ICAR-National Research Centre for Integrated Pest Management
Survey Report for whitefly and other pests in cotton in Punjab
(18-19 August 2017)
Survey for whitefly and other important pests was conducted during Aug 18-19, 2017 by ICAR-NCIPM Cotton
Team (RK TANWAR, ANOOP KUMAR & SP SINGH) in four districts (Fazilka, Muktsar, Bathinda and
Mansa) of Punjab. Cotton plants, in general, are bearing 15-45 bolls in different fields and boll opening (lower
10-15 boll) has also been observed in a few fields. Population of whitefly was recorded (2-6 adults/ leaf) below
economic threshold level (ETL) at most of the surveyed locations except a few fields in Chudiwala dhana (12
adults/leaf) in Fazilka district and Maur (8 adults/leaf) and Ghuman kalan (40 adults /leaf) in Mansa district.
Jassid and thrips damage symptoms were also recorded on lower leaves at many locations. Cotton Leaf Curl
Disease (CLCuD) of 1-3 grade was observed in many the fields in all the districts. Farmers have undertaken 4-9
application of insecticides (tank mixing of 2 or 3 chemicals mainly thiamethoxam + acephate, diafenthiuron
+ethion, flonicamid, imidacloprid+ thiamethoxam +triazophos, triazophos+fipronil, pyriproxifen+ethion, etc.).
Table: Status of whitefly, natural enemies and other pests in cotton crop at different surveyed locations.

Advisory: Farmers were advised:
To avoid tank mixing of chemical insecticides
Avoid repetition of the same chemical pesticides in the same season
Avoid the application of synthetic pyrthroids or OP compounds
Need based application of safer insecticides like diafenthiuron, flonicamid, spiromesifen, pyriproxifen
Application of urea 2%+MgSo4 1%+ Zinc sulphate 0.5%+ boron 0.2 % twice at 15 days followed by
