President’s Message. - by Bob & Sally Nolen

The calendar year is off and running and so is our next convention in San Diego, California. We are on a parallel track with last year’s registrations numbers. Remember, last year we had 531 attendees. We would love to see that record broken in San Diego.

We have worked very hard over the past several months to resolve the issues our voting program encountered last year in order to generate accurate voting results. The program has been tested and retested, and appears to be working as designed. We should begin voting on or around April 1, 2017. More will be forthcoming on this topic soon through our bulk email system. So watch for an email from ICBDA. Remember, you must be registered with the Registration Chairs, Roy and Janet Williams, to be able to vote. If you are not registered, do so soon.

Hall of Fame voting ended February 1st. We hope you took the opportunity to vote. This is an important award for our organization.

ICBDA will hold its Annual General Membership Meeting on Sunday, July 9, beginning around 1-2:30 PM (exact schedule won’t be known until the next newsletter). This is a time for you, as a member, to ask the Board of Directors questions, or comment on what is going on, or not going on.

We will again have our wood flooring this year at the convention. We have our 15,000 square feet, and Bob Bahrs brings another 14,000 square feet, for a total of 29,000 square feet of floating wood flooring.

Bob & Sally Nolen

Marketing and AdvertisingWe have more flyers for distribution if you need them. Send us an email and we will mail them to you.

We have three other folks who are helping us this year with Marketing and Advertising. Thank you to Dan & Sandi Finch and Roger Riffenburgh. Anyone else who would be willing to help, please let us know.

We have begun advertising the ICBDA Facebook page. Our Page has reached over 2,500 people at a cost of about $5 a day. We normally reach about 500 people without any advertising. We have received a lot of “likes” from people in the dance world.

We really need your ideas on improving our marketing of choreographed ballroom dancing/round dancing, to ensure its survival. Weekends are closing due to declining numbers of dancers combined with increasing cost of facilities (we closed one in September that was over 60 years old). Our activity is also not replacing teachers, who are retiring or passing on, at a sufficient rate to keep the momentum we used to have. We are working with Roundalab to determine what we can do together to help engage and prepare new teachers. This effort needs to grow.

Bob & Sally Nolen

THE ICBDA ANNUAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING WILL BE HELD AT THE CONVENTION IN SAN DIEGO ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON, JULY 9, 2017!

Time to be announced.... Be sure to attend!

DON’T FORGET TO

VOTE!for your favorite dances!

Mark your calendars now for Convention #41 in San Diego, CA to be held at our highly anticipated new venue - the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center. The dates to plug in are Thursday thru Sunday July 6-9, 2017. We will have 3 great ballrooms under 1 roof with our wood flooring laid over carpet and all within a short walk of each other.

The Resort is located on 40 lushly landscaped acres in the heart of San Diego – Mission Valley, only 7 miles from the San Diego International Airport, as well as 10 minutes from attractions such as their world class Zoo, Sea World, and a sparkling beach.

Once you get there, there is no need for a car. There are several restaurants within walking distance on property, as well as the open air Fashion Valley Mall with over 200 places to dine and shop. Want more? Jump on the light-rail trolley that stops right at the Town & Country’s backyard and head to more dining and shopping options, or visit one of the top tourist attractions at the downtown waterfront of Seaport Village.

To top it off, with 80 million dollars in renovations already started, everyone will have a newly remodeled room, at $129/night + tax, which is currently 13.1%, making our stay not only very comfortable, but affordable. This rate will be extended

5 nights prior and 4 nights after our Convention dates. Room layouts vary on a first come first served basis and all of them will include refrigerators. Also, each room includes daily bottled water, in-room coffee, newspaper, and free Internet. They even have garden rooms, located on the ground floor, that are pet friendly. The charge is only $50 for the length of stay for up to 2 pets with a combined weight of 70 lbs. As of this writing, there are no refrigerators in these rooms, and if you wanted one, it would cost another $20 for the length of your stay.

