WHAT WILL YOU DISCOVER WHEN YOU GO “A-VIKING?”
“
GO WHERE AWESOME IS
WWW.EXPEDITIONS.COM 3
LONG BEFORE THE WORD VIKING ENTERED MODERN ENGLISH
evoking images of pillaging barbarians, in Old Norse Viking
(pronounced Vee-king) simply meant ‘an expedition overseas.’
To ‘Fara I Viking’ (Go a-Viking) was to leave home for an extend-
ed period in search of ‘fehu’ or wealth, which for Norsemen was
more than just money—‘fehu’ meant adventure, knowledge, and
luck. Our four voyages to Iceland and the Northern Isles go in
search of all that, and much more. There are exhilarating discov-
eries to be made in this remarkable region: stunningly beautiful
landscapes from brilliant green hillsides to stark, imposing
mountains; geological marvels like bubbling mudpots and ex-
plosive geysers; incredible birdlife; ancient history; modern-day
culture; and fascinating locals who can trace their lineage back
to the settlement of their country.
And traveling there by ship—as the Vikings did—opens up so
many possibilities, granting you rare access to a seldom-seen
side of these destinations. It means coming ashore in hard-to-
reach towns and villages that rarely see outsiders; arriving by
Zodiac at the base of world-class waterfalls which are hours away
by car or bus; and sailing into fjords from the open ocean and
watching them narrow as you approach. Ready to go a-Viking?
When visitors dive deeper into Iceland, they find so much more than they intended or expected. It is one of the few destinations in the world that has a little bit of everything. But many only see Reykjavík and its outer environs. While these are worthy destinations, and our guests will still experience those iconic sites, the real heart of the country is in its remote landscapes, vast interior, and hard-to-reach coastal gems where we center our explorations.”

Director of Expedition Development

THE VIKING EXPLORERS HAVE NOTHING ON YOU—YOU’RE A
natural born discoverer, too. But sometimes even the most
intrepid adventurers need a guide, and that’s where we come
in. Our team has the knowledge and the passion for Iceland
that will kindle yours. And our generous staff-to-guest ratio
means you can gravitate to the naturalists whose personalities
and interests match yours. They will do whatever it takes,
from manning the spotting scopes so you don’t miss a single
passing whale; lingering as long as you want on deck to watch
and photograph puffins feeding or slowing shutter speed to
capture a waterfall; to offering scenic Zodiac rides, hiking at
your pace, or hot chocolate to mitigate the glacier ice. They’ll
help you to see, do, and absorb all the extraordinary experi-
ences—in comfort, with inspiration, great conversations, and
excellent dining included.
OUR VETERAN TEAM IS ACE AT DOING WHAT IT TAKES
Left page clockwise from top: National Geographic photographers and Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructors are always on hand to help you get your best shots, guests are always welcome on the bridge, ‘Vikings’ have come to provide refreshments while out on an excursion, our staff gets you up close to the beauty of Iceland via Zodiac cruises, walks and hikes of varying activity levels with expert interpretation.
VOLCANOES AREN’T THE ONLY HOT SPOTS HERE, THE CULTURE SCENE IS TOOLOCALS IN ICELAND AND THE NORTHERN ISLES HOLD FAST TO
tradition and you’ll find it infused in many different facets of their
culture—from music and dance to daily life. Thanks to our deeply
rooted network in the region, we’ve created uncommon encoun-
ters that will connect you to these places in an incredibly authentic
way. As you explore, from tiny charming hamlets to more bustling
cities, meet some of these fascinating people and discover a
deeper understanding of both their past and present lives.
MUSIC — Icelandic music is full of haunting melodies that capture the
ethereal mood of this island nation. Our ethnomusicologist, Jacob Edgar
has curated an exceptional line-up of Icelandic singers and songwriters
whose work will fill your soul with a sense of place. Preview some songs at
expeditions.com/icemusic.
DANCE — In the Faroe Islands, observe traditional Faroese chain dancing—
originally a medieval ring dance, the animated and theatrical performance
blends movement, rhythm, storytelling, and song.
KNITTING — Traditional Faroese knitting is some of the best in the world.
Discover the stories behind the intricate patterns handed down through
the generations and the Faroese sheep whose lanolin-rich wool ensures
practically waterproof sweaters. Opportunities for experienced knitters to
take a lesson with a local.
LANGUAGE — Though all distinct and different, the languages throughout
this region stem from the same root—Old Norse. Listen for unique nuances
in remote spots like Unst and Foula, the last two places in Shetland where
Norn, a relic of Norse times, was spoken.
LOCAL INDUSTRY — Learn about eiderdown production from a 7th-
generation family of farmers on tiny Vigur Island. While in Siglufjörður,
the center of Iceland’s once-thriving herring industry, a lively re-creation—
and tasting—brings the fishery process back to life.
LOCAL LUMINARIES — On select departures local personalities—hailing
from the world of politics, filmmaking, geology, journalism, and more—
join us aboard to add additional insights that will enhance the voyage.
6 1.800.EXPEDITION (1.800.397.3348)
I have focused on young Icelandic singers and songwriters who are incorporating their rich folk traditions into new, hip contexts. Icelandic music is born from the ancient sagas and folk tales of witches, goblins and elves that roam the countryside. Music, like wine, has a “terroir”, an innate quality that reflects the environment in which it was cultivated.”
— JACOB EDGAR Expedition Ethnomusicologist

