Not many photographers venture to Iceland during the winter months, and we will experience locations rarely photographed during the winter months. In addition, this time of year, is a good time to look for the famous aurora borealis, which in Iceland, is like nowhere else. The backdrop of the Icelandic landscape makes the aurora even more breathtaking. We will photograph the winter landscape including ice caves, frozen lakes bucolic villages, horses and the natural wonders of Iceland, all with the backdrop of the Icalandic winter. Few photographers will experience this land, during these conditions. We will only be taking five participants on this workshop due to the logistics and challenges of winter photography. This offers the participant an exceptional amount of personal time with the three of us, as well as helping you in making many memorable images and offering tips and information enabling you to grow as a photographer. With three leaders for five participants, you will have access to our input 100% of the time. You’ll be able to interact with the three of us and gain insights and information at all times.

WHY DO WE GO TO ICELAND DURING THE WINTER? Other than for the experience of the subject matter and locations not normally photographed, we go for the long period of great light. The best light for photography during the day lasts for 6-7 hours ( this is something to experience!) most of which will produce an extremely soft lowangle light. If conditions are good we will be shooting Aurora from 2000-2100 in the evening for a few hours. We will supply you with specific information ( Orvar is an expert on photographing the Aurora! ... and you will be too after this workshop).

ISN‘T IT DANGEROUS TO BE IN ICELAND IN THE WINTER? In a word, NO!. Yes it will be cold and can be stormy. We will be well taken care of. You will be supploied with information on clothing and special needs to keep warm while in the field. Most of our shooting locations are within 15 minutes from the car and we will not be doing any long winter hikes. Access to some locations specially the ice caves although short, might include rough terrain but we will be assisted by a professional mountain guide in this case. Complete safety equiptment ( helmets etc) are supplied by our guides. Slippery surfaces can be expected throughout the trip but we will send you recommendations regarding footwear for this trip.

©Jack Graham   WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS______________________ Winter is a time of year to move with the light and conditions more so than summer in Iceland. We will visit specific locations according to conditions. The January winter season can be stormy in Iceland. This makes for great imagery and is part of the allure and adventure of this trip. Temperatures are usually not that low as one may expect considering the latitude. Average temperatures are just below freezing. Some days with thaw and rain can be expected as well.. The absolute minimum temperature will be -15°C (-5 f) but a typical clear winter day is about -5°C (25 f ). The wind however makes the temperature feel colder. Being dressed with wind protection is important. We will inform you on specific clothing to use. We will suggest the proper clothing to bring along.

©Greg Duncan LOCATION INFORMATION:

• Complete itineraries and details are already set and available for your review. Please email me ([email protected] ) for details. Here are just some of the locations we will visit depending on weather and light conditions. We will adjust our itinerary according to conditions and might skip some of these locations, and add others in order to be at the best locations possible.

o Seljalandsfoss.. o Skógarfoss.: Nice in winter locations. The low midday sun will light up the

waterfall. o Pinnacles of Vík : Both in the afternoon and morning from different sides. o Fjaðurárglúfur river gorge: Nice winter location as the hopefully frozen river

and walls are nicely lit in the soft midday sun. o Lómagnúpur : If conditions are good. Small ponds offer nice reflections. o Old snowed in farm villages if it is snowy. o Skaftafell. Svartifoss : waterfall frozen . 20min hike. o Svínafellsjökull: Possible ice caves and a frozen lagoon. o Hof. Nice little church snowed in. o Breiðarmerkurjökull : ice caves if there is little snow. o Fjallsárjölull glacier lagoon. Nice background and offers possible walks on the

ice amongst icebergs. o Jökulsárlón and the beach. Beach is especially nice in the soft winter light as

it will light up the icebergs on the beach. Also the sun will set into the sea behind the icebergs.

o Jökulsárlón in the morning. Alpine glow on the Öræfajökull volcano in the background.

Hoffelsjökull glacier lagoon. Possible to walk amongst the icebergs.

SKILL LEVEL We recommend this workshop for intermediate and advanced photographers. Having the proper equipment and skills are important for this type of photography. Attendees should have a good understanding of their equipment, as well as technique As outlined,, we’ll be working on both the creative aspect of photography as well as the techniques used to create outstanding images. In order to attain the best possible images in these conditions, it is recommended you have equipment that :

1) Functions well in low light ( both cameras and lenses) 2) Functions well in adverse conditions

WHAT WILL WE BE WORKING ON? We will take our time, and look for the inner beauty to capture in our photography. We’ll use the combination of water, mountains, glaciers, beaches, and the desolate frozen landscape of Iceland to create some wonderful images. We will stress simplicity in the grand landscape, and use all aspects, including Depth of Field, proper exposure and more to improve your overall photography as well as come away with some wonderful images in excellent venues.

1) Improving your photography skills within these “hands-on” workshops 2) Making a strong photograph and tell a story with every image 3) Use of color combinations, how to use color make the image stronger 4) Other techniques including, learning about how tonalities, negative space, balance,

framing, emotional impact and flaws affect your images 5) Learning to see an image and working a scene, thus making the image a strong image 6) Choosing the look of the final image in the field, not after the fact. Taking an image

knowing how you will be processing is also stressed 7) Making Panorama’s, Helicon Focus and HDR techniques simple

8) Basic processing, work flow, how to use available programs together. Use of NIK Software.

The majority of instruction and nature photography tips and techniques will take place right there in the field. There’s no need to take notes. Before the workshop you’ll receive a complete (and updated) 60+-page syllabus containing everything we do in the field and more. We take time to review our images in informal get togethers during our time together Special presentations concerning nature photography will also be made during these sessions. My workshops are sponsored by NIK SOFTWARE, Singh-Ray, Nodal Ninja, Photograph America Newsletter, Think Tank Photo Bags, Lensbaby , Hunt’s Photo and Video and the Really Right Stuff. Discounts and some freebies are included in your workshop “pack” that you’ll receive upon arrival. Since this workshop is limited to only 5 participants, well have a lot of time together. This is primarily a field workshop. However, it is critical as well as being very informative, to take time to review your work, and discuss important aspects of making quality photographs.