If you feel you absolutely need a car, parking is $5/day for hotel guests, $12/day for non-guests, & RV’s are $20/day. However, there are no hook-ups & dry camping is not allowed. The success of this Convention is relying heavily on everyone staying at the Convention Hotel, and we think you will be glad you did. Registration for locals or those that have timeshare or special accommodations other than Town & Country is $455/couple to help defray cost, while all those staying at the Hotel will pay $205/couple.

With over 300 sunny days year round, San Diego offers some of the best weather in the world. We hope the gorgeous mild climate, combined with a beautifully renovated Resort and indoor air-conditioned dancing in 3 ballrooms, is the perfect mix for your Convention or an extended dream vacation. Looking forward to seeing you all there in 2017!

The registration numbers for ICBDA’s 41st Convention are looking quite good at this point, but if you are not counted in them yet, they are definitely not good enough. Now that you’ve read all about the beautiful venue, and the excellent program being developed by the Convention Committee, please fill out the form and send us your registration. Better yet, go to the ICBDA website and register online – we’ll get it even faster.

The contest between Japan and California to see who can claim the largest contingent continues apace. Right after Kenji & Nobuko Shibata sent us the list of the 14 couples in their traveling group, we had 22 registrations from both, and Japan even had a slight edge in total dancers (44 to 41). But California has now retaken the lead with 51 dancers. Texas is still next with 26 people. Arizona has moved up into fourth place with 10, and four states (two on the west coast and two on the east coast) are tied with 8 each.As of January 31, we had 218 individuals registered in all -- 44 from Japan and 174 from 24 U.S. states. No other countries are represented so far – how about it, Canada?

If you haven’t registered yet, we look forward to hearing from you. If you have registered, please encourage your fellow dancers to come with you to San Diego.Feel free to call or e-mail us with questions, but please remember we are three hours later here in Massachusetts than in California!

The Race Continues!

Teaching Program at the 41st Convention by Carol Goss, Daytime Program ChairICBDA is very pleased and appreciative of the wonderful teachers who have signed up and will be giving their time, for free, to the ICBDA members in attendance. So far teachers and stand-by teachers are Paula and Warwick Armstrong, Bill Bingham and Peggy Roller, MaryAnn Callahan and Craig Cowan, Chris and Rose Cantrell, Jim and Bobbie Childers, Ken and Sue Davis, Rey and Sherry Garza, Ed and Karen Gloodt, Peter and Chama Gomez, Bill and Carol Goss, David Goss and Ulla Figwer, Steve and Lori Harris, John and Karen Herr, Joe and Pat Hilton, George and Pam Hurd, Takao and Setsuko Ito, Pamela and Jeff Johnson, Randy Lewis and Debbie Olson, Bob and Sally Nolen, JL and Linda Pelton, Randy and Marie Preskitt, Mark and Pam Prow, Paul and Linda Robinson, Kenji and Nobuko Shibata, Debbie and Paul Taylor, Mary and Bob Townsend-Manning, Curt and Tammy Worlock. All of the instructors are extremely talented and their goal

is always to share their knowledge with the dancers and give the dancers the best material possible. Enjoy, learn, and try their routines and techniques. ICBDA has always been the place to learn the new along with the tried and true. You might learn something very different, but remember, dancing is an art form and it is always evolving. Our movement has evolved because of our teachers learning new rhythms and techniques and sharing them with all of the dancers at ICBDA. Please join us for a great learning experience!

