouver on Nov. 17. The Canucks

came into that game with the league’s

No. 2 power play, but went 0-for-5

vs. the Penguins and allowed Max

Talbot’s short-handed goal.

“It was great to see Max get a shortie

there,” said Dupuis. Talbot scored in the

second period to give Pittsburgh a 2-0

edge. “It really boosted our momentum.

“When you block a shot or get a

turnover, when you do have a chance on

the PK, we have the green light to try

and score a goal.”

Blocking shots is a big part of the

Penguins’ penalty-kill. The Penguins blocked 21 shots total against Vancouver, including

five apiece by Kris Letang and Brooks Orpik.

“We did what we usually do,” Dupuis said. “On game days we watch video of the

opposition. Vancouver has a good power play. Good shooters at the point, and the Sedin

twins [Daniel and Henrik] are really good with the puck on the wall and down low. Our guys

blocked some big shots. Craig Adams and Max and Brooks Orpik and [Zbynek] Michalek…

everyone blocked some. That’s why we got the job done.”

And when Staal returns…

“You know Jordan. He’s a horse out there,” said Dupuis. “He blocks a lot of shots, too.

He’s such a force. He’s got that long reach. He can intercept some passes. We definitely

miss him. But, even with him not around, we’re really doing the job.”

Dupuis spent the season’s first quarter skating on a line with Crosby and Chris Kunitz.

“This is pretty much the first 20-game stretch we’ve actually played as a line together,”

said Dupuis. “Before, [Kunitz] would get hurt, or Billy [Guerin] was there, and sometimes I’d

step in on the left or right side.

“But now we’ve been playing together for 20 games, and things are starting to click.”

Dupuis is blessed by versatility, able to play either wing on any line and keep up with

what’s demanded. Not even being centered by Crosby’s changes Dupuis’ job.

“My job doesn’t change. I’m going to be the same player,” Dupuis said. “With Sid,

you’ve obviously got to expect the puck a little more from every angle. Backhand, saucer

pass, forehand: However he wants to give it to you, he’s going to give it to you. But I can’t

change my game. I know only one way to play.”
