“Fire Protection Association Australia

recommends installing a photoelectricsmoke alarm in each bedroom, incorridors and hallways that lead to

exits and the living area. Chubb strongly

recommends that both ionisation and

photoelectric smoke alarms be installed tohelp ensure maximum detection of the

various types of fires that occur within thehome. For greater protection also install

Quell Fire Extinguishers and Quell FireBlankets.”

Good Morning Roger,

This message is further to WTHR’s ‘Council to Consider Change to Smoke Detector Law’ news item with Bob Segall’s Aquarium 2007 Test vindicating all the work you and WTHR have done in educating fire fighters about ionization alarmsand the safe photoelectric alternatives. Councillor Christine Scales is correct when she said, “I want to go one stepfurther . . . the photoelectric I believe will give people more chance more time to leave their home safely.”

This begs the question, (and I know you know the answer!), “Are Ionization Smoke Alarms Defective?”

I recently purchased a Quell Q946 ionization smoke alarm (see below). The Quell, Chubb & Kidde brands are owned byUnited Technologies Corporation (UTC). A Q946 alarm is installed in my local member of Parliament’s home, Mr ChrisGulaptis. He requested the smoke obscuration level his alarm activates under Australian Standards smoke alarm testing

from UTC's Australian President. After four Open Letters to UTC, in his speech in the Australian Parliament (20 June,2013) Mr Gulaptis asked the question, “Are Ionization Smoke Alarms Defective?”  Open Letters to UTC’s U.S. & Australian Presidents are here: www.SmokeAlarmWarning.org/theopenletters.html

As at the date of this email, UTC’s US President, Mr Chênevert has failed to respond. Mr Gulaptis asked Mr Chênevert toanswer the same simple request he had asked his Australasian President, Mr Mark Brisson. i.e. "What level of visiblesmoke did my ionization smoke alarm activate under Australian Standards testing?" Please note thedisclaimer written on the UTC/Quell Q946 smoke alarm packaging below.

The Ohio Fire Chief’s Association’s official position to recommend photoelectric smoke alarms (November, 2013) concurswith positions taken by Cincinnati City Council, OFCA, the IAFF, AFAC, several US States and numerous Californian andOhioan municipalities who now all recommend photoelectric smoke alarms.

Sincerely,

Adrian Butler The World Fire Safety FoundationChairman, Co-Founder, Former Fire Fighter
