The gateway to the OslofjordSail in to Fredrikstad Cruise Port through Norway´s beautiful archipelago in the Oslofjord. 1.3 CANAL BOAT TOUR IN THE HALDEN CANAL

The Halden Canal is a well-kept secret tucked away along the Swedish and Norwegian borders. This fascinating and idyllic waterway, is loved by all who discovered it. The canal was constructed between 1852 and 1860 to facilitate timber log drives. While timber is now transported by road and rail, we can still enjoy the beautiful lakes and astonishing system of locks at Strømsfoss, Ørje and Brekke – this last lock, at 26.7 meters, is the highest in Northern Europe. During the canal tour our guide will tell you about the fascinating canal system, its history and about the wild life along the Halden watercourse. If you are lucky, you will get a glimpse of beaver, osprey, eagle or elk.

We start by sailing out to the Hvaler archipelago in Norway on our way to the maritime town of Strømstad in Sweden. We cruise through the Outer Hvaler National Park – where 833 islands, islets and skerries make up this beautiful island kingdom.

Then we cross over to the border of Sweden, and into Kosterhavet National Park. Sightseeing in the lovely little Swedish village of Strømstad is then conducted by a local guide. After a day full of sea, shores and scenic impressions we return to Fredrikstad by boat.

This tour starts by the Munch family tomb in Old Glemmen Church in Fredrikstad. Here we get an insight in the lives of Edvard Munch´s parents. The journey then continues to the picturesque little fjord village of Åsgårdstrand where we visit Edvard Munch’s house. In the picturesque village of Åsgårdstrand we get a guided tour inside the house where Munch painted some of his most famous art works, such as The Dance of Life and The girls on the Bridge. Afterwards we enjoy lunch at Hotel Åsgårdsstrand before we return by ferry to the beautiful Ramme Gaard in the tiny village of Hvitsten. Hvitsten is known for its narrow streets, its white wooden houses and is a popular destination for Norwegian families and swimming in summer. In 1910 Edvard Munch bought Ramme Gaard for inspiration and to produce some of his most famous artwork with motives from this area. This is a house he loved and kept until his death in 1944.

Ramme Gaard is an eco-cultural meeting place with one of Norway´s most beautiful gardens. We will enjoy an organic snack-meal from the farm´s own produce, and get the taste of the local «Absinth».

On this tour you will have the opportunity to visit Munch´s home, experience some of the places that can be related to his paintings and learn more about the fascinating story behind the life of one of the worlds greatest artists.

Over 200 years after the last shot was fired at this magnificent fortress it is now used as both museum and as a scene for grand cultural events. Within these walls audience now experience some of Norway´s best concerts and plays. On this tour we visit the old fortress bakery and brewery and get a taste of the local bread and beer.

In the year 1016 the Viking King Olav Haraldsson founded the city of Borg

On this tour we take you back in time to experience the Medieval town that later turned in to the city of Sarpsborg. This journey starts of with a modern exhibition where you will be introduced to pieces of art and artifacts from everyday life in the Middle Ages. In the ruins of St. Nikolas Church and Olav´s Chapel we meet the storytellers of Olav´s town, and learn about medieval beliefs and superstitions. We visit the Medieval Garden and learn fascinating facts about herbs and plants. After the Medieval gardens we move on to the beautiful manor of Hafslund Hovedgård built in the 17th century. Hafslund manor has a flowering English garden featuring a stunning 3000 year old rock car- ved artwork. The manor is very much alive and vibrant today and hosts large cultural events as well as being the perfect recreational area.

Our tour starts on foot inside the star shaped fortress town in the old part of Fredrikstad. The Old City is filled with interesting shops, museums, galleries, restaurants, designers and cafés making it a perfect destination for families. We will introduce you to local crafts- men and artisans. Among other places we take a tour to the museum, the Old Church and the Bastion where you will experience open workshops with ceramics, potteries, painters and glassblowers as they work. The star shaped ancient city of Fredrikstad, founded in 1567, is the best-preserved fortified town in North- ern Europe

We wish to tell the stories of this historic region in a lively, inspirational and knowledgeable way. This concept is an exciting alternative to traditional guided tours. Join us for a walk in the streets of the For- tress Town with Karen the Ale Brewer. Listen to her tell the tales of the olden days when these vibrant streets had a pub on each corner and the thirst for ale was large. We will visit one of Norways largest beer outlets at the Ølgaarden for tastings. This walk last for one hour and brings you through an entertaining and humorous tour of the wonderful ambience of the Old Town. The guest will be brought home to the maid Martha´s old bakery. Here she will share with you her old tales and bread baked from her own stone oven.

