These days most athletes know that having a strength and conditioning program is an essential component to being able to play at a high level. The higher up you get in sports whether it’s select, college, or pro, a good solid program is vital to an athlete’s success. For most of us, this is no secret but, today I want to talk about something that is equally important as the actual workouts themselves. I am talking about your post workout meal. Most athletes understand that to get the most benefit from their training programs, a proper nutritional plan is essential. The meal after a workout is the most critical. After a workout, the body is drained of its essential proteins, carbs (glycogen store), vitamins, and minerals. The post workout meal is what replaces all of these things. Here is a brief example of a very standard and easy post workout meal:
Protein shake: Something with a good balance of protein and carbs.
8oz of lean grilled chicken
Green leafy vegetable (broccoli, spinach, asparagus)
Dark fruits (black berries, blue berries, strawberries)
Water, water, water
The next thing that is equally as important is the timing of this post workout meal. For best results, the post workout meal should be consumed within the first 20 minutes of the conclusion exercise. The body has a small time window where it needs to be replenished. If food is not consumed within 30-45 minutes after exercise, the body begins to eat away at itself. By this I mean your body will begin to actually take nutrients away from your muscles. Vital nutrients that muscles need in order to recover from the workout you just put them through. So my message today is very simple. Workout hard and make sure you have a post workout recovery meal planned out and ready to eat as soon as you are done. For more information about post workout nutrition or any other questions about fitness, please contact a Crull Fitness team member. For more information contact us [email protected] ■

Dallas Stars Li+le Rookies Program Designed by Mike Modano
Dallas Stars Owner and Governor Tom Gaglardi has announced the crea8on of Dallas Stars Li;le Rookies, a free four-‐week program for 30 minutes on Saturdays that provide children the opportunity to learn the basics of hockey by providing all necessary equipment.
“We are con8nually commi;ed to grow the sport of hockey in North Texas and across the en8re Lone Star State,” Gaglardi said. “Li;le Rookies provides the chance for children to learn about hockey and actually experience the sport with full gear on the ice without any financial burden.”
Li;le Rookies was designed with the assistance of hockey icon and Dallas sports legend Mike Modano. The greatest American-‐born scorer in the history of the Na8onal Hockey League, Modano helped create Li;le Rookies, which is scheduled to begin at select area ice rinks on Saturday, Sept. 28.
“Mike’s passion and support for youth hockey is one of the biggest reasons for the growth of the sport in Texas,” Gaglardi said. “He is a perfect fit to serve as the spokesman for Li;le Rookies and will be ac8ve in helping direct and grow the program over the next few years.”
The program is an innova8on of the Dallas Stars Founda8on, which focuses its efforts on providing support to the children of the North Texas community. The Li;le Rookies program encourages teamwork, physical fitness and educa8on through the sport of ice hockey as demonstrated by trained instructors at ice facili8es across the Metroplex.
Children between the ages of four and eight who have never par8cipated in a ska8ng or hockey program are eligible for Li;le Rookies, which will be offered five 8mes a year at select local area ice rinks. Par8cipa8ng rinks include: Polar Ice House, Allen Community Rink, Ice at the Parks and Dr Pepper StarCenters in Plano, McKinney, Euless, Frisco and Farmers Branch.
For more informa8on or to register for the free four-‐week program, go to DallasStars.com/Li;leRookies. Spots in the program and exact 8mes for each session will depend on rink loca8on and availability. Parents can also like the Li;le Rookies Facebook page at facebook.com/dallasstarsli;lerookies to stay up to date with rink news and share pictures of their own li;le rookies.

Kennewick, WA – Tri-City Americans Governor/General Manager Bob Tory announced today that the team has signed 16-year-old prospect Brendan O’Reilly to a standard WHL Players Contract. O’Reilly, a 6’2 180-pound defenseman from Southlake, Texas, spent last season with the Victory Honda U-16 of the Tier 1 Elite League. In 47 total games last year, O’Reilly collected 4 goals, 20 points and 25 penalty minutes. An unlisted camp invite this year, O’Reilly, who was part of a team-record 14 U.S. prospects to attend this year’s main camp, becomes the third U.S. player to join Tri-City since last Friday, following the team’s acquisition of Kennewick-native Taylor Vickerman in a trade with Vancouver and signed Arizona-prospect Austyn Playfair on Monday. “Brendan came into camp and impressed us with his skating and poise,” explained Tory. “We are happy that Brendan and his family have chosen the WHL and our hockey club to pursue his professional goals and aspirations.” ■