AN ADVENTURE THAT’S THE SUM OF FASCINATING PARTS
ICELAND’S GEOLOGY IN ALL ITS MANIFESTATIONS—
glaciers, thundering waterfalls, immense cliffs, geothermal
springs, boiling mud pots, and rock and lava-scapes of
unearthly beauty—is world-class and far flung, making

fjords and towering bird cliffs, and with the National
Geographic Explorer as our base, we’ll land at remote islands
and hamlets nearly impossible to access by bus or car.
Iceland’s culture, one of its most surprising characteristics,
is as unique as its landscape. Icelandic people, including
those who’ll travel with us, are no-nonsense yet warm and
welcoming, with a deep reverence for the wild places and
the solace that they bring. And the Icelandic musicians who
will perform for us are superb, giving this incredible voyage
an evocative and unforgettable soundtrack.

36 1.800.EXPEDITION (1.800.397.3348)
SIGLUFJÖRĐUR, ICELAND, JULY 20, 2019, BY NATURALIST JAMES COYER
“Today we visited the small town of Siglufjörđur and the internationally
acclaimed Herring Era Museum. Before entering each of the museum’s
three buildings, we witnessed a recreation of just what the Herring
Girls did during the herring boom of the 1940s & 1950s: Grab a sardine,
remove the head and entrails with two strokes of a sharp knife, and
push the body down a chute to another Herring Girl for careful salting
and meticulous packing into a barrel—all in less than five seconds. The
processing was accompanied by Icelandic shouts and songs.
After a rousing introduction to the fascinating museum, we sailed to
Akureyri, listening to a presentation on Vikings in Iceland en route. On
arrival, we had a choice of touring the Akureyri Botanical Gardens or the
Akureyri church where a suspended ship hangs from the ceiling. After
free time in the city, we returned to the ship for cocktail hour and recaps
preceding another five-star dinner.
Activities continued after dinner with the first National Geographic
Explorer music festival. Four highly successful and award-winning
Icelandic groups performed simultaneously in four different areas of the
ship: Ylja (duo), Ástiđir (trio), Snorri Helgason, and Ragnheiđur Gröndal.
Each performed as the night progressed and guests were encouraged
to stroll at their leisure among the performances. All musicians and
guests converged in the lounge afterward for discussion and jamming.
From herring processing to botany to modern music, it was a fascinating,
diverse, and over-the-moon day—particularly appropriate on this 50th
anniversary of the moon landing.”