We stroll along the winding cobble streets within the ramparts of the old town with our guide. While taking in the historical atmosphere we are reminded that the place is still very much alive and vibrant with locals living and working within the fortification. For centuries, the location was managed by the military but since then, many of its structures became occupied by artists, craftsmen, cafes and shops.

A one hour guided tour includes a visit to the Fredrikstad Museum followed by a visit to the nearby niche boutiques and galleries.

Although his greatest expedition was to the South Pole, Amundsens first expedition was to cross the living room floor in Fredrikstad. We all have to start somewhere!

We join Karen the Ale Brewer two hundred years back in time, and in the scenic old fortress town we hear her tell the tales of the times when there was a tavern on each street corner and the water was too polluted to drink. The thirst for beer was high and so was the atmo- sphere. In Norways largest beer shop we taste different samples before we enjoy a nice meal in historical surroundings in the Old City, with music from the shanty-man Richard. This is an evening of ale and song - so join in and sing!

Along the banks of Norway´s longest river, Glomma, the fascinating industrial heritage of Fredrikstad can be explored all the way to Roald Amundsen´s Birthplace. Norway´s greatest explorer was born into a dynasty of captains and Roald and his three brothers where born in a white little captains house in Tomta. This house near the river Glomma is now turned into a museum. Although Roald Amundsen moved away at an early age he was continually drawn back to his family who lived there, and here at Tomta, situated beside the river and close to the sea, his relentless drive to explore the wildest parts of the globe was nurtured. The proud sailing ships of the family shipping firm were berthed here and the old captain`s house is preserved and contains souvenirs from several of Amundsen’s expeditions. Our guides are ready to take you on a tour back in time and into the dramatic life of Roald Amundsen!

3.4 JOIN US IN A PART OF NORWAY´S MOST FAMOUS WALK - THE PILGRIMAGE ROUTEWalking a distance of the pilgrimage Route we head in the direction of Nidaros and the burial place of St. Olav, the Viking King who founded the city of Borg (later Sarpsborg) in 1016. We start our walk at the medieval church in Skjeberg. Built around 1100 CE this church stands out in its roman style with a gothic entrance portal. Our guide takes us on a walk along the Pilgrimage Route going through beautiful cultural landscapes and calming scenery. We end our walk at a beautiful manor, Hafslund Hovedgård, from the 17th century. Here we enjoy refreshment´s in historical surroundings, followed by a guided tour of the manor.

3.3 CHILDRENS ADVENTURE

Our day starts by watching the amazing miniature trains at the Model Train Centre. Through tiny valleys and tunnels these little trains pas through the largest Model Train Centre in Scandinavia. After the mini-trains we move on to the children´s part of the city museum. Here activities are especially prepared for our younger guests. What is more natural than to go treasure hunting in the fortress town? Can you find the treasure before we take a break and eat the sweet and delicious Norwegian specialty; waffles with brown toffee cheese in a cozy cafe. Since we are in an artist village we must see if there are any young artists amongst us? Are you the next Edvard Munch. Well, for one day you can be, because in the Qulthus Art Center for children we round up by making our own versions of the famous painting «Scream». When the artwork is dry it will be taken to the ship along with a small prize for you!

4.2 IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE VIKINGSThe year is 1016. The great Viking king, Olaf Haraldsson, has just founded the town of Borg, and is giving a feast for his brave men. You are invited to the party

King Olaf built a castle in Borg, and visited it frequently during his short and dramatic life. In 1019 he married Astrid, daughter of the Swedish king Olof Skötakung.

The guests will get to know chieftains, warriors, men, women and children and will be dressed up in Viking clothes on arrival. They will then be divided into groups, each being set a different challenge: shooting with bow and arrow, jumping, «glima» wrestling or composing Viking poems. A Viking meal will be served, accompanied by Viking entertainment.

Our journey starts along The Ancient Trail on the prehistoric road with a visit to the mystical stone circles of Hunn. Within the nine stone circles and a number of burial mounds, Wiwar the High Priest, receives us as his guests. Wiwar invites us 3000 years back in time and lets us join in a ceremonial rite among the stone circles. We then fast forward into todays Science Centre and visit the new and highly inspirational Inspira Science Centre. Here we explore the past and the future – and even analyze our own DNA. Inspira is a science center where visitors are encouraged to learn through interactive exhibitions. This is a day of fun and learning for all ages.

The race in 2019 starts in Aalborg, Denmark to Fredrikstad, followed by cruise-in-company along the coast of Norway to Bergen, before racing back to Aarhus in Denmark.The Tall Ships Races is the world’s largest sailing ships event and one of the biggest sports events in the world. Each year they gather 70 – 100 big and small sailing vessels and 6000 crew members.