Book 41, Quarterly #3, March, April, May 2017 Page 9

[If you’ve never heard this piece of music, go to YouTube and search for the Louis Prima recording of Wonderland by Night. Listen to it before you read this. This music is in 12/8 time, four strong beats to a measure, each subdivided into three sub-beats.] “Wow!” (Moss calls it a “Bong!) Wait through the Wow! (we’re going to dance to this?) Move with the trumpet one measure. Fwd, run 2, face partner. (We’re going to dance to this!) Hold. Wow! With the trumpet, corte, recover. One measure. Hold. Wow! Move with the trumpet. One measure.End the intro in semi with the lead foot free. Step, brush the inside foot, run two, maneuver ( 1-- 4 –- 7- 9 10-- ) Pivot 4: ( 1—4—7—10--…) This dance is all about this particular piece of music.Gordon Moss thought the most important part of writing a dance was selecting the music. Then the choreographer should listen, listen to the music over and over, listen more. “He is remembered for listening to a piece of music for as much as a year to understand all of its nuances before attempting to write a step to it.” (Sandi Finch, ICBDA Newsletter Sept Oct Nov 2016) And Gordon Moss also required the dancer to listen to the music. As he writes in the Tag (trumpet coda) – his capitals and underlining -: “(23) End by holding corte as MUSIC PAUSES – learn to gauge exact length of this pause. (24) 8 –quick-Cts do 7-… -…Anticipate…and FREEZE as music pauses again……” His cue sheets are dense with directions.Wonderland by Night, in the Bert Kaempfert version, hit the top of the charts in 1961. The Louis Prima version was popular then too. It’s edgier than the other, a little more rubato, a little more personal. The rhythm, unique for a round dance, is 12/8. To 6/8, choreographers have written, for example, Slow Two Step (Can’t Help Falling in Love, Rumble) and more recently, Hesitation Canter Waltz (Hallelujah, Read). There’s no other 12/8 that we know of. Gordon Moss writes: “Meas-4 rhythm exactly like 4- meas of very fast Viennese-Wz-Canter. It can even be counted in fast “3’s” as (Step,-Canter; Step,-,-;) (Step,-,Canter; Step,-,-;). This is an oddity of the music. All Quick Steps in the dance have this “Canter-Feel” (end of quote). The quicks have a limping quality. The steps follow the rhythm so exactly that once learned, one’s feet remember when to step. Sandi Finch (ICBDA Newsletter, above) says this dance was written in 1964. The cue sheet is undated. When we learned it in 1974 from Len and Winnie Taylor in Springfield, Massachusetts, it was already a classic. In 1964, and even in 1974, round dancing was a world of waltz, without international ballroom figures, and a wide range of two steps, from easy to quite advanced. There was an occasional one step, Folsom Prison Blues as a token cha, and two steps written to rumba music. But this rhythm was unique, and still is. It’s not a two step as we now think of two steps. Hesitation canter one step? As Joyce Brenton says, it took a master choreographer to create this dance. When we learned this dance in 1974, our advanced club still used cues only for learning. Once learned, the dance was danced

without cues. Advanced choreography was different then. To remember a dance with only the music as a guide, a dance must be memorable, and Gordon Moss’s are memorable. Fortunately, sequences repeat. The first time through can be “do we remember this?” Once successfully through once, you can relax and really enjoy the second repeat. Boo Hoo (QS by the Stones) goes through 3 times in 2 ½ minutes; you have three chances to get everything right! As international ballroom entered round dancing in the next few years, advanced dances became a lot less memorable, and there were many more of them. Quickly clubs shifted to all dances cued.Part One, in closed and semi, man and woman on opposite feet, is quite doable once the rhythm is understood. For us, in 1974, Part Two was entirely new choreography. Man and woman side by side in tight skaters, both with the left foot free. Flare to a cross check & recover, woman rolls across to Man’s Skaters, front limp with special timing. Repeat with man rolling across and again with woman rolling across. Repeat with man, but woman now turns to shadow for the most difficult section of the dance.

Man and woman alternately rolling across is now familiar from dances like I’ve Got You Under My Skin (Goss) and I am Just a Girl (Worlock), but Moss’s dance rolls to tight shadow, not arms length as in the newer versions. Easier, actually. But Part Three starts with a right face turn from Skaters to Left-Skaters with a left face twirl for the woman, 2 measures, then the same turn left face back to Skaters with a right face twirl -- the mirror turn with mirror twirl. Two more measures. Today’s choreographers no longer use mirror as an organizing technique. These shadow turns, especially the mirror ones, are the most difficult part of the dance. Then comes strolling vine in Skaters, a bit unusual for most dancers. It would be difficult to teach Part Three to today’s dancers unless they were enthusiastic about learning it Strolling vine

in shadow and mirror symmetry have little background in current choreography. But the music is so exciting, and the limping rhythm fits the music so well, that this is a real loss from our Hall of Fame repertoire. The Nolens shared their memories of teaching Wonderland by Night:

