Reading John 1: 1-14

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God

The greatest gift: God’s gift to you and me. His Son

John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that

whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Isaiah 6:8 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who

will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

How does God give? How does God give?

John 3:34 34  …God gives the Spirit without limit.

Titus 3:5-6 5 He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior…

Romans 8:32  He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

How do we give? How do we give?

2 Corinthians 9:6-10 2 Corinthians 9:6-10

6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

9 As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;

their righteousness endures forever.” (Psalm 112:9)

The rewards of the righteousThe rewards of the righteous

Psalm112 (An acrostic poem)

5 Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,    who conduct their affairs with justice.

6 Surely the righteous will never be shaken;    they will be remembered forever.

7 They will have no fear of bad news;    their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

8 Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;    in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.

9 They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,    their righteousness endures forever;    their horn will be lifted high in honor.

“Give-ability”

Mark 10:21,2221 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he

said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

The value of the gift is not the same as the amount.

The Widow’s Offering Mark 12:41-44 41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and

watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” (Charles Dickens 1812-1870)

Thank you…Thank you…

“Give but give until it hurts” (Mother Theresa 1910-1997)

Confrontational giving

Those who are materially poor can be very wonderful people. One evening we went out and we picked up four people from the street. And one of them was in a most terrible condition. I told the Sisters: "You take care of the other three; I will take care of the one who looks worse." So I did for her all that my love can do. I put her in bed, and there was such a beautiful smile on her face.

She took hold of my hand, as she said one word only: "thank you" - and she died.
