    The year 2010 marks a signicant moment to reect on the international economic system

    and the roles and responsibilities of the public sector, private sector, and civil society in inter-national economics. Ten years since the turn of a new millennium, twenty years since the fallof the Soviet Communist Bloc and eighty years since the beginning of the Great Depression,the ICD will hold The Berlin International Economic Congress: An Interdisciplinary Analysisof the Roles of Global Politics & Civil Society in International Economics.

    The global nancial crisis of the last three years combined with increasing economic integration andinterdependence between nation states have highlighted the extensive inuence of the internationaleconomy on a diverse range of sectors. Indeed, foreign policy, environmental issues, employment levels,tourism, business development and business practices are all dependent on the state of the interna-tional economy.

    In seeking to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by international economic relations,we must therefore take an approach that encompasses perspectives not only from the eld of econom-ics, but also from international politics, civil society and the private sector, as well as academic researchand theories from political science, social science, and development studies.

    The Berlin International Economic Congress (BIEC) will provide a forum for leading gures from acrossthe world in economics, politics, civil society, and academia to discuss different perspectives on the re-cent nancial crisis and the international economy in general, and will produce policy recommendationsthat take into account the diverse range of actors and stakeholders in the eld.

    In particular, the Berlin International Economic Congress will pursue the following specic aims:

    Explore the relationship between economic interdependence (Economic Bridges) and globalpeace and stability

    Assess the benefits and challenges of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and socially responsibleinvestment (SRI) in international relations

    Evaluate perspectives from economists, business leaders, civil society practitioners, and academicson the global financial crisis and the future of the international economy

    Produce clear policy recommendations to decision makers based on inter-disciplinary approachesand perspectives

    Explore the role of Cultural Diplomacy and Soft Power policies in strengthening multilateral coop-eration in the global economy

    SpeakersThe speakers during the program will consist of renowned gures from international politics includingformer Heads of State, former Ministers, and other European Ministers, high-prole representatives fromthe private and public sectors, renowned stakeholders from civil society, and worlds leading academicsfrom the elds of economics, political science and the social sciences.

    ParticipantsThe BIEC participants will include academic scholars, political and diplomatic representatives, civil societypractitioners, journalists, and individuals from the private sector from across the world.

    Sustainable NetworkParticipants of the Congress will become part of a growing international network of people from acrossthe world with different elds of interest and levels of experience who share a commitment to intercul -

    tural exchange. Participants will be able to remain in touch with each other through the ICD Network.

    Certicate of AttendanceThe participants of the Congress will be awarded an ofcial certicate of attendance at the end of theprogram. This certicate will conrm attendance and provide details of the speakers who took part duringthe week and the topics discussed.

    Corporate Social Responsibility and Socially Responsible Investment(Focus: Multinational Corporations in Africa, Latin America and Asia, the Triple Bottom Line)

    Traditional Industries in the Information Age(Focus: Real estate, Tourism, Car and Aircraft Industries, and Agriculture)

    New Green Technologies and the Environment(Focus: International Agreements and the Impact on the Environment)

    The New Economic World Order & International Relations(Focus: Russia, China, India, Brazil, South Africa, and Indonesia)

    Ethics in Aid and Trade: Incentives and Impacts(Focus: Ethical Trading Initiatives, Fair-trade, Ethical Consumerism)