“Sally and I were asked to teach Wonderland by Night at the 1981, 5th URDC Convention in Grand Rapids, MI. However, before I go any further on that story, Sally and I were taking a teach on Till in 1980 at the 3rd URDC Convention in Kansas City, MO. Gordon and Betty Moss walked into the room, which really shook up the couple teaching the dance (Gordon said the teachers were not teaching it to his satisfaction), so Gordon walked up to Bob and said, ‘Here, you take Betty and I will dance with your wife.’ So, we spent that time

Wonderland by Night” continuedlearning Till from Gordon and Betty Moss! Now, back to being asked to teach Wonderland by Night after the experience with Gordon and Betty Moss at URDC. Sally went to our super instructors Betsy and Bud Potts to say, ‘You must make sure we know everything about this dance and do it perfectly. I do not want to risk Gordon and Betty Moss walking in on us.’ (What Sally said to me was, ‘If they walk in on us and we make a mistake, I’ll just die right there!’) The teach was a success and we remember the entire room was jam packed. It is still to this day a wonderful dance.”

At this time, 1981, both the Potts’ and the Nolens cued the dance. Bob adds, “Gordon was a wonderful choreographer, the likes of which we have never again seen. How blessed we were to have this time with them when their dances were on the top list of favorites.”

ICBDA Consignment ShopIt’s time to sort through your dance wear. We will have a consignment shop in San Diego in the same way we had one in Reno & Greensboro. Purchases will be on the honor system, with neither hotel nor any ICBDA member responsible for any missing items. We intend to see that the room is locked overnight. ICBDA will get 10% of the proceeds, with 90% going to the seller.

Ö There will be envelopes for buyers to put in their money and to list to whom it should go.

Ö Sellers are required to label all items with their name and price in whole dollars.

Ö More information will be available in the next newsletter and at the site in San Diego.

Venue Quest Want to have an ICBDA convention closer to where you live? You can help make this possible. Let me know if there are hotels in your area that we might be able to use. The specifics are on the ICBDA website, but here they are to save you the search: The specifications required are three dance halls, one with room to house 15,000 square feet of wooden flooring and room for 550 seating on the side, and the other two both large enough to house from 7000 square feet up to 10,000 square feet of wooden flooring with room for 150 to 200 seating. ICBDA has its own wooden dance flooring (so carpeting is preferred as it makes the floors more stable. Additionally, these halls need to be within walking distance of hotels and we need eating facilities nearby. The location should also be close to a major airport. All this adds up to a super convention site.

Website Newsby JL PeltonMember Communication by EmailOn January 1, 2017, I sent a test email message to all members and partners to verify that you are receiving messages from ICBDA. At this time, only a little over half of the emails (611 out of 1189) have been opened. If you did not receive the email, please contact the webmaster to get the problem resolved. If you have indicated in the past that you would like to be removed from an email list of ICBDA, then you have been removed from all emails, not just the one you were viewing at the time. Unfortunately, the email program does not allow selective removal from different lists. You are removed from all lists. If you have asked to be removed but would like to be added back in again, contact me and I will put you back on the email list.Does your partner/spouse have an email address so they can get the emails directly from ICBDA? If they have their own email address, then you don’t have to remember to tell them or to forward emails. If you let me know the address, I can add them to the partner email database.

Voting Program UpdatesWe have been working diligently on the voting program for 2017. We have made changes which include the ability to update your selections up to the last day of voting. You will also be able to see what you voted for instantly with a

HTML page response. Upon returning to the voting program, the selections you made are automatically displayed so you will not have to re-enter any of your previous selections to make additions or deletions. To remove a dance from your selection list, remove the check in the box by that dance. The voting list will be much smaller this year. It will still be ordered by Phase (3-6), then Rhythm (A-Z) and is alphabetized within each section. You can easily scroll thru the phases in which you do not want to make selections using the scroll bar on the right side of your browser or by using the page down button on your keyboard.

Member ProfilesHave you checked your member profile lately? Has something changed -- New mailing address, email address, new partner? You can update your mailing address, email address, add a partner’s email address, add or change an alternate mailing address, and upload or change your member picture.
